MULTI REVIEW: LAPHROAIG 10YO, QUARTER CASK, TRIPLE WOODSEE MORE ONSOMERSETWHISKY.COM
REVIEW: THE MACALLAN 1824 SERIES (GOLD, AMBER, SIENNASEE MORE ONSOMERSETWHISKY.COM
HEAD TO HEAD REVIEW: GLENLIVET FOUNDER’S RESERVE VS Finish: The finish is sweet, and fairly short, shorter than the 12yo. Thoughts: It’s certainly younger in taste profile, that’s not necessarily bad, it makes it sweeter and less spicy from the wood interaction. It’s a nice dram, although the “premium quality” nature is more in the marketing than the bottle, it’s a good dramthat
MULTI REVIEW: OCTOMORE 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 & OBA Octomore 8.2. Info: 8yo. 58.4% abv. PPM 167. Global Travel Retail Exclusive. First 6 years in one of either French Mourvedre, Austrian sweet wines or French Sauternes, then all 3 further matured for 2 years in fresh Amarone casks. Colour: Dark and rusty with red and pink tints. Nose: Rich fruity and buttery notes with a smoky fire. REVIEW: THE DUPPY SHARE CARIBBEAN RUM This legend is where the stylish Duppy Share Caribbean Rum takes its name. It’s made from a blend of bourbon-barrel-matured 5 year old rum from Barbados and 3 year old rum from Jamaica. A bright, bold and altogether very handsome rum. (Thanks to Master of Malt for that precis). I enjoy a good rum from time to time, but I’m very new tothem
NEWS AND REVIEW: GLENFIDDICH The whisky is said to be “sweet and spicy, with a complex flavour that evolves in the glass”. Glenfiddich Vintage Cask is matured in European oak and American bourbon casks to impart a smoky, peaty taste. It is inspired by the first Glenfiddich spirit in 1887, when barley was traditionally malted in kilns at the distillery overfurnaces
REVIEW: THE NAKED GROUSE The rest of the PR reads as follows with my notes and thoughts after. The Naked Grouse is a unique and expertly crafted, small batch blended Scotch whisky containing hand-blended world-renowned malts that combine to produce a sweet, rich and smooth taste. The exceptional blend was inspired by William Gloag of The Famous Grouse family andhis
MULTI REVIEW: TASTING THE FABULOUS ABERLOUR RANGE Aberlour A’bunadh (Batch 45) – 60.2%. Colour: Deep golden with yellows and reds playing. Nose: A “full strength” nose, full of Oloroso sherry notes, that’s figs and sweet raisins, toffee and light alcohol zing from the high ABV, totally different to the 16 and a distant lost cousin to the 12. SWB | SOMERSET WHISKY BLOG | REVIEWS AND OPINIONS WITH A Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms & Islay Editions. Cairngorms Edition. Info: Bottled in partnership with the Cairngorms Trust, to support environmental and community projects in the Cairngorms National Park. 46% ABV, 11 years old, 263 bottles, single cask. REVIEW: BRUICHLADDICH THE TERNARY PROJECT Thoughts: In some ways it reminds me of “Peat”, and old Bruichladdich bottling which was a favourite of mine obviously this one is a lot posher (and more expensive). It’s a lovely blend of the various Bruichladdich styles which works well for me! Thanks to Bruichladdich for the sample. Review: Bruichladdich's 10 Year OldSecond

FOR SALE | SWB | SOMERSET WHISKY BLOG For Sale. Keep an eye out on this page for any whisky bottles I might be selling, and send me an offer for them if you’re after one! 🙂. REVIEW & COMPARISON: TALISKER STORM VS TALISKER 10YO Comparison. Storm is just slightly lighter in colour I think. Also a little lighter in nose; even at the same abv as the 10yo it noses more smoothly with more peat tones apparent rather than the smokey notes of the 10yo. Storm seemed to show a few more woody notes and a slightly longer and less fruity finish over the 10yo. REVIEW: BRUICHLADDICH ISLAY BARLEY 2012 Unpeated, matured in a combination of first-fill American oak barrels and French wine casks. 8 years old, 50% abv. Around £55 (via Bruichladdich’s website). Colour: Light summery barley tones in the sun. Nose: Slightly spirit lead, but sweet and moreish. Earthy (but not peaty) barley notes with hints of creamy vanilla and nuts. REVIEW: JURA TIME & TIDE: TWO 21 YEAR OLDS Price: £150. Overall Thoughts: I’ve long been a fan of older Juras, it seems to me to be a whisky that gets much better with age and shines once over 20. These 21’s are no exception to that rule, they’re tasty, oily, and well presented drams. ‘Tide’ is the more oily of the two, but ‘Time’ with its peaty influence has more REVIEW: HIGHLAND PARK DARK ORIGINS (VS 12YO) Highland Park 12 Year Old (40%) vs. Dark Origins (46.8%) The 12yo is lighter in colour, an early summers day vs. a rich early autumn evening. The 12yo is quite malty and a little nutty on the nose, the Origins is slightly more caramelly and sweet from the sherry which has dialled the malt back a small notch. The 12yo is very easy on thepalate
REVIEW: DEWAR’S 25 YEAR OLD Info: Dewar’s 25 Year Old is a blend of malt and grain whiskies that are 25yo or older that have then been married and then further aged in freshly emptied Royal Brackla casks. Available in Global Travel Retail (i.e airport duty-free) before eventually being available everywhere. Colour: Golden and bright. Hints of rust. REVIEW: ROBERT BURNS SINGLE MALT (ARRAN WHISKY) This is an official Arran Single Malt which has been endorsed by The World Robert Burns Federation. Made from approx 70% Bourbon Casks and 30% Sherry Casks, this light aromatic Single Malt is ideal for drinking, prior to or during a meal. Very fresh with no artificial colouring, this beautifully packaged malt is made for easy drinking. REVIEW: GLENGOYNE 25 YEAR OLD (VS 21 YEAR OLD) Here’s the PR blurb: “The Glengoyne 25YO is an extremely special malt. Matured in our traditional dunnage warehouses for 25 years in the finest European oak sherry casks, unchill-filtered and bottled as taste insists at 48%ABV, the result is a flavour of soft oak, cinnamon, stewed fruits and a Seville marmalade tang. A perfect afterdinner
SWB | SOMERSET WHISKY BLOG | REVIEWS AND OPINIONS WITH A The Ternary Project. Info: A mix of roughly 3rds (30%, 40%, 30%) of Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore. It’s a NAS, but dates (and I’m giving vaguely informed guesses here) are roughly 28+yo, ~20yo and ~13yo respectively. 4000 bottles, ballot only (closed).275. 52.1% ABV.

Arran 17 Year Old is the last release in a trilogy counting down to the launch of the 18 year old in 2015. The oldest official bottling from the distillery at the time of release. It’s made from un-peated malted barley and matured in the finest ex-sherry casks giving it a unique and distinctive flavour.

NEWS AND REVIEW: GLENFIDDICH The whisky is said to be “sweet and spicy, with a complex flavour that evolves in the glass”. Glenfiddich Vintage Cask is matured in European oak and American bourbon casks to impart a smoky, peaty taste. These 21’s are no exception to that rule, they’re tasty, oily, and well presented drams. ‘Tide’ is the more oily of the two, but ‘Time’ with its peaty influence has more REVIEW: THE NAKED GROUSE The rest of the PR reads as follows with my notes and thoughts after. The Naked Grouse is a unique and expertly crafted, small batch blended Scotch whisky containing hand-blended world-renowned malts that combine to produce a sweet, rich and smooth taste. The exceptional blend was inspired by William Gloag of The Famous Grouse family andhis
DISTILLERY VISITS
Maturation currently in Liverpool until warehousing is built. Somerset Cider Brandy (06/08/2014) – Lovely little distillery in the heart of Somerset using Coffey continuous stills from France. Maturation on site and in nearby village. Read my blog post on my visit to the site, which is an enchanting place.
NEWS & REVIEW: THE ARDMORE LEGACY (VS TRADITIONAL CASK The Ardmore Legacy is a perfectly good whisky, and a great starters peated malt. However it’s a backwards step to cut the ABV by 6% and charge the same, or more for it. I may well still keep a bottle of it on my shelf, once my stocks of Traditional Cask have run out (I’llbe

Colour: Dark and rusty with red and pink tints. Nose: Rich fruity and buttery notes with a smoky fire. REVIEW: HIGHLAND PARK’S WARRIOR SERIES Svein. Highland Park Svein: 40% ABV – RRP €40.00. The Warrior Series is a range of six single malt whiskies that showcase the very best of Highland Park. Offering a spectrum of flavours but grounded in Highland Park’s gently smoky but surprisingly sweet character. Svein was been created to mirror the hospitable and generous nature of many REVIEW & COMPARISON: TALISKER STORM VS TALISKER 10YO Comparison.
