POCKET KNIFE MODEL 45 BY HEDENGRAN & SON (ESKILSTUNA, SWEDEN) - SWEDISH 1888 PATENT NO. 1442 The Hedengran family has a long history of cutlery production in the town of Eskilstuna, Sweden. Fredrik Alexander Hedengran (1810-1874) started producing pocket knives in the early 1830s (Marmér, 1999). In the early 1870s Alexander’s oldest son, Donatus Leonard Alexander Hedengran (1849-1924), joined the Hedengran company and the name was changed to Hedengran & Son. In the year 1900 the Hedengran & Son company was reconstructed and changed name to Törnblom & Hedengrans Fabriksaktiebolag - with Per Alfred Lundblad and Gustaf Hedengran as owners. Due to economic difficulties, the Törnblom & Hedengrans Fabriksaktiebolag was reconstructed in 1916 and changed the name to Fabriks-AB. Klas Törnblom. The Hedengran & Son company produced a variety of pen and pocketknives. 1

QUEEN CUTLERY #71 JOHN HENRY EXPRESS AUTO KNIFE - VS. - KA-BAR #2179GRIZZLY CLASP KNIFE
During the early 1900s many American cutlers produced large hunting and camping knives that had a fairly simple and robust design. A few examples are the Lever-release and Clasp knives produced by W. R. Case & Sons and the Lever-release and Grizzly Clasp knives produced by Union Cutlery Company (using the trademark kA-BAR from 1923). Recently, Queen Cutlery introduced the #71 John Henry Express Auto using the Schatt and Morgan Cutlery Company stamp. 1Jun

D.R.G.M. SPRINGMESSER - MEADOWS This German Springmesser is one of the largest Leverlock models produced during the pre-WWII era. The front bolster is stamped “D.R.G.M.” and it is pinned to the liner. Pinned bolsters are quite rare on Leverlock models, presumably a pre-1900 trait. The front tang is stamped “Meadows”, and this is likely the company that ordered this contract knife. Size comparison between three common Leverlock sizes. The middle knife is a large size Leverlock.Apr

CAMPER LEVERLOCK MODELS - JAGDSPRINGMESSER BY WILHELM WELTERSBACH In a previous post I showcased a pre-war Camper Leverlock with a Daniel Peres blade stamp (http://thebladeblog-ulf.blogspot.com/2016/10/drgm-jagdspringmesser-daniel-peres-kg.html). This Leverlock was most likely a contract knife manufactured by Wilhelm Weltersbach. Compared to a ‘regular’ large size Leverlock (http://thebladeblog-ulf.blogspot.com/2015/02/german-leverlocks.html), this Camper Leverlock is thicker and comes with various accessories. 2Feb

Here is a Leverlock camper model from the 1930s with a main blade, a pen blade, shot shell extractor (the hole is for extraction of pin-fire cartridges), and a corkscrew. The blade is stamped with Peres’ name and trademark barrel. Peres registered his company in 1878. The company mostly made scissors, razors, pocket knives, and flatware. This Leverlock was most likely made as a contract knife by W. Weltersbach, and not made byPeres. The D.R.G.M.

IMPERIAL AND HAMMER BRAND TOOTHPICK KNIVES ON REPRODUCTIONSPORTSMASTER CARDS
Below are two reproduction cards with an assortment of shell-wrap toothpick knives. Apart from one knife with an Imperial stamp, all knives have Hammer Brand stamps. However, Hammer Brand was essentially the Imperial Knife Company. As shown in the figure below, the company started out as the Imperial Knife Company in the 1920s. In the mid-1930s the name was changed to Hammer Brand – and then in the mid-1940s, it was changed back to Imperial. 1Mar

GERMAN SHELLPULLER HUNTING KNIVES - JAGDMESSER MIT PATRONENZIEHER In the early 1900s most shotguns did not have shotshell extractors. This could be a problem because early shotshells were made of paper, not plastic, and often got 'stuck' once the shotgun was fired. And because they were hot, hunters were less than happy to pull them out with their fingers. As a result, cutlers began making pocket knives with extractors using gauge sizes 12, 16, and 20. Most 1950s shellpuller knives had the shotshell extractors integrated with the top bolster.Total Pageviews
