Spear has cultivated the most established network of dental IMPLANT CROWNS: SCREW-RETAINED OR CEMENT In the late 1980s, screw-retained implant restorations were developed to address concerns with retrieving implant crowns if they needed to be repaired or replaced. With advancements in implant restoration techniques, such as custom abutments, cement-retained implants became more popular 2. By the early 2000s, most implant restorations were INTRINSIC DENTAL EROSION Intrinsic Dental Erosion - Causes and Diagnosis. Dental erosion is caused by sustained direct contact between tooth surfaces and acidic substances. The demineralization of dental enamel will occur once the oral environmental pH reaches the critical threshold of 5.5., when it can be inherently classified as either “extrinsic” or “intrinsic A NEW GENERATION OF ZIRCONIA Restorative materials in dentistry are constantly evolving. At this year’s Chicago Midwinter Meeting, Ivoclar-Vivadent launched a new generation of zirconia called IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime, which uses a new gradient manufacturing technology.. It combines 3Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP powders, for a product which offers a seamless progression of shade and translucency in one disc, eliminating the visible A SIMPLIFIED PROCESS FOR BONDING E.MAX Follow these simple steps to achieve an optimal bond to your e.max or other glass ceramic restorations. Try the restoration on the tooth to confirm the marginal integrity, interproximal contacts and esthetic appearance. Rinse for 10 seconds with a water-air spray oil-free of course. Better yet, steam clean the restoration. 3 TECHNIQUES TO REMOVE BROKEN ABUTMENT SCREWS A typical fracture of an abutment screw is of the head, away from the shank or body. Certainly, removal of the remaining fragment is critical to future use of the implant fixture. When evaluating implant-supported fixed-bridge restorations over a five-year period, Kreissl, et al., found the incidence of abutment screw fracture to be 3.9 percent with screw loosening reported at 6.7 percent. 1 7 STEPS TO USING RETRACTION CORD WHEN MAKING AN IMPRESSION Leave the cords in place three to five minutes. Right before making the impression, the cord should be wetted with water so it won’t grab and tear the tissues when it is removed, creating more bleeding. Once the cord is removed, the retraction is maintained for 30 seconds. Be prepared to begin immediate syringing of your impression material. UNDERSTANDING THE BOLTON RATIO The Bolton ratio for anterior teeth is the one that is more often used. Calculating the ratio is simple; measure the M-D widths of all the anterior teeth (Figure 5), and calculate the percentage of lower relative to upper (Figure 6). If the ratio is 77.2 +/- 1.65, then it is possible to fulfill all the requirements mentioned earlier, (proper WHY IMPLANT RESTORATION SCREWS BECOME LOOSE The reason implant abutment screws used to come loose could be attributed to a few different factors: External hex (Branemark style) implants: The external hex on these implants provided little resistance and/or retention, so a lot of load was placed on the screw itself. Today’s implants are mainly designed with an internalconnection

HEATED COMPOSITE FOR EFFICIENT RESTORATIONS There has been recent discussion on Spear Talk concerning the use of heated composite. Many clinicians have heard of the concept, with early research on the topic dating back to the 1980s. 1 But many still have questions about why heated composite may be beneficial and how to effectively heat composite for restorations. THE PROS AND CONS OF THERMOPLASTIC PARTIAL DENTURES The only thing that changes is its physical shape; there are no actual chemical changes. Thermoplastics will differ depending on their molecular composition – some require higher temps to become moldable and some require greater injection pressures. POSSIBILITIES FOR MOUTHRINSING WITH BLEACH As mentioned before, household bleach is extremely caustic and dangerous, and needs to be properly diluted to be handled safely. Standard bleach is six percent sodium hypochlorite. The two studies I cited above were performed with 0.25-percent and 0.05-percent solutions. This means we would need to dilute it by a factor of atleast 24.
DENTAL COMPOSITES: WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND Filtek Supreme Ultra Universal is a nanocomposite containing particles of 20 nm. What’s unique about nanocomposites is that the particles group together to form nanoclusters. This allows smaller particles to come together and function as larger particles, resulting in increased strength, wear resistance and polishability. E.MAX: BOND OR CEMENT? The Spear Campus includes areas for live patient treatment, hands-on workshops and food service during our events, so we’ve always maintained a high standard of infection control (e.g. tissues, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes throughout the facility). But in addition to our exhaustive daily sanitization of facilities with peroxide-based cleaning agents, we’ve now increased the frequency of cleanings (including doorknobs, countertops, etc.) before and after campus events and started administering additional cleaning agents via electrostatic sprayers to specifically address COVID-19. Meanwhile, Spear will continue to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and take the necessary actions to ensure the safety of our employees, visitors and clients. We look forward to seeing you on campus as we remain focused on the health and well-being of the Spear community.WHAT’S NEXT?
As things develop, please check back here for updates. We will continue to monitor the situation and inform you and our community asthings develop.
