Writing in UNA-UK's magazine, Lakhdar Brahimi critiques the UN's diplomatic efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict, reiterating the role of Member States in empowering the UN to succeed and the parties to the conflict being willing to compromise. WHO WE ARE | THE ELDERS Our vision is of a world where people live in peace, conscious of their common humanity and their shared responsibilities for each other, for the planet and for future generations.. Working both publicly and through private diplomacy, our mission is to engage with global leaders and civil society at all levels to resolve conflict and address its root causes, to challenge injustice, and toSTATE OF HOPE
The Elders’ State of Hope will address the biggest challenges of our time in a unique week of talks and digital discussions, from 12 July2021.
HOW WE WORK
In July 2007 Nelson Mandela founded The Elders and we began working for peace, justice and human rights for all. Discover the story of how the Elders were mandated with Madiba’s vision, their reflections on being invited to join, their impact and how they seek THE ELDERS CALL ON G7 LEADERS TO SEIZE THE MOMENT ON The Elders call on G7 leaders to take urgent action on vaccine distribution and pledge new climate finance at the G7 summit 11-13 June, or risk further weakening the multilateral system on which future progress and prosperity depends. CHANGING THE NARRATIVE ON GENDER JUSTICE In February 2021, UN Youth Envoy Jayathma Wickramanayake attended The Elders’ high-level workshop on access to justice for women and girls. In this special guest blog, she reflects on access to justice, ahead of the Generation Equality Forum. A little more than a year agoI
STRENGTHENING THE UNITED NATIONS The Elders launched a specific initiative on “Strengthening the UN” at the Munich Security Conference in 2015.They proposed four reforms to the UN’s peace and security architecture that would enhance the organisation’s legitimacy and efficacy: a new category of membership for the UN Security Council; a pledge from Permanent Members not to use their veto to prevent action against massACCESS TO JUSTICE
More than five billion people still live outside the protection of the law. When justice and security is only available to the rich and the powerful, when there is impunity for those who break laws and abuse rights, this weakens states and their capacity to preserve the rule of law and to pursue development, social justice and economic growth as agreed under the SDGs. 2021 MUST BE A YEAR OF ENLIGHTENED AND EMPATHETIC ACTION The past twelve months have been devastating for millions of people across the world, in terms of health, security, prosperity and community. COVID-19 has turned the world upside down, and even though we can all take heart from the roll-out of vaccines, it is clear that we will be living with the pandemic and its impact on the global economy for much of the year ahead. VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IS A GLOBAL INJUSTICE Access to justice is crucial in the fight to end violence against women.. The Elders are marking 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence by calling for leadership and investment to enable women to fulfil their unmet justice needs, including services for survivors of gender-based violence.. Over the coming weeks, we will be highlighting why violence against women is a profound FIVE REASONS CLIMATE CHANGE IS THE GREATEST EXISTENTIAL Climate change is the greatest existential threat of our time, its impacts are felt in all countries across the world and will impact on each and every one of us.Jump to navigation
