I really wasn’t sure how my transition from iOS to Android was going to go, but luckily once you’ve got a game running the underlying OS really doesn’t make much difference. I do miss the bigger iPad screen for some games, but otherwise I’ve adapted quite well (though I did have a running start thanks to my stint with an iPod Touch before getting my iPad). For this outing I found a new scrolling shooter to add to my favorites list, I reacquainted myself with an old favorite from the SEGA Genesis days, and I spent more time than I should have with a game I already spent a lot of time playing on my iPad. And there were a few other games thrown into the mix as well.Enjoy!

It’s no secret that Tin Man Games is one of my favorite mobile developers. After all, they were the ones that most successfully brought one of my favorite childhood pastimes to the mobile screen – the gamebook adventure. I was somewhat saddened when they switched from their incredible electronic book format to the board game style of Warlock of Firetop Mountain (though don’t get me wrong, that looks like an incredible game), but now they’re back to their roots with Fighting Fantasy Classics, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic.Continue reading…

Welcome to my first roundup of 2018! Sorry I’m a bit late to the party (does nearly two months count as fashionable?), but life has a funny way of not letting you do what you want to sometimes. Anyway, I’ve shifted gears a bit, because honestly I was getting tired of things just flat out not listing my iPad as a supported device or not NOT listing it but the game really not working on it anyway. Plus, I got a new-ish Android phone for Christmas, and it actually plays a lot of those games I just mentioned in the last sentence. So, my first collection of summaries is actually about Android games, though if there is an iOS version available I will provide a link for that as well. Just remember, I played all of these games on an Android phone, not on my iPad 2.
Also, I decided to do something else that I’ve not done with a roundup before, or at least not with roundups on this site. Instead of just listing games I liked (though that will still probably be the majority of what shows up), I’m actually going to mention games that I didn’t care for so much either. You should be able to tell the difference pretty readily, but just in case I’ll conclude each summary with a “Play” or “Pass” designation. And here’s a slight spoiler: Homescapes, Fastlane and Into The Dead 2 deserve a couple of extra “plays” added on to the end of my verdict. I play each of them almost every single day, which hasn’t happened for a long time even with the games that do still run on my iPad 2. So, without further ado, let’s actually get to the reviews…Continue reading…

I grew up on adventure games, and while there seems to be a resurgence in popularity of the genre (disregarding the underground movement that argues they never went away), I still get really excited every time a new one pops up that isn’t filled with hidden object screens or scores of mini-games that are either mind numbing or frustratingly executed. Abi: A Robot’s Tale definitely has more of an old school feel to it, at least in terms of game play… up until roughly the last third of the game. I’m still rather intrigued by where this series might go – at least I hope it’s going to be a series – but I trust that future installments will steer away from where this one ended up. Keep on reading and all will soon become clear.Continue reading…

If you like time management games, you should give My Hospital a try. It has a thriving online community and developers that actually like to get feedback and implement changes based on user input. Now you can throw “fostering awareness of breast cancer symptoms and treatments” into the mix. Beginning November 16th, Cherrypick Games has entered into a partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation to bring awareness of this potentially fatal disease to its players, as well as giving those players a chance to help with the cause. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly clear what this partnership entails, but I’m sure you’ll find out if you play the game, andit’s free for iOS
and Android
devices, as well as for MacOS.

Welcome to the not really all new, once again renamed latest edition of my App Store roundup. When I first started this was a weekly (mostly) publication, and the games I covered generally came out in the week prior to my post. Then it finally got to the point where I was covering a mix of older and new games, so I dropped “New” from the title. Finally I even chopped off the date range, simply putting the date of the post in the title instead of the range that supposedly encompassed the games I was covering. Now I’ve decided to go with the simple moniker “Touch My App Store Roundup” because, quite frankly, I won’t always be talking about 10 different games. I thought maybe if I cut down on the quantity I could get the article out more often. However, there is no need to fret, because the quality won’t be compromised in any way. To this day, Into The Dead is still one of the best zombie infinite runners on the App Store. It had a “The Walking Dead” vibe to it, with plenty of atmosphere and visual panache to keep you perfectly on edge. There were multiple game modes, lots of things to unlock and companions to ease some of your undead disposal burden. While it’s just as entertaining now as when it was first released, PikPok has finally graced us with the one thing we’ve been missing – an actual sequel. Later this week PikPok will be releasing Into The Dead 2, and the only thing stopping me from begging them for a pre-release copy is the fact that I don’t currently own a device capable of running the game.Continue reading…

Once you start playing Toby: The Secret Mine you might think to yourself that it feels a bit like Limbo. Don’t worry, that’s to be expected. Even the developers admit the inspiration in the first line of their iTunes description. What makes a game like Toby worthwhile is that it stands out despite the similarities, not because of them. I’ve run into a few games that try to emulate these two visually, but so far I’d say they are best in class in terms of the game play style. The most important thing is that they are proof positive that a platformer doesn’t have to be all about shooting every bad guy or collecting coins and power ups.Continue reading…

So as luck would have it my “regular schedule” thing didn’t work out so well. On the plus side, at least it was less than four months between roundups unlike last time. Even better, almost everything is from this year, and most of the games actually came out in the last couple of months. Several of the games were fresh takes on beloved but stale genres, and a couple of them even managed to hook me in after I was about ready to remove them from my device. It’s getting harder and hard to find games that run for a decent length of time without crashing on my iPad 2, and one or two of these games are borderline in that regards, but you should be able to play any of them without too many frustrations even if you have that old of a device. Hope you enjoy the selection of games and find something that you didn’t know existed but are glad you discovered.Continue reading…

I’ve been a fan of G5 for a long time. I realize they don’t actually develop the games themselves, but their logo at the beginning of an adventure was usually a guarantee of a solid game play experience. No one is perfect, however, and for G5 it seems that Deep Town is one of their rough spots. The premise behind the game is intriguing enough that you’ll want to press through to the end, but how you get there is a big enough mess that it might not be worth it unless you are a huge fan of adventure games.Continue reading…
