HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
A glimpse into the day to day of foster parenting, adoption, and real life as a working mom with a passion for kids to have permanency. Do not reblog personal photos. HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, SICK, SICK, SICK Sick, sick, sick . I took H in to see the doctor today because we are on week five of a pesistent cough and cold. His oxygen is 95ish despite a round of steroids, a three day HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, SO MUCH PROGRESS WAS MADE TODAY! DS So much progress was made today! DS and I started power washing all of the gutters so they can be hung back up and not look terrible. (We are too cheap to buy new ones.) I’m also trying to track down HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, THIS WEEK This Week1. Court 2. Varicose vein flare up which necessitated an ER visit and now follow up. 3. IEP meeting 4. E is in a mid-week wedding. DH is now also in the wedding (usher). DD was asked HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, GRATEFUL GratefulSo much to be thankful for here: 1. DH is home! The van is in our driveway! (I have yet to go out and take a look at it because that’s just been the kind of night we’ve had around here). 2. DH HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, LYING Y’all, I am having the most difficult time with Ms. 6 and her lying. I’m not sure why it is getting under my skin so much. I think it’s because both of my older girls struggle with lying and then they want to cozy up next to me after they’ve lied to me and have me be super HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, MY DAY: APPLE PIE MAKING AND BAKING My day: apple pie making and baking, lecture prepping and recording, tile removal which I am crying over because I’m so mad that the tile people installed it incorrectly and now I’m dealing with the stress of trying to remove it without wrecking the drywall. HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, MOM UPDATE Mom UpdateI brought my parents home from the ER around 1am. The CAT scan they did came back normal as did my mom’s preliminary bloodwork. I FaceTimed with her HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, Y’ALL, WE FINALLY BIT THE BULLET, AND Y’all, we finally bit the bullet, and hired someone to replace the roof and siding on our nearly 100 year old home. However, we are taking the old siding down ourselves. Unfortunately, the original HOPE FOR THE FUTURE, THIS IS MY FIRST BAKING ATTEMPT IN This is my first baking attempt in the cast iron skillet. My cast iron experience in general is low. I feel like my cookie tastes like thepan.

We got a call to do emergency weekend respite for the sibling of one of our kids (the adoption disruption). As much as I would have loved to have said yes, I just could not throw that on our child.HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
I took my first cake order since July. It is a triple layer 6” chocolate chip cookie cake with mini cookies baked into the cake layers. The icing is chocolate chip cookie dough, covered in semi-sweet chocolate ganache, and topped with edible cookie dough.HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
Totally caught up this week in reminiscing about H’s birth. Here he is ready to go home from the hospital the day after he was born. He was 11 pounds, 5 ounces, and didn’t fit into newborn diapers.HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
DS had jazz band this morning which was an early morning drop off, and a pick up just after 7am. DD had an early shift at work and had an early drop off that we were able to consolidate with DS’ bandschedule.

Hope for the Future
My college roommate and bestie is in Florida from MN. They rented a two bedroom beach house on the east coast of the state and we decided to make the 90ish minute trek to meet them. She and her husband have seven kids (three that are foster or adopted), and her SIL and her family are staying with them who have six kids, two of whom are adopted from foster care. It rained most of the afternoon, but eventually cleared and all of the kids had a blast together! Ms. 6, E, and DS all looked like pros on their boogie boards. Ms. 6 stayed in the water until well past dark. She just loved it and soaked it all up! H caught a sand flea. This is a new one to me, but he called it a crab and was very happy to have it around. He loves exploring the beach. We took a long walk down the shoreline. I cried to my bestie for the five seconds of conversation we managed together. She gets it. She has been in a place similar to us recently and two of her kids are headed to adoption shortly which she also debated. It’s hard. This wasn’t what they had planned for their lives. They got into fostering because they were initially a kinship placement for a distant relative. It felt good to be understood. And heard.Posted 22 hours ago

CPS
Another anon threatened to call CPS on me. I think there must be a genuine misunderstanding of what CPS does if someone is threatening to call the agency due to parenting challenges. We work closely with the ongoing unit through our health and human services department. CPS is housed in the same building as ongoing. They pretty much all know our business. I don’t keep secrets from professionals. I have called CPS on myself a couple of times over the years due to various things that have happened in our home (like when Baby went into the road a couple of years ago while he was still in foster care). Believe it or not, I do not play myself up as some sort of perfect foster parent or parent in general. If anything, we lay all of our cards out on the table because that’s the right thing to do. Is it embarrassing? Absolutely! Is everyone all up in our business? Yes! Baby is well fed and clothed. We personally drive him an hour (one way) to his weekly trauma-based OT appointment and participate in it with him. We participate in weekly in-home family therapy. We are meeting on a consultation basis with a solid therapist trained in attachment, and are on a waiting list to do play therapy (that will be months of waiting before we get in). I applied for another program to help with mental health. DH and I traveled weekly for four weeks this summer to complete the extensive neuropsych testing that Baby needed. We are also working with a psychiatrist who we have near weekly phone contact with in addition to the office visits. We are doing everything we know how to do and are still failing. Again, I am in no way asserting we are awesome parents who are meeting his needs. I am asserting that we are struggling and trying to make it all work. However, this is not a secret to the professionals we work with. Even NB’s ongoing worker is looped in. I am also saying that it is a near round-the-clock all hands on deck all the time job to care for him. There is no down time. We are on from the minute he wakes up until the minute he goes to bed, and after he goes to bed, we have to monitor him and are up (on average) 2x/night to care for him. Again, you can place the blame on the parents here, but our in-home therapist communicated to us that the number one predictor of success in these situations is education. She believes that due to our collective education (DH and I both hold masters degrees), and our willingness to seek out services and follow through on them, we will ultimately be successful with Baby. However, that does not negate that it is absolutely miserable and exhausting. The grind is every moment with no break. People cannot believe that kids can be so challenging, but research absolutely bears out that some kids are so negatively impacted by trauma that they ARE this challenging. It’s factually true and no amount of shaming and blaming the adoptive home can take that away. The research on the impact of drug addiction in utero is still ongoing. So, again, you can blame me, but I won’t own that. I’ll own my part in his attachment story, but that’s it. I will not own his exposure to drugs during pregnancy, his attachment issues due to a NICU stay and the involvement of his biological parents, and I will not own the fact that some people refuse to believe that a three year old can reek real havoc on an otherwise fairly functioning family. I am educated enough to know what I’m responsible for, and what I am not. Notice that I am not blaming the child. It’s not his fault either.Posted 2 days ago

Vacationing
I’m going to attempt to address some of the crazy angry anons that I received over the weekend. They were all immediately deleted, and there were a handful (maybe five), not hundreds, but a couple ofcommon themes.
One anon was “concerned” that I expected our children (who the anon referred to with curse words) to behave on our last minute vacation. Longtime readers know that we make the trip to Florida 2-3x/year at this point. There’s nothing new here. Typically we travel over spring break. Last summer we booked a last minute August vacation to Orlando. This summer we did the same. We also traveled down right after Christmas and stayed into the New Year this year which was very enjoyable. All of our children except for Baby are good travelers. E and H repeatedly ask to go on vacation and are anxious to hit the road. E in particular seeks adventure in the way of travel. Our big kids are also good travelers, even Ms. 6 who has had very limited exposure totraveling.
DH and I are also very much roadtrippers. We both have extensive experience in this area (him moreso than myself). Prior to us marrying, I packed up DD and DS solo and we tent camped from the Midwest to Denver and back (during Sturgis no less). We had a great time, went to Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, etc.
I think kids should travel if they can. They need to know that there is a big world out there. I have also been criticized online for having a large family. I believe, in part, this is due to the perception that kids in large families don’t get as much “stuff.” Like somehow our kids our missing out because they can’t travel to Europe like they would if they were part of a two kid family. Because, you know, all two kid families are traveling to Europe for their summer vacations. We basically have three options: 1. Not travel even though six of our kids are great at it and enjoyit.
2. Leave Baby at home while we travel. 3. Travel with Baby even though it is challenging for him (and us) and try to do what we can to alleviate what we know is difficult for him when we travel (I couldn’t tell you as it varies from day to day which is part of what makes parenting him so difficult). So far we have chosen option three. I don’t feel like option two is great due to attachment issues, and really if I were writing that we took a vacation and left Baby at home, all of these people that have an issue with our parenting, would be up in arms that we left our three year old out of our family vacation. I think the real issue is that people refuse to see that families like ours are STUCK in a completely challenging situation. There are NO good options, so you choose the BEST of the BAD options and do what you can to survive. And most of the time that’s what itis–survival.
We continue to travel–often last minute because that’s what often works the best with our schedules. We view this as the best option of often less than ideal circumstances.Posted 3 days ago

Seldom is FB a more safe space for me than here, but I posted this during our travels down. It may do a better job of explaining how I was feeling last night. For now, I shut down anons and I think most of the commenting here (I’m not super tech savvy). Baby isn’t going anywhere, but I do think it’s okay to ask these difficult questions and have honest conversation about these challenging issues. Otherwise we shame people into silence and that is not appropriate. Although my anons overnight sure seemed to think so. There are so many angles: work, marriage, the child that’s struggling, the other kids who are also struggling, our own selves as parents. I can’t stop working. I don’t want to lose my marriage. I don’t want my other kids to suffer. I want Baby to have all that he needs. I’m saying it’s difficult and there are no easy solutions and there are not enough (or any) resources. If all of the people that jumped on the judgement bandwagon would reach out and offer respite, that alone would probably be enough to improve these kids lives and families who are impacted by these issues (because rest assured we are definitely not the only ones facing these challenges). Here’s my FB post from the drive down: As a society, we like to see adoption as warm and fuzzy and the end result is a perfect kid in a perfect family. The reality is there are no perfect kids or families. DH and I are working hard to be what all of our kids need, but both of us feel like we have a long ways to go with our little guy. Truthfully, we are discouraged, and I feel sort of hopeless. Like it will never get better despite all of the interventions (trauma based OT, in-home family therapy, medication, etc.). Meanwhile, we have a high needs child that we could all use a break from, but there is no respite once foster care ends. We are currently disconnected from a church, community, etc. How do you make time for friends and community when it is non-stop appointments and behvaioral management? I don’t even know how to muster up the energy for outside relationships when there’s rarely time to connect with my spouse at the end of the day. We are still on the road. After more than four hours of non-stop talking and screaming yesterday, and then an unexpected bout with car vomit, 🤢 at 1am we decided to call it a day and pulled off south of Nashville to grab a hotel room so we could sleep for a few hours before hitting the road again (we usually drive straight through). Currently in Atlanta rush hour hopefully arriving our destination latetonight.
The bright spot? Staying overnight in TN, allowed us to have a very late lunch with a VERY dear friend. L and I met in 2001 when we traveled to Romania together. 🇷🇴 We were roommates the summer I unexpectedly brought DD home to the United States. We literally haven’t seen each other in six years! She’s a CPS worker now, and although she’s not a mother herself, she gets me and she gets my kids. She called her boss to see if she could go into work late so she could meet up with us. She happily grabbed the baby and fed him a bottle 🍼 while DH and I managed the (mostly controlled) chaos of bathroom breaks and getting lunch for the other five. She didn’t mind our interrupted conversation, and was so encouraging in simply being present with us. I appreciate her willingness to sit and be with me without judgement no matter how I’m feeling or what I’m thinking. It’s hard to believe we’ve known each nearly 20 years, and the baby I brought home in 2002 is now a high school graduate.👩🎓
Thanks for being you L and being willing to love me so authentically. It is appreciated more than you know. ❤️Posted 4 days ago

ON THE ROAD
We stayed at a Hilton last night for less than $100, and all of us fit. The room was huge-two queen beds, a pull out sofa, and we had them bring up a pack n play and then brought a little cot with us that we brought up to the room. I cannot believe how much space there was in it as we all slept comfortably. They also had free breakfast thismorning.
Now we are sitting in more traffic at least an hour north of Chattanooga. Because of course. Several accidents apparently. I was hoping to meet up with an old friend in Atlanta but she has to go to work and I think we are gonna miss her now due to delays. Blah, blah, blah. This drive is AWFUL! We are going to hit Atlanta at rushhour too. 👎🏻
DH rearranged the seats in the van this morning. He put Baby in the way back (he was behind the driver), and Ms. 6 offered to run interference. I didn’t say no to that. We haven’t even been on the road an hour, but so far so good. I’ll take it!Posted 6 days ago

FEELING
totally defeated (I think I’ve cried at least three times today and I am not typically a crier). We stopped south of Nashville and got a hotel room. It’s 1:30am, and only Baby is asleep (so thankful it’s him that’s asleep) because the transfer from car to hotel gives everyone a second wind. DH and I were just too exhausted physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to keep going. It’s still at least ten hours on the road tomorrow. Hoping to have at least five hours of sleep under my belt by then.Posted 6 days ago

We have been in the car over ten hours, and are less than six hours away from home. Indiana killed us with their wicked bad rain stormsand construction.
And Baby just threw up. A lot. All over. That was a long Walmart stop to clean up. Ick. Ick. Ick. Seriously contemplated going home. It would be quicker at this point, but we paid for the condo in full and it’s non-refundable so hopefully things get better?Posted 6 days ago

How come you only adopt white kids?Anonymous
Um, what?
We live in a primarily white and Latino community. I have literally had only one (emergency) placement of a child of color within my own county which is small and rural, and I have over a decade of fostering experience. I have fostered children of color in the big city about an hour away from me, but none of those children have ever been available for adoption. Some were reunified with a parent, and others went to arelative placement.
I didn’t realize I was under the magnifying glass for who I was adopting and obligated to explain those choices to the internet.Hmmmm.
