NOVEMBER FEELINGS LOG FOR KIDSBy Sharla Kostelyk

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends. It’s about getting together, eating great food, and making memories. But for some kids, any holiday or change in routine can bring with it a variety of feelings. This November Feelings Log invites kids to explore their emotions about Thanksgiving, visiting relatives, and the day to day.* Pin
Keeping a daily log of feelings helps kids to examine their emotions. It also allows them and their teacher or parents to analyze any patterns they see emerging when looking back through the log. Doing this quick daily exercise is also a great jumping off point to help kids to talk about their emotions and most importantly, get to the root of why they are feeling the way they are. * Pin I believe in teaching emotions with as much zeal and intention as we teach reading, writing, and math. It is with that belief that I create opportunities for children to learn about emotions and to put that into practise. I’ve put together a special Feelings Log for November (please note that it does contain two questions about Thanksgiving, so if you’re Canadian, this may be more appropriate to use with your child or student in October). It includes a writing prompt, a drawing prompt, and weekly tracking sheet of “Today I feel” along with adorable pumpkin faces to use to help them express their emotions. NOVEMBER FEELINGS LOG:SUPPLIES NEEDED:
* printed Feelings Log pages (download here)
* scissors
* markers, pencil crayons,
or crayons
* pencil or pen

I was attempting to create a Halloween slime, but I’m not very good at scary things, so in the end, I decided that a Monster Slime was about as scary as it was going to get. Apparently, it doesn’t look like a very scary monster at that because one of my daughters took to calling it the Mike Wazowski Slime! So ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I present to you, Mike Wazowski Monster Slime! * Pin HOW TO MAKE MONSTER SLIME:SUPPLIES NEEDED:
* 5 oz. bottle Elmer’s clear school glue* ½ cup water
* ½ tsp baking soda * 1 Tbsp. contact solution * lime green acrylic paint – you could use another colour if youprefer
* green fine glitter* googly eyes
* Pin
Wiggle Eyes Multi-PackElmer’s Clear School Glue, 5 oz.* Pin
Equate Saline Solution * Pin Acrylic Paint Lime GreenDIRECTIONS:
* Pour the entire 5 oz. bottle of clear glue in a bowl. * Add in ½ cup of water. * Add in ½ tsp. of baking soda and stir. * Squirt in some acrylic paint until you achieve the shade of yourliking. Stir well.
* Sprinkle in some green glitter and stir. * Add in lots of googly eyes.
You can use a variety of sizes. * Mix in 1 Tbsp. of contact solution. The slime will instantly beginto form.
* At this point, it will be sticky. Don’t worry. Just keep stirring the solution in the bowl until it starts to form. * Knead the slime until it is no longer sticky. * Store it in an airtight container when you’re not playing withit.
* Pin
This monster slime is cute for using at Halloween parties or even giving as a party favour. You can change the colour by changing the colour of the paint used. Using coloured googly eyes will also change the look of it, so there are many possibilities. * Pin SENSORY AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES: Mixing and kneading this slime while making the recipe provides proprioceptive sensory feedback. The tactile, visual, and proprioceptive sensory systems are all engaged while playing with this Monster Slime. Pulling, pressing, stretching, squeezing, and shaping the slime also helps develop coordination and motor skills. * Pin CHECK OUT SOME OF THESE OTHER HALLOWEEN SLIMES: Halloween Striped Slime* Pin

I truly believe that children learn best through play. Learning about emotions can be especially difficult for kids, so I find it best to take the scariness out of it by making it as easy and light as possible. That’s why I’ve created games and activities to help kids learn these concepts like this Spider Emotions Matching Game.* Pin
Just like in some of the other emotions learning activities I’ve created to help kids such as our Feelings Jenga,
Pirate Emotions Playdough Mats,
Unicorn Emotions Kit,
this was designed with the same purpose in mind. SPIDER EMOTIONS MATCHING GAME:MATERIALS NEEDED:
* scissors
* printed spider emotions pages (download them here)
* Pin
INSTRUCTIONS:
* Print off the pages and cut them into cards. * Set the cards out on a flat surface face down. * Each player takes a turn flipping over two cards. If the description card matches the emotion card, the player keeps both cards. If not, they place them down in the same place face down again. * The player who matches the most pairs wins. For younger kids or kids who struggle more with identifying emotions, you can keep all the cards face up. It then becomes all about matching without the memory portion of the game being involved. * Pin The game requires kids to predict what a certain circumstance or action would cause a spider to feel, so it’s best used to reinforce the concepts in children who already have an emotional vocabulary.
* Pin
These spiders are adorable. This is a cute activity for Hallowe’en at home or in a classroom. It’s a nice one to have set out in a quiet corner for kids who need a calm down area or for students who have completed their other work. Having a special needs child is different for every parent. No matter what your day looks like with your child, it’s important to seek support from other special needs parents. I know you already feel depleted and may be wondering what more you can give, but offering this kind of support will give more than it takes. Trust me. You have something invaluable to offer and by blessing others, you will in turnbe blessed. * Pin
I get it; it can be hard to support each other as special needs parents. However, you can be supportive of each other through experience, respect, and helping one another when you can. Being a friend is one of the best ways special needs parents can support eachother.
HOW SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS CAN SUPPORT EACH OTHER BE RESPECTFUL OF ONE ANOTHER There are going to be different opinions about what’s best for your child or how to handle certain scenarios. We won’t always agree. Even though we have a lot in common as parents of children with special needs, we may also have some different philosophies, parenting styles, values, or ways of coping with or responding to something. Even though you may not agree completely with another parent’s perspective or choices, keep in mind that we all know our own child and our own family best. By remembering that we all love our children and are making our choices from a place of love and protection, we can ensure that we respect the other person even if we don’t always agree with everything they do or say.JUST BE THERE
There is so much relief that comes in having someone who understands, who “gets it”. Just be there. You don’t need to have long drawn out conversations or solve each other’s problems. Just being present and each being able to be with someone who knows what you’re going through is often enough.GET TOGETHER
I know this may be harder with special needs kids, however, it is so important. You need to remember that you are more than just a mom (or a dad). You need to laugh and have a few moments of forgetting your worries at the door. Getting out of the house and visiting another friend is always a special time because it reminds you that you’renot alone.
Go out for coffee, see a comedy or action movie (avoid the dramas – there is likely enough of that in your reality!), try something new like yoga or a pottery class, go for a dinner that you didn’t have to make (and clean up after!), attend a concert or a wine tasting, go for a long walk, it doesn’t matter what you do, just that you go and spend time with someone who can relate to your life. * Pin CELEBRATE THEIR KIDS AND YOURS! No one knows how to celebrate their children and the milestones that they achieve more than special needs parents. One way special needs parents can support each other is by celebrating their kids. Celebrate those milestones, those birthdays, and those special moments. Be the family someone else can call on to celebrate the accomplishments of their special needs kids. BE AVAILABLE TO CHAT WHEN POSSIBLE A quick text or a phone call is sometimes all the support that a special needs parent needs. Having someone that can support you on the other side of the phone is always a nice feeling. Plus, when you’re both special needs parents, you both know that you’re going to need that support. Use technology to make that connection either whether it’s Facebook Messenger, texting, FaceTime, or email, stay in touch with the people who support you.BE WHAT THEY NEED
Imagine the kind of friend you need and try to be that for the other person. And allow them to be there for you when you need them to be. There will be ebbs and flows, times when you are more in crisis mode and need support and times when you can breathe and they need you tostep up.
Look for the positive. But allow the occasional pity party. Bring thechocolate!
It’s hard watching your child struggle. While most of the time, it’s helpful to point out the silver lining and keep your friend focused on the positive, there are moments when it’s ok to say “yep, this stinks.” BE HONEST WITH EACH OTHER There is no worse feeling than feeling like you’re alone and you are the only one in the world experiencing something hard. When it comes to supporting other special needs parents, try to be honest with each other. Let out your real feelings and don’t be afraid to discuss the hard stuff. Holding stuff in not only doesn’t give you the opportunity to process your emotions, it also doesn’t open the door for the other person to be able to have that “me too” moment. And that “me too” moment is about as healing as it gets! When I first started making playdough for my kids (because we all know that homemade playdough is so much better than store bought!), my arm would get sore from all that stirring on the stovetop. Things have come a long way since then. I now make most of my playdough using my KitchenAid mixer, so no more sore arms. But I recently discovered microwave playdough. This could be a game changer. * Pin This quick and easy taste safe microwave playdough recipe includes a variation in case you want to make it without cream of tartar. With all the buzz about the new Frozen movie, we’ve been on a bit of an Elsa kick when it comes to our sensory play like our Frozen InspiredElsa Slime
or our cool Frozen Inspired Sensory Bin.
HOMEMADE MICROWAVE PLAYDOUGH RECIPE: MICROWAVE PLAYDOUGH INGREDIENTS:*
* 1 cup flour
* 1/2 cup salt
* 1 tsp. oil
* 2 tsp. cream of tarter OR 4 tsp. lemon juice* 1 cup water
* blue food colouring * assorted winter sprinkles This Frozen Inspired Elsa Playdough recipe can be doubled if you’re making this for preschool, a classroom, or a large group. * PinDIRECTIONS:
*
* Start by adding your flour, salt, oil, cream of tarter OR lemon juice, and water to a large, microwave safe mixing bowl. * Stir until it is well combined. * Microwave for one minute and stir really well. * Repeat two more times, microwaving one minute each time.* Allow to cool.
* Add in food colouring until you get your desired colour. Kneaddough well.
* Add in the edible sprinkles.
Knead again.
* Let the kids play!* Pin
When you’re not playing with this dough, be sure to store it in anairtight container.
If you’re more of a visual learner, I’ve included a microwave playdough video below. Note: Even though this recipe is taste safe, it is not safe for children to consume large quantities of salt at one time. Adult supervision is required. SENSORY PLAY AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES: Have your child help with the stirring and kneading when making the playdough. This provides visual, tactile, and proprioceptive sensoryfeedback.
Stretching and rolling and squeezing and squishing and pinching and pressing all are great sensory play actions. * Pin Playing with playdough engages not only your child’s senses, but also their imagination. This type of preschool play is also good for developing fine motor skills and coordination. Are you looking for other easy sensory play recipes? Playing Christmas party games at your family gathering, holiday party, office party, or youth event is a great way to break the ice and keep the fun going. * Pin Interactive activities are a great way to make lasting memories. These Christmas party games encourage participation and fun for all. CHRISTMAS PARTY GAMES: I love hosting large gatherings. Honestly, mostly it’s because of the food. I’m an appetizer girl. I love being able to sample little bits of lots and parties are the perfect excuse to do that. But while I have people over, it’s always good to keep them entertained, so we have become a family who loves playing games. These are the best Christmas party games out there. CHRISTMAS MINUTE TO WIN IT Our family loves Minute to Win It games. Last year, I came out with Christmas Minute to Win It games that were hilarious to play and to watch. We all had a riot as we attempted to complete the challenges. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but mine was the Bobbing for Candy Canes game. * Pin All the Minute to Win It Christmas party games can be played in small or large groups and with all ages. This makes them great for pretty much any holiday event. They also require very little set up and the supplies needed are inexpensive. In fact, most of what you need, you probably have around the house already.THE FLOUR GAME
This hilarious game is a family favourite of ours. It’s admittedly more fun to watch it for some than to play it depending on your personality, but if you’re looking for something that is sure to get people engaged and interacting, The Flour Gameis a
great activity for that. * PinTHE BAG GAME
The Bag Game
is
perfect for group gatherings. You can play it regardless of age and it’s a lot of laughs. This is a good one for a youth event or for an office party. It also requires no planning other than to find an empty paper bag or cereal box, making it inexpensive as well. * PinSARAN WRAP BALL
The Saran Wrap Ball Game is quickly becoming a favourite among both children and adults. You can read the rules of the game, ideas for what to stuff it with and setup instructions here.
COOKIE DECORATING CHALLENGE Set out store bought sugar cookie dough, holiday cookie cutters, icing, sprinkles, and baking sheets. Put everyone in teams and let the fun begin! It’s best to set a timer so that it adds another elementof hilarity.
This is a great holiday activity because judging the results is almost as much fun as decorating the cookies. It’s also a great activity for mixing a variety of ages so that all family members from toddlers to grandparents can play.CHRISTMAS CHARADES
The Joys of Boys has made an easy Christmas Charades printable party game that’s fun for families. It’s a fun holiday take on a classic. NAME THAT CHRISTMAS CAROL There are several variations of this game out there. I’ve included some below so that you can find the one that works best for you. * Christmas Carols by Another Name * Can You Name That Carol?* Name That Carol
SCAVENGER HUNT
A Christmas Scavenger Huntcan be a good
party game or can be used to create a new holiday tradition with your family. If you’re creating one to use at a party, you can use little trinkets along the way so that everyone who participates gets a prize or a larger gift for the winner at the end. CHRISTMAS BOARD GAMES* Pin

CHRISTMAS TRIVIA GAME These Christmas Trivia Games are such a great way to get conversations started. If your gathering is something where guests will be seated around tables such as a women’s brunch or a potluck, trivia games are the perfect way to break the ice. There are printable sheets you can print out for everyone playing. The questions are challenging enough to really spark conversation. If you’re looking for a holiday trivia game that children can also participate in, then I would recommend this oneinstead.
GINGERBREAD HOUSE DECORATING CHALLENGE For those who love watching baking challenges, this one is a lot of fun. Set out the supplies for decorating the houses: gingerbread, icing, candy, icing sugar, sprinkles, candy canes, wafers, etc. Split everyone into teams and set a timer. The team to complete the best house (according to a majority vote) wins! * Pin Instead of gingerbread houses, we make Rice Krispie houses. That way, they can be shaped into trees or any type of building shape and can still be decorated the same way a gingerbread house would be. TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE CHRISTMAS PARTY GAME In this version of Two Truths and a Lie, there is a Christmas twist. Each person takes a turn saying the three worst Christmas gifts they’ve ever received. Two of them are true and one of them is a lie. The others have to try to correctly guess which one is the lie. SNOWMAN BUILDING CONTEST Break out into teams. Choose a set amount of time and start the timer. Each team has until the end of the clock to make the most unique or best snowman they can. The first, second, and third place winners are then chosen. If you want to, you can provide a prize for the winner.CANDY CANE GUESS
Fill a medium or large container with small candy canes or another holiday themed candy. Set out small pieces of paper and pens. Have each person at the party write down their guess for how many candies are in the jar. Be sure to have them write their name on their paper. The player who guesses closest to the actual number gets to take home the jar full of candy.HOLIDAY PICTIONARY
Divide into two teams. Write down Christmas themed words or phrases on papers. One player on each team must draw what is on their paper while their team attempts to guess what it is. The team with the most pointswins.
You can make the cards easy or more difficult depending of the age of people participating. For an adults only party, you can use ones that will be more challenging to draw and guess. Here are some ideas for what words or phrases to add to your Christmas Pictionary game:* White Christmas
* reindeer
* Santa Claus

This game follows the rules of the card game Spoon , but instead of spoons, you place candy canes in the middle of the table. The game lasts much longer because you have to spell out c-a-n-d-y-c-a-n-e-s. Good luck!GUESS THAT CAROL
Get out someone’s phone and find Christmas music either on their playlist or on something such as Spotify or YouTube. Play 15 seconds or less of each song and see who can be the first to shout out the name of the Christmas carol. This works really well in teams if youhave a large group.
WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE I still remember the first time I participated in a White Elephant Gift Exchange. There were a lot of laughs and quite honestly, also some hard feelings as not all of the kids playing wound up with the present they were hoping for. There are many variations on a White Elephant Gift Exchange. Find the rules of a White Elephant Gift exchange as well as read about some of the common types that are played. One of my favourites is when you bring something from home that you’re no longer using as your gift. It’s a great way to reuse items that others may love that no longer bring you joy. It also means you don’t have to spend any extra money at what is already an expensive time of year.HOLIDAY PUZZLES
I know this is not exactly a “game”, however I always have a table or two set up over the holidays with a puzzle set out. We know a handful of people who HATE playing games. Having a puzzle out gives them something to do if they choose not to participate in the other Christmas party games. We’ve found that by the end of the evening, we often have quite a crowd gathered around the puzzle table and it becomes very interactive and sometimes even a little bit competitive! We often set up two puzzle tables. One is a more complicated puzzle with a lot of pieces and the other is an easier one for kids. You don’t have to choose a holiday themed puzzle. You can choose one that is meaningful for your family or one that is quirky or fun. It can be reminiscent of a vacation or childhood memory or represent an interest or hobby.
