THE GAMES JOURNAL
The Games Journal was a monthly magazine about boardgames which ran from July, 2000 until September, 2005. A declining number of submissions forced us to shut our doors (metaphorically speaking) and abandon the regular, monthly issues. However, we have kept the site up and running since we feel that there is great value in the articles,reviews
WHAT IS A GAME?
WHAT MAKES A GAME GOOD? Freshness and replayability. The more a game makes its players want to play again, the better the game. An important aspect of this is the course the game takes should be as different as possible each time it is played. A game lacking this quality will soon become boring. EDUCATIONAL VALUE OF GAMES R ecent publications allege that high school and elementary school students' grades improve when students play Chess.If an empirical, scientific study could be performed, I believe that it would validate that claim. R eading Alan Moon's confession in Counter #12 made me realize that I, too, must come clean. I first became aware of the German game craze in 1996 and I instigated a regular gaming night. Hare & Tortoise is one of the few "German-style" games that can justifiably be called a classic. It has been printed in many versions and almost as many languages. There are even at least two known "pirated" versions of the game. The game itself is fairly straightforward but allows for a surprising amount of subtlety andclever play.

Ta Yü has chunky, elegant tiles and a solid, deep blue board. It is very appealing aesthetically. Hence I was filled with anticipation as I opened the box, looking forward to a great theme and quality materials embellishing an abstract connection game. Ta Yü has met myhigh expectations.
