HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT) Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) HRT is medication that mimics the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. It can be prescribed to women going through menopause to relieve menopausal symptoms, to prevent bone loss and to treat osteoporosis. When you reach the menopause, oestrogen levels decrease which causes many women developsymptoms
CARING FOR YOUR BACK Caring for your back. Most people with osteoporosis are unlikely to experience a spinal fracture during exercise. Keeping your back straight and learning safe moving and lifting techniques minimises your risk of spinal fractures and may help to relieve pain. Thisapplies equally to
RECOVERING FROM A SPINAL FRACTURE A spinal fracture is when a bone in your spine becomes compressed or squashed after losing strength. It's not the same as a broken back, so be reassured it doesn't lead to a risk of being paralysed. A spinal fracture takes between six and 12 weeks to heal. ROS ANNOUNCES ITS INTENTION TO RELOCATE TO CONNECT BETTER The Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) has today announced its intention to relocate to a city centre location. This decision has been prompted by changes in working patterns caused by the pandemic, with employees now favouring a hybrid working model where they enjoy the best of both worlds between home-based and office-based activity.MANAGING PAIN
Managing pain. If you’re in pain after a broken bone, it can be managed. There are things you can do to help lessen the pain and continue your daily life in as much comfort as possible. WHICH MEDICATION SHOULD I TAKE? The way a medication is taken. Osteoporosis medications are taken in a variety of ways, including: tablets. drinks. injections. infusions. You can discuss the different options with your doctor, who can help you work out which is best for you. For example: if you already have an irritated food pipe or difficulties swallowing, your doctor is MOVING AND LIFTING SAFELY 0:00 / 1:00. Live. •. You need to be able to bend forward and move around for everyday activities. This is generally safe and won’t cause a broken bone. During the pandemic, all face-to-face meetings and activities led by our volunteers have been suspended, but many support groups and teams are running regular online meetings. VITAMIN D IS ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTHY BONES, BUT FEW PEOPLE Despite vitamin D being essential for healthy bones, only half of people (51%) realise that it is important for bone health and 43% have never even considered what they need to do to look after their bones, according to a recent poll of 2,000 UK adults by YouGov and commissioned by the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS)*. EXERCISE FOR BACK PAIN Try to do these exercises at least once a day. Slowly move into the desired positions, as far as your pain allows, using the correct technique.
