MISSIONS TO MARS
Beginning with the USSR’s Marsnik 1 in 1960, only 26 of the 56 Mars missions have been successful. This shows how difficult it is to send missions to the Red Planet. But humanity strives to overcome that challenge. The four rovers (NASA/JPL, USA) that have already gone to Mars are: Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity.Scroll down
MARS 3 - THE FIRST LANDER ON MARS Mars 3 (USSR) was a robotic space probe, the first to attain a soft landing on Mars, on December 2 1971. It failed 20 seconds after landing, having transmitted only a partial panoramic image with no details due to the dust storm. The lander carried a small walking robot called PROP-M.Scroll down
MARINER 9 - THE FIRST TO ORBIT MARS Mariner 9 (NASA/JPL, USA) was the first spacecraft to orbit Mars. Mariner 9 arrived in Martian orbit on November 14, 1971, two weeks earlier than the Soviet orbiter Mars 2 (arriving on Nov. 27, 1971). Mariner 9 mapped 85 percent of the Martian surface. The contact was lost on Oct. 27, 1972.Scroll down

LIFE ON MARS
Mars' atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide. However, methane has also been detected, which can be interpreted as a sign of biological activity or geologic activity. Mars had liquid water and a thicker atmosphere in the past. Polar caps of Mars are frozen water covered by a layer of carbondioxide ice.
The Curiosity rover discovered complex organic molecules in sedimentary rocks dating to three billion years old. If Mars possessed an Earth-like biosphere in the past, Mars may contain subsurface deposits of oil and natural gas indicating pastlife.
