As a part of the 30x30 Transformation Series, Teach For America Greater New Orleans asked 2007 alumnus Vasy McCoy about his journey from architecture to education. HIs response unveiled the power of vulnerability and the importance of being a lifelong learner - no matter your age, background, or role. SCHOOLS MUST STOP OVER-POLICING AND PUSHING OUT BLACK Six-year-old Kaia Rolle pleads for help in the body-cam footage that police in Orlando, Florida, released in February 2020. Prior to police arrival, educators say Kaia threw a tantrum, kicking and punching three school employees in the process. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO GRADUATE AND START COLLEGE DURING A Milestone Moment: Freshman Year in College. Ada spent much of his freshman year at the University of Denver in quarantine. He quarantined before coming to campus, for two weeks after his suitemate contracted COVID-19, and for two more weeks around winter break. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED ABOUT REMOTE LEARNING? The authors set out to uncover how these schools approached remote learning by conducting research, interviews with school leaders, and focus groups with teachers and other academic staff last spring. They found that all twelve schools struggled with the transition to distance learning and lost learning is a big concern.
