YOUR LOYAL FOLLOWERS Let’s look at three examples of loyalty incentives that don’t make sense for a veterinary practice. 1. Buy 7 Bags of Dog Food and Get 1 Free. The margin on pet food is lower than on services. Pet supply stores in your area probably offer a similar free-food promotion, and you will have a hard time doing it better. AAHA UPDATES ‘COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS’ GUIDE The American Animal Hospital Association has released the latest version of its benchmarking guide “Compensation and Benefits,” a detailed look at pay and perks for all members of the veterinary practice team. THE EFFICIENT PRACTICE 1. Punctuality. Everyone needs to be punctual — in the door, on the floor and ready to work when the shift starts. However, by focusing on engaging employees and turning to them for suggestions on improving company value, I saw the lean thinking approach’s potential to turn around poor job satisfaction and burnout in the veterinary field. LEARN DRUG SECURITY BASICS Managing controlled substances can be a daunting task that usually falls squarely on a veterinary technician’s shoulders. Issues arise when a technician does not understand the regulations or when the hospital lacks good systems for preventing the illegal acquisition, diversion and use of controlled drugs. Federal, state and local governments regulate controlled substances. The U.S. VETERINARIANS SELL 74% OF PET MEDICATIONS E-commerce’s growing share of the pet medications market stands at 15%, but veterinarians maintain majority control and are fighting back with internet pharmacies of their own, according to a new report. CHAPTER 10: TALES FROM THE COVID-19 FRONT LINES “Now is the time to make lemonade out of the lemons we’ve beenhanded.”
WHAT NOW?
With little warning, the COVID-19 pandemic pummeled the veterinary industry and transformed patient care, client relations and staffing. Will we ever return to the “old normal,” or is more upheaval stillto come?

More communication__THE TRUE YOU
Spend time writing your online biography so that it communicates the essence of your personality and values. Pet owners look for a genuine connection when they search for a veterinarian. TEAM UP TO TACKLE PAIN Too many dogs and cats don’t receive needed relief. Hospital staff should use the power of observation and diagnostics to do what is best for the patient and to build client trust. DON’T CONFUSE THE ISSUE Shared decision-making between the veterinary team and pet owner promotes better patient outcomes. DON’T SHORTCHANGE YOURSELF Practice owners, just like their staff, deserve fair compensation. Revenue is key, of course, but you can increase it by regularly adjusting your fee schedules and eliminating giveaways. THE FORGOTTEN TEAM MEMBER Outnumbered and full of responsibility, practice managers aren’t immune to the personal struggles afflicting doctors and staff. Solutions are within reach. A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Leveraging technicians gives them a greater role in patient care and frees veterinarians to focus on active, rather than passive, revenuestreams.

Don’t try to sell every flea and tick preventive. Settle on a favorite and get to work educating your team and clients. IS IT TIME FOR A CHANGE? Core training isn’t just for the athletically inclined. Bring your teams together as often as possible to talk about retail products andclient messaging.
HOW DO YOU MEASURE UP? Client feedback is essential for improving a practice, especially in the purchase of pharmaceuticals and food. If a pet owner is disappointed and you don’t know why and can’t make amends, you might have lost a patient. More merchandising__columns
