Only the Forth Road Bridge features footpaths and cycle paths, allowing visitors to enjoy spectacular views of both the Forth Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing. There is a footpath on either side of the Forth Road Bridge. The east footpath links into National Cycle Route 1 and is kept open at all times except in high winds above50mph.
PROTECTING BREEDING TERNS NEAR THE FORTH ROAD BRIDGE With major works in progress on the Forth Road Bridge’s main expansion joints, special measures have been put in place by BEAR Scotland to protect a nearby colony of seabirds from noise and visual disturbance during their breeding period, which typically runs from approximately May until August.NORTH ROAD NETWORK
Hard shoulders available as temporary bus lanes when the Forth Road Bridge is closed: On the Queensferry Crossing, buses and coaches carrying 24 seated passengers or more may use the hard shoulders (northbound and southbound) as bus lanes when the Forth Road Bridge is closed (e.g. due to high winds) and when appropriate signs aredisplayed.
MAIN CABLE ACOUSTIC MONITORING Work on the Upgrading of the Main Cable Acoustic Monitoring Project is now complete. The project's purpose was to increase the likelihood of detecting wire breaks among the 11,618 individual high tensile steel wires that make up each cable. Given the history and work carried out on the main cables, and the estimated reduction in strength that has been established, it is important to maintain MAIN CABLE REPLACEMENT STUDY Main cable replacement study. Following the discovery of corrosion within the main cables of the Forth Road bridge, consulting engineers WA Fairhurst were appointed in September 2006 to examine possible options for the replacement or augmentation of the main cables. FORTH ROAD BRIDGE MAIN EXPANSION JOINTS: SOUTHBOUND The completion of these works means that the Forth Road Bridge can be used as an emergency diversion route, should the Queensferry Crossing have to close for an extended period. Work to replace the main expansion joints in the northbound carriageway will commence in April 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of October 2021. PROCUREMENT AND CONSTRUCTION Procurement and construction. The procurement exercise for the project was one of the biggest ever undertaken in Scotland. Various methods of funding and constructing the project were considered before Ministers decided the most suitable procurement route was a traditional “design and build” contract for a fixed price and funded from MAIN CABLE INSPECTION An internal inspection of the Forth Road Bridge main cables is programmed to be carried out during 2018. A tender competition to appoint a suitably qualified contractor has been carried out and a contractor is expected to be appointed during September 2017. The contractor will then have until March 2018 to either refurbish theexisting main

Hard shoulders available as temporary bus lanes when the Forth Road Bridge is closed: On the Queensferry Crossing, buses and coaches carrying 24 seated passengers or more may use the hard shoulders (northbound and southbound) as bus lanes when the Forth Road Bridge is closed (e.g. due to high winds) and when appropriate signs aredisplayed.
VISITING FAQS
Only the Forth Road Bridge features footpaths and cycle paths, allowing visitors to enjoy spectacular views of both the Forth Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing. There is a footpath on either side of the Forth Road Bridge. The east footpath links into National Cycle Route 1 and is kept open at all times except in high winds above50mph.
