Nutrition wonk: This is a site for the folks who love nutrition as much as they love food. Nutrition Wonk gets into the weeds of nutrition science, old and new, to examine protocols, outcomes, and historical contexts for nutrition claims. BOOK REVIEW: "ALWAYS HUNGRY" BY DR. DAVID LUDWIG Welcome to the book review section of NutritionWonk, where we try to deconstruct popular diets by examining the science underlying the major claims. Introduction: Always Hungry and the Diet Book Literary Tradition Always Hungry, by Harvard endocrinologist Dr. David Ludwig, is the latest bestseller claiming to buck the conventional wisdom. MUST READ BOOKS ABOUT NUTRITION THAT AREN'T DIET BOOKS It's January and you might be swamped with Facebook stories about your friends going on cleanses, or hot yoga binges, or committing to a month with no added sugar, or eating strictly cotton balls. Or they're reading some book heavy on the nutribabble and light on the science and telling you ALL ABOUT IT. Le sigh. Maybe you- the dedicated nutrition nerd - need to escape from the madness. ANCEL KEYS AND THE SEVEN COUNTRIES STUDY: NEW PAPER! Check out this WHITE PAPER from the True Health Initiative on the Seven Countries Study. What is it, what are the controversies, and what is true? Ancel Keys, Time Magazine, 1961 In 2016, I wrote a piece as a response to the viral article "The Sugar Conspiracy," reexamining some of the claims of the author, particularly with regards to Ancel Keys and the Seven Countries Study. THE CONVENIENCE OF A MEAL-KIT, MINUS THE $$$? A REVIEW OF Verdict: The Mealime app is a fun, convenient way to get the novelty and flavor of a "meal-kit" without the cost! My personal nutrition and cooking style led me to alter some of the cooking fats (and salt) in the recipes, but overall we really enjoyed our experience. I definitely recommend you download the app and see for yourself. IS THE INSULIN THEORY OF OBESITY OVER? Kevin Hall, PhD, says his most recent metabolic ward study combined with the paper his team released over the summer falsifies the insulin-carbohydrate theory of obesity. The insulin theory of obesity, in short, posits that higher carbohydrate diets increase insulin secretion, which then drives fat storage and essentially “starves” muscles and organs of energy. BEHIND THE NEWS SAYING "SATURATED FAT COULD BE GOOD FOR YOU" Interestingly, the authors thought that to really test the effects of macronutrients (specifically saturated fat vs. carbohydrate), participants should get the majority of their calories from the same food items, though in differing amounts. JESSE LOST 70 POUNDS... AND KEPT IT OFF FOR 10 YEARS One of my good friends from high school, Jesse, started losing weight when we were teenagers. Between freshman and senior year, he achieved a total transformation (and I think it might embarrass him, but he was Prom Prince our junior year). Now, an assistant film editor in LA, Jesse has maintained his weight loss for an impressive 10 years. I definitely recommend you download the app and see for yourself. Le sigh. Maybe you- the dedicated nutrition nerd - need to escape from the madness.RESEARCH REVIEW

DAVID LUDWIG Welcome to the book review section of NutritionWonk, where we try to deconstruct popular diets by examining the science underlying the major claims. DO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN? Recently, renowned cardiologist and epidemiologist Dr. Harlan Krumholz wrote a piece entitled, "Why One Cardiologist has Drunk his Last Diet Soda." In it, he lays out the case that artificial sweeteners are not physiologically inert and that they are likely harmful due to consistent associations between artificial sweetener intake and risk for weight gain and adverse cardiometabolic outcomes. BEHIND THE NEWS SAYING "SATURATED FAT COULD BE GOOD FOR YOU" Interestingly, the authors thought that to really test the effects of macronutrients (specifically saturated fat vs. carbohydrate), participants should get the majority of their calories from the same food items, though in differing amounts.NUTRITION WONK
