MOBY-DICK: INTENTIONALLY MESSY, EXCEEDINGLY AMBITIOUS With their version of Moby-Dick, Dave Malloy and Rachel Chavkin have created a vision of America today colliding with America in the 1850s that’s as messy and ambitious as both the source material and the nation it’s embodying. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A CASUAL QUEEN After seeing Bohemian Rhapsody last Saturday, I thought of the idea for this week’s piece. My first experience with Queen (besides hearing my parents play their music) was doing a choral version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” with my college choir. IN A WORLD OF GODS AMONG MEN --- A LOOK AT HADESTOWN If you read my last article before the break, I said Hadestown was my most anticipated Broadway musical this year. In this article, I wanted to point out several reasons Hadestown is likely to be a different experience than others.. Hadestown started with the 2010 folk opera album of the same name by Anaïs Mitchell. The musical is a retelling of the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice. RELIGION IN THE PRINCE OF EGYPT Ah, The Prince of Egypt.DreamWorks’ greatest animated achievement, a true masterpiece. Who could hate it? With beautiful animation, a stellar story, and songs that make you want to get up and sing, this movie has ensured its place in my heart as one of the best animatedfilms of all time.
HOME, LOVE, FAMILY I WILL NEVER BE COMPLETE UNTIL I FIND I cherish the musical Anastasia. As a fan of the movie I waited years for a stage production, and I finally saw the show on September 30, 2018. CHRISTIANITY IN THEATRE, OR WHY JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Superstar takes the events of the Gospels and both eliminates and tosses in elements in order to portray the characters the way the writers desire them to be portrayed. Jesus Christ, instead of infallibly being understood as the Son of God, is presented as a fame-loving, self-absorbed pop star figure with delusions of grandeur.ACTING IDENTITY
Acting is, at its simplest, the attempt to most accurately and authentically portray the experience of someone who is not you. An actor who grew up a Girl Scout may play a character who grew up a soccer player. An actor who is shy may play a character who is boisterous. An actor who is gay may play a character who is straight. I'M HERE: MY EXPERIENCE SEEING THE COLOR PURPLE FOR THE I didn’t expect to be nearly as affected by this show as I was. Papermill Playhouse in Millburn New Jersey is celebrating its 80th anniversary and the first show of the season was the touring production of The Color Purple revival. THE WRITING ON THE WALL: THE USE OF BROWNFACE IN THEATRE The use of brownface, I believe, stems from a systemic lack of representation. Only recently have there been any South Asian actors on Broadway that fans can recall by name - Shoba Narayan comes to mind. Shows touted for their diversity, such as Hamilton, are filled with mostly Black and Latinx actors. The main theme of the story is having to choose between love and fear. However, alongside that, there is a secondary underlying topic of racialprejudice.

A DARK SIDE OF STAGEDOORING That’s creepy, right? Well, it’s exactly what happened to Cody Simpson during his first stagedoor experience, just with the genders reversed. When a guy does that sort of thing to a woman, it’s rightfully considered sexual harassment, but when a woman does it to a guy, it’s brushed off by many as cute, funny, and endearing. THE BISEXUAL BUZZWORD In a musical theatre piece on Broadway in this day and age, to be so quiet for so long is risky and daring. Fortunately The Band’s Visit - book writer Itamar Moses, composer and lyricist David Yazbek, director David Cromer, and the entire cast and creative team - have taken the risk of silence. HIS NAME IS LITERALLY CRUTCHIE Crutchie. Yes, that’s his name. That’s it. That is all he gets. He is literally defined by his disability. And I understand that dumb nicknames are common among kids; beyond that, I know for a THE THEATRICAL BOARD Rachel has shared how important theatre is to her in past pieces, but this piece is going to explain a good part of why and how going to the theatre to specific shows or to repeatedly going to see the same people in different shows, makes her feel at home both with herself and the world around her.
