WHY HUGH JACKMAN IS IMPORTANT A big part of the reason for The Greatest Showman’s whopping success is, without a doubt, Hugh Jackman. Not only did he turn in a warm, enjoyable performance filled with an earnest enthusiasm that bounced off the screen, but he also was the one who made this movie happen in the first place! Jackman has mentioned multiple times that he had to I'M HERE: MY EXPERIENCE SEEING THE COLOR PURPLE FOR THE I didn’t expect to be nearly as affected by this show as I was. It was different in a way that, in my opinion, it shouldn’t be. Women can call the shots from any part of a show, be it on stage or off. To be in a room full of women is what theater could be, and I for one cannot wait to work on my next majority female production. THIS PERFORMANCE CONTAINS: TRIGGER WARNINGS IN THEATRE That is why trigger warnings exist. IN A WORLD OF GODS AMONG MEN --- A LOOK AT HADESTOWN If you read my last article before the break, I said Hadestown was my most anticipated Broadway musical this year. In this article, I wanted to point out several reasons Hadestown is likely to be a different experience than others.. Hadestown started with the 2010 folk opera album of the same name by Anaïs Mitchell. The musical is a retelling of the Greek myth Orpheus and Eurydice. IN A WORLD LIKE THIS: A BRONX TALE AND RACE A Bronx Tale is about the life of a young Calogero (frequently called “C”), as he navigates his relationships with Sonny (the mob boss), his parents, his friends, and Jane, his first love. The main theme of the story is having to choose between love and fear. However, alongside that, there is a secondary underlying topic of racialprejudice.

CHRISTIANITY IN THEATRE, OR WHY JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Superstar takes the events of the Gospels and both eliminates and tosses in elements in order to portray the characters the way the writers desire them to be portrayed. A DARK SIDE OF STAGEDOORING That’s creepy, right? Well, it’s exactly what happened to Cody Simpson during his first stagedoor experience, just with the genders reversed. When a guy does that sort of thing to a woman, it’s rightfully considered sexual harassment, but when a woman does it to a guy, it’s brushed off by many as cute, funny, and endearing. Acting is, at its simplest, the attempt to most accurately and authentically portray the experience of someone who is not you. An actor who grew up a Girl Scout may play a character who grew up a soccer player. An actor who is shy may play a character who is boisterous. An actor who is gay may play a character who is straight. I'M HERE: MY EXPERIENCE SEEING THE COLOR PURPLE FOR THE I didn’t expect to be nearly as affected by this show as I was. Papermill Playhouse in Millburn New Jersey is celebrating its 80th anniversary and the first show of the season was the touring production of The Color Purple revival. THE WRITING ON THE WALL: THE USE OF BROWNFACE IN THEATRE The use of brownface, I believe, stems from a systemic lack of representation. Only recently have there been any South Asian actors on Broadway that fans can recall by name - Shoba Narayan comes to mind. Shows touted for their diversity, such as Hamilton, are filled with mostly Black and Latinx actors. While actors, I believe, can and should be cast as characters with different identities from themselves if they are the best for the part, we also must be careful not to let actors from minority identities and experiences be excluded from telling their own stories, systematically or not.
