THINGS TO DO IN SHINJUKU Tokyo’s busiest district, Shinjuku is the central hub where most of Tokyo’s train and bus lines meet. The area surrounding Shinjuku Station is a multitude of shops, department stores, and restaurants, where locals typically shop or dine out. OIWA INARI SHRINE AND THE BIG BAD BOSS OF VENGEFUL FEMALE The real Lady Oiwa lived 200 years prior to the play, and unlike her fictional counterpart, she was known to have upstanding character—a true ryosai kenbo (good wife, wise mother) that served as a model for many young women. The Tamiya clan did live in a stretch of land in Yotsuya, and in its place now stands Oiwa Inari Shrine. CHIBA ¥100,000 CORONAVIRUS PAYOUT: FORM POSTING & BANK Many of Chiba’s cities and towns are sending the forms for the 100,000 COVID-19 relief from the week of May 18th. Matsudo, Mobare, Nagareyama, Oamishirasato, and Yotsukaido also have downloadable forms on their website, which people who are in immediate need of a cash transfer can use to apply. Below is the detailed schedule per Chibamunicipality.
IYA VALLEY IN ONE DAY: FOREST MONORAIL, VINE BRIDGES Perhaps one of the most recognizable icons of Iya Valley, the peeing boy statue, known in Japanese as shōben kozō, stands at the edge of a cliff, seemingly unfazed by the possibility of falling off. Some accounts say that the statue was built because young HIKING TRIP: MT. TSUKUBA (MIYUKIGAHARA TRAIL) Height: Nantai Peak (877 m); Nyotai Peak (871 m) Difficulty: Absolute beginner to intermediate. The park consists mainly of large dog pens that guests can enter to see, touch, and play with dogs. Some areas, however, are for viewing only. A pink cat beckons guests to enter the Neko House. A smaller, more intimate area called “Neko House”provides
SAKURA REPORT: KAWAZU CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL Yellow and pink mix. From as early as mid-February, kawazu sakura can be seen blooming in different parts of Japan. Kawazu, the area in Shizuoka Prefecture from which the flower gets its name, is especially lovely during this time as the river banks are lined with cherry blossom trees as well as nanohana shrubs.. Perfectly Pleasant Stroll IS IT DIFFICULT TO MAKE FRIENDS IN JAPAN? But when people generalize and say that making friends with Japanese people is difficult, the argument seems to be anchored in the notion that friendship is based on nationality. I find that rather unsettling. And I’d like to think that people don’t think that way. But if look back at my experiences in Japan, I have noticed manyinstances
SHOW REVIEW: MANGEKYO TAIKO DRUM SHOW The first is an obvious pitfall; there’s a lot you take away when you remove dialogue. It’s the latter that I find disappointing; both shows I saw made use of anime/game EDM unsuccessfully, resulting in a somewhat contrived use of the genre and directing it towards the wrong audience. This is where Mangekyo stands out.HOME | TOKYO PAST 3
