For an unflared port, you need to stay below 10 m/sec whereas adding a 35mm flare to an 86mm port lifts the acceptable speed @30hz from 7 m/sec to around 22 m/sec. Pipe mode resonance. As the port gets longer, the resonant frequency of the port decreases. Access it by selecting the EQ/Filter tab and click the Add button to get this screen. This allows you to model the effects of different filters. To control cone excursion below the port tuning frequency, it is often neccessary to employ a high pass filter.QRDUDE USER GUIDE
QRDude User Guide. In standard mode, the calculator can be used to design standard QRD diffuser panels. Used this way, it is much the same as the other calculators to be found on the net, except that it uses a more up-to-date method of calculating well widths, leading tobetter bandwidth.
PORT FLARES
Test Ports and Boxes Details. Fifteen ports were tested for a range of frequencies. (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35hz, power and excursion permitting ) The ports ranged in diameter from 51mm to 152mm, and the flares ranged from 10mm to 75mm. Several boxes were required to optimise velocity and port length for the different port diameters. SAWBOARD - SUBWOOFER BUILDER A Sawboard is a handy jig for cutting straight lines with a power saw, shown here highlighted in light yellow. Each side of the sawboard has to be wide enough to support your particular saw. When you first do your sawboard, make the base oversize and then run the saw down each edge to cut the sawboard to the correct width.USING AN SPL METER
An SPL meter will let you check that you have the phase switch at the best position. Find a passage that has some subwoofer action and check the level with the sub turned off. Now turn up the sub and check. Then change the phase switch and check for a third time. You may need to increase of decrease the volume of your sub to highlight theDAMPING TREATMENTS
Damping Treatments Treating some of the surfaces of an enclosure can minimise or eliminate standing waves. A standing wave occurs when sound energy is reflected between two walls, or a wall and the driver. If the frequency is right, the reflected sound reinforces the radiated sound, leading to a resonance. COLLO'S DIY SUBWOOFER TOOLS Collo's DIY Subwoofer Tools. CONSTRUCTION AT SUBWOOFER-BUILDER.COM Construction tips Glues and Finishes I've tried. Making a sawboard A simple jig for cutting straight lines with your power saw. Milling with a router With the right jig, you can use a router as a simple milling machine. Damping Treatments Cut down on some of those nasty peaks in your response. ROUTER AS A MILLING MACHINE The Jig. The jig needs to be wide enough top span the job when the router is moved to the far-left or far-right of the job. A strengthening rib glued to the top will prevent any sagging in the middle. Four screws are enough to hold the router in place. A single hole is all that is needed for the bit. XMAX - SUBWOOFER BUILDER Xmax is the amount by which the voice coil can move in one direction without it leaving the magnetic zone. If excursion is increased even further, the back of the voice coil former will eventually slam into the magnet, risking permanent damage to the driver. Xlim is the amount by which the voice coil can move in one direction before this hardPASSIVE RADIATORS
Passive Radiators can be used to create a subwoofer with a low tuning frequency in a small enclosure without having to use long ports. A Passive Radiator (PR) is basically a driver without the magnet or coil assembly, along with a means of attaching additional mass to adjust its resonant frequency.PORT FLARES
Port flares allow a controlled change in velocity as air exits a port. This can prevent turbulence in the boundary layer, close to the port wall, from becoming audible. As the airspeed is lifted a little further, turbulence within the straight section of the port becomes an issue. The reason a ported speaker works is because the air in theport

The journey has been driven by a thirst to explore some of the more obscure aspects of subwoofer design that are not usually covered by the current crop of available software. Through a series of experiments, some of these principles have been illuminated and are incorporated into the free software that's available on this site. Another area of great interest is the science behind the design of QRDsound diffusers.
The Technical Reference presents a step by step explanation of how these work. A detailed 'Further Reading' list sits at the end of thearticle.
The culmination of this effort is the creation of QRDude, a tool for you to design your own advanced QRD diffusers. I hope you enjoy your visit to this site. _Bill "Collo" Collison_, Aussie sub builder and code wranglerFREE SOFTWARE
