In 1892 two contracts totaling $55,960 were awarded to the Craig Shipbuilding Company in Toledo for the construction of four lightships. Designated as Lightships LV59, LV60, LV61 and LV62, all four vessels were built to similar specifications. Framed and planked of white oak they measured 87' 2" inches in length, 21' 6" inches inthe beam, with

The tower was cleaned and painted in 1999, and wooden walkways have been built, also to stem erosion atop the dune on which the tower sits. A joint resolution of Congress approving the relocation was made on May 3, 1900, and with the establishment of the Simmons Reef Gas Buoy on July 19, 1900, LV55 was moved and anchored on Lansing Shoals. LV55 was one of three identical light vessels authorized in a $60,000 appropriation on March 2, 1899. Built at the Blythe Craig ShipbuildingCo

With the creation of the Lighthouse Board in 1852, a system-wide upgrading of all Lewis lamps to the superior Fresnel optics had been underway ,and as part of this upgrading, the Bois Blanc lantern was finally retrofitted with a fixed white Fourth Order Fresnel lens in 1857, with the light now visible for a distance of 14 miles in clearweather.

Fourteen Mile Point Light Station is located on private property some 14 miles east of Ontonagon. The old trail the keepers used has long since overgrown and has become impenetrable. With the creation of the Lighthouse Board in 1852, a system-wide upgrading of all Lewis lamps to the superior Fresnel optics had been underway ,and as part of this upgrading, the Bois Blanc lantern was finally retrofitted with a fixed white Fourth Order Fresnel lens in 1857, with the light now visible for a distance of 14 miles in clearweather.
