Lanesfield Historic Site In the 1860s, the town of Lanesfield was a small but bustling community, located along the Santa Fe Trail. Today, nothing remains of the historic town except its 1869 stone schoolhouse and some outbuildings. Interpreters at the site lead tours and programs through the remaining 150-year-old structures. The visitors center has exhibits explaining the significance of the site and provides guests with modern amenities.2
Page Belting Company Mills The four-building complex, which was built during the period of 1892 - 1906, stood as the home to the Page Belting Company. The factory produced belts for machinery, a coveted product during the Industrial Revolution. The Page Brothers patented several items that worked effectively in high-powered machines, making the product appealing to companies throughout the Untied States as well as internationally.3
S.S. Emidio Memorial This memorial commemorates the sinking of the American oil tanker S.S. Emidio on December 20, 1941, just a few weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, by a Japanese submarine. The incident was the first attack conducted by the Japanese Imperial Navy along the California Coast. The memorial includes a historical marker affixed to a large boulder, an anchor, an interpretive sign, a flagpole, and, most notably, a portion of the hull, which was salvaged from the wreckage of the ship that sailed—abandoned—northward and broke up just off the coast of Crescent City. A portion of the hull flowed into the harbor where it still remains today.4

Lent-Riker-Smith Homestead and Cemetery Built in the 1650s, the Lent-Riker-Smith Homestead is one of the oldest buildings in New York City. Situated on one of the oldest highways in Queens, the home was originally a one-room timber and fieldstone structure. It was built by a local farmer named Abraham Rycken Van Lent. Over a number of years and several different spellings, the Rycken family became known as Riker and would eventually own the island of the same name. The property passed through different owners over the years, eventually passing to Michael and Marion Smith. The home is a New York City Landmark and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.6
Trinidad Head Lighthouse At just 20 feet tall and very small compared to most lighthouses, the Trinidad Head Light doesn't need to be any higher as it is perched on a bluff that is 193 feet above the ocean. Built in 1871, the light is still an active navigational aid; its light is visible 14 nautical miles (16 miles) away. The fog horn is located inside the old bell house, which is situated a bit down the coastline. The original bell is on display next to a replica of the lighthouse, which can be found in a memorial park that affords great views of the bay. The lighthouse is named after the large, dome-shaped piece of land that juts out from the mainland and forms Trinidad Bay. Visitors can hike to the lighthouse via the Trinidad Head Trail. It appears that it is occasionally open to the public.7
New Hampshire Farm Museum Comprising two adjacent properties, the New Hampshire Farm Museum is a working demonstration farm that also serves as both an open-air and traditional museum. The land on which it sits was originally settled in the late 1770s and its buildings date from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Patrons can meander through its Great Barn which contains various farm implements, tools, wagons, and sleighs. They can also tour the Jones’ Farmhouse, with its rooms decorated in various styles from different eras and the museum’s tavern which dates back to 1810. Visitors can also feed the domesticated livestock, which includes pigs, goats and chickens and purchase various museum related items from its Country Store. The Farm Museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.8
Judge Cordell D. Meeks, Sr. Home Constructed in 1903, this became the home of Judge Cordell D. Meeks, Sr. the first African American District Court judge in Kansas, when he acquired the property in 1949 from Judge Charles W. Trickett. He was also an active member of many community organizations and a leader in the city. Meeks mentions the home in his autobiography: “As a child I had lived for a short time in the 600 block of New Jersey. On afternoons and Saturdays when I walked to my afterschool job in the grocery store on 5th Street, I had to pass by a big house at 600 Oakland. To me the house looked like a beautiful castle. I would look up from Sixth Street and admire the architecture and day dream about living in it someday.” The home would be host to many political events and meetings over the years, as Meeks became actively involved with the Democratic Party. His wife lived in the home until her death in May of 2011. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Judge Cordell Meeks, Sr Plaza is located adjacent to the Wyandotte County Courthouse where Meeks presided overthe District Court.

HUNTINGTON TUMBLER COMPANY (1891-1932) The Huntington Tumbler Company was one of the earliest glass factories to exist in the area. It opened as the West Virginia Flint Bottle Company around 1891 along with the nearby Central City Window Glass Company, which was owned by the same investors. It was acquired by the Zihlman family in 1901, who renamed the company and expanded its range of products. Huntington Tumbler became known for making ornate, high quality glass pieces such as tumblers, stemware, vases, and candlesticks. Its glassware was sold both locally and internationally, with products exported to places such as Latin America and Europe. The economic downturn caused by the Great Depression forced the business to close in 1932. The factory was demolished in the 1940s, leaving nophysical remnants.

WELCOME TO CLIO 2.0! Thanks to donors and supporters, our new website and mobile applications are finally here! You’ll notice some changes, and as always, there will be that mutual learning curve that comes with updates to a familiar website. We tested and retested, and while we know that you will love some of the changes, we also know that we probably got a few things wrong. If you notice a bug or have an idea, we hope you’ll tell us. We’re easy to reach at clio@theclio.com We built this new platform to make it easier to roll out new features and improvements throughout the coming year. This new platform will make it much easier for us to keep up with new technology and add new features, and we want to start by thanking the National Endowment for the Humanities. We also want to thank West Virginia Humanities and two dozen individual donors. This new version includes several new features, and we’re already working on many, many more. So what’s new? We changed nearly everything from the backend to the way our database interacts with our website and mobile applications. Many changes were necessary to adapt to rapidly growing userbase that sometimes exceeded the limits of our old platform. At the same time, we hope Clio 2.0 feels familiar and intuitive. Here is a sample of some of the latest updates: We added a place to store images and audio files so that authors can add audio narration for each entry and also images beyond 2MB. We kept the text-to-speech function, but now authors can add original narration that could include multiple voices and even clips from oral histories. We also added new features for users such as a “magic button” that will reverse the order of a walking tour. And we hope you think this is cool… there’s a second button that will turn a digital walking tour into a PDF you can download or print for offline use. We also expanded the options for organizations and instructors using Clio to map the history and culture of their communities with students. For example, museums, historical societies, and other organizations can now create complete walking tours within a single Clio entry. We believe that this last feature will be useful for creating walking tours of historic districts, parks, sculpture gardens, cemeteries, and state and national parks. Our next challenge? Allowing users to be guided by an augmented reality arrow as they enjoy a walking tour that includes audio narration along their entire route in addition to narration and information available within individual entries. We’re also working on securing funding to make Clio more accessible to those with vision or hearing loss. What has not changed? We still believe that technology can help make those moments happen more often by connecting curiosity with expertise. We still believe that history has the potential to offer perspective and broaden perspectives. Guided by these beliefs, our mission to make mobile technology available for scholars and organizations so that they can connect residents and visitors to nearby history and culture in ways that build more informed citizens and more engaged communities. Thanks to tax-deductible donations and the support of several foundations, Clio is free for everyone. We hope that this modern incarnation of the ancient muse will inspire you to see history and culture wherever you travel. Clio began seven years ago as a one-semester experiment in an introductory history class in the heart of Appalachia. In 2012, I challenged my students at Marshall University with the following statement: “let’s build something that connects people to nearby history.” Four months later, my students were challenging me. They told me how this thing we built (we would later name the platform in honor of Clio, the muse of history) had inspired them to visit historical sites with friends and family members. They also shared how they went beyond online sources and made phone calls, searched local archives, and interviewed people to create Clio entries for places that mattered to them. This transformative moment is what educators live for, and my only question was what would I do to make this available for others to create entries and walking tours in their community. The last six years have been incredible, with donations from over fifty people and entries and walking tours from over three hundred organizations. 100% of these funds have supported paid internships, modest stipends for editors, and improvements to the website and mobile application. Thank you for making this possible. David TrowbridgeAssociate Professor of History Marshall UniversityINDIVIDUAL ENTRIES
