NEW MUSEUM BUILDING BY MAYEKAWA KUNIO|TOKYO … Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum’s current building was completed in September 1975. Its design is by Mayekawa Kunio Associates (currently, Mayekawa Associates, Architects & Engineers). MAYEKAWA Kunio, one of Japan’s great modern architects, placed emphasis on providing open spaces, lobbies, and restaurants when designing public buildings. ISAMU NOGUCHI: WAYS OF DISCOVERY|TOKYO METROPOLITAN … Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988)—one of the foremost artists of the 20th century. The son of a Japanese father and American mother, Noguchi constructed a unique sculptural philosophy while grappling with his identity as an artist caught between two cultures, East and West. Deeply influenced by the aesthetic vision of Constantin Brancusi, a sculptor whom he encountered in his twenties, Noguchi WALLS & BRIDGES ― TOUCHING THE WORLD, LIVING THE WORLD Featuring five artists—HIGASHI Katsukichi (1908-2007), MASUYAMA Tazuko (1917-2006), Silvia Minio-Paluello YASUDA (1934-2000), Zbyněk SEKAL (1923-1998), and Jonas Mekas (1922-2019). All were creators who, by the very passion they put into expression, transformed the barriers surrounding them into a “bridge” to new possibilities.
