Meanwhile, in Apple’s Mac marketing department: Look, you hardly need me to pile on to what’s already been said about the state of the Mac — @mjtsai is doing a bang-up job of that — but when even long-time Mac fans like @flargh say that the message is “Apple to creative pros: go f*** yourselves”, you’ve got to hope that someone with a corner office is listening. XCODE TREASURES: PLATFORM SPECIFICS The third update to the Xcode Treasures beta book went out yesterday, and this is a good one: it’s all about platform-specific features.. While the book sort of takes Swift + iOS as its default stance, I’ve used Mac examples where it makes more sense to do so, and I drop into Objective-C or C when I need to for language-specific reasons (like showing off certain debugging or profiling XCODE TREASURES: SOURCE CODE MANAGEMENT Another update to the Xcode Treasures beta has been released today. This one is all about Source Code Management.. To be honest, this could well have been called The Git Chapter, since Xcode’s protocol-agnostic source control features are dropping support for Subversion, leaving Git as the Highlander-style there-can-only-be-one winner.. And to be even more honest, this chapter more than JAVA VIDEO: PAST THE POINT OF CARING I used to care about Java video (c.f., parts I, II, and III of an ONJava blog series about it). I don’t anymore. It’s not just the shifting of my interest to the iPhone, it’s that Java’s powers that be have chosen their way, and it’s not something I think willwork.
SWIFT AND THE LAST MILE So the initial thrill of Swift is over, and lots of us are digging in. So far, there haven’t been any screaming denunciations that I’ve heard, but surely they’re coming if WE WERE ALREADY DEAD BEFORE THE CHIP EVEN SHRANK Interesting questions are floating around about what changes iOS developers need to make, given the introduction of dual-core on the iPad 2, particularly in terms of threading. WINDOWS | TIME.CODE() It’s easy enough to get hits with bad tech journalism: just rile the Apple fanboys. The Mobile Technology Weblog’s Microsoft Announces iPhone Killer deserves accolades for not involving any kind of actual announcement, nor in any way substantiating how its topic might be capable of “kill”ing the iPhone.. Android is a far more credible competitor to the iPhone, and as I said earlier, I JAVASCRIPT | TIME.CODE() Like a lot of old programmers — “when I was your age, we used teletypes, and line numbers, and couldn’t rely on the backspace key” and so on — I sometimes wonder how different it is growing up as a young computer programmer today. A PERFECTLY LAZY SOLUTION Something nifty with Swift came up the other day, not a big deal, but worth blogging before I forget it again. Basically it involves the interaction of three things: SO, HOW’S THAT MAC PRO WORKING OUT FOR YOU? It’s been a little over two months since I became that guy who actually bought a three-years-old-out-of-the-box Mac Pro. My reasoning and agony over the purchase has already been detailed on this blog, but now that I’ve used it for two months, let’s take a look back at how it’s working out.. The thing that surprises most people when they see the trashcan Mac Pro is how small it is. COMMODITIZING EMBEDDED VIDEO: THE HTML5 VIDEO TAG Surfin’ Safari notes initial support for the HTML5 and tags in their latest nightly builds.. Indeed, if you have a browser that supports the video tag, then you (hopefully) can see an autoplaying video here: There’s been a little bit of controversy over the fact that calls for inclusion of the Ogg formats have been removed in more recent versions of the spec. Section 3.14.7 APPLE SHOULD GET OUT OF THE MANGA PIRACY BUSINESS Sorry for another anime/manga-related post, but a thread on Twitter reminded me of some Apple misdeeds that need rectifying. It started with a pair of tweets, first from Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network: I’m sure this has been asked a million times, but why are there so many goddamn bootleg manga apps on the iOS store? Chris Adamson, President and "Director of Code and Media", has been developing software professionally since 1997, focusing on client-side GUI development and media-distribution technologies. He is the co-author of _iOS SDK Development_(with Bill
Dudney) and _Learning Core Audio_ (with Kevin Avila), along with the catalog titles _Swing Hacks_ (with Josh Marinacci) and _QuickTime for Java: A Developer's Notebook_.
WHAT I DO
I advise and develop solutions, with a particular focus on media technologies for MAC OS X and IOS (AV Foundation, Core Audio, Core Video, Core Image, etc.). Thanks to a wide variety of client engagements, I'm broadly experienced in most of the iOS APIs. Previous client projects include: * Motivational calendar / goal-tracking iOS app, based on best-selling self-help product line * OS X video production application to apply real-time chroma key effect, off-line crop/scale/drag and export * Bluetooth iPhone application for monitoring/controlling proprietary automatic-transmission bicycle * Digital "course-pack" iPad article reader for higher education, supporting highlighting (and import/export of highlight files) inEPUB/xhtml and PDF
* Web radio client with real-time iPod EQ effects applied, regardless of source format (MP3, AAC, Ogg, WMA, etc.) * Social "challenge" game with push notification * Effects / audio "sweetening" chain for OS X CD burning application * OS X daemons and agents for user-monitoring application, along with custom installer * Maintenance / new features in iPhone app tied to cable/satellite broadcaster's live coverage of major 2011 sporting event I've also had several of my own apps on the iOS App Store over the years. I'm also actively developing my skills for livestreaming by setting up a personal livestreaming site on AWS and developing private Roku channels with that platform's public SDK. I frequently speak at developer conferences, including CocoaConf , Voices That Matter, and MobiDevDay
. Previously, I was the Editor (for O'Reilly Media) of the industry-leading developer community java.netand of ONJava.com .
Prior to switching to the computer industry in 1997, I was a Writer / Associate Producer at CNN Headline News.See also:
