UK farming unions warn of rising dairy production costs and lack of sustainable milk price. The UK farming unions are warning that the dairy industry is facing an extremely challenging year on the back of spiralling production costs and variable milk prices. Australia Institute responds to ag-sector criticisms of its latest emissionsreport.
RATIONS FOR DAIRY CATTLE Citrus pulp is a source of digestible fiber and adds bulk to rations. Also, it can replace a portion of the forage fiber, but is relatively low in protein. When combinations of these feeds are used it becomes unclear as to what the maximums should be. Generally, limit combinations of these feeds to no more than 25% of the ration drymatter.

Both cows and bulls are very docile and so are easy to handle, they DAIRY FARMING IN LITHUANIA The somatic cell count stands at 250,000, which is considered satisfactory. (In comparison family farms which have around 150 cows average 11500kg per lactation). There is a 40 per cent replacement rate at the Litagra farm, which would ideally be 30 per cent. An even calving pattern is in place with cows calving on a regular basis theyear round.
THE “BEST” DAIRY CALF HOUSING DESIGN? Ventilation– Proper ventilation means providing fresh air to remove organisms from the environment -- less dust, eliminating noxious odors, removing excess moisture and excess heat. However, too much air movement can chill the calf. Calf hutch design should allow steady air movement without draft. For calves housed inside, ventilation needs increase with age and as temperatures rise. DAIRY TRADE FLOWS BETWEEN THE US AND CANADA The IREP is a very popular program for both Canadians and Americans as this is the main vehicle through which US dairy exports enter Canada (outside the quota). One example is butter imported into Canada from the United States. Canada has a quota on butter of 3,274 MT. Any butter imported above that amount is subject to a tariff of 289.5 percent.
THE DRY COW PERIOD STEP-BY-STEP From the standpoint of udder physiology, the dry period can be divided into 3 stages: Active involution: This is the first two weeks after drying off, milk is absorbed, immunity suppressed and passive immunity installed. Daily production peaks at day 4. OVERSTOCKING: AT THE STALL AND THE FEED BUNK Overstocking typically occurs in two areas of the barn: at the freestall and at the feed bunk. TIPS TO IMPROVE THE SUCCESS OF WEANING BEEF CALVES Fall is officially here and with it will bring the country sound of calves bawling as weaning occurs on beef cattle farms. This time of year can be busy with field crops, getting the last cutting of hay and other farm activities. Take some time to prepare for weaning of the beef calves to add value to the calf crop prior to marketing. Weaning preparation can reduce stress for you and the calves.
