< Previous Update | Next Update > TradeTheNews.com Weekly Market Update: China provides New Year’s stimulus; US airstrike against Iran Quds leader creates newuncertainties
Fri, 03 Jan 04:06 PM EST/09:06 PM GMTShare:
Equity markets roared into 2020 with US indices posting new all-time highs coming out of the holiday break. Investors appeared to remain focused on the expected signing of the ‘Phase 1’ US/China trade deal by mid-January, as well as modest optimism heading into earnings season. Markets also got some stimulus from China’s central bank, which delivered a 50 basis point cut in the Reserve Requirement Ratio on New Year’s Day. The US Treasury curve steepened to levels not seen since 2018, signaling increasing confidence in the global growth outlook heading into 2020. Markets hit a speed bump on Friday as safe haven flows picked up in the aftermath of President Trump’s decision to take out Iranian Commander Qassim Soleimani in Iraq on Thursday night. The move marked a significant escalation of Iranian tensions as senior officials in both Iraq and Iran vowed severe retaliation. Crude prices predictably shot higher but had a difficult time gaining traction above $64 in the WTI contract, despite bullish weekly inventory readings. Gold prices continued to break out and are now less than $20 below this summer’s multi-year highs. For the week, the S&P lost 0.2%, the DJIA slipped fractionally, and the Nasdaq edgedup 0.2%.
In corporate news this week, Tesla Q4 production numbers impressed, beating expectations and notching record deliveries, sending shares to more fresh highs. The FDA issued a limited ban on most fruit- and mint-flavored vaping products, as had been expected, but exempted menthol and tobacco varieties. Pacific Bioscience and Illumina nixed plans to combine, citing a burdensome regulatory approval process and continued uncertainty of the $1.2B merger outcome. Wesco and CD&R, dueling bidders for Ani ...Read more »
< Previous Update | Next Update > TTN November-December 2019 Outlook: The End of Uncertainty? Fri, 01 Nov 08:10 AM EST/01:10 PM GMTShare:
As the year draws to a close, some of the uncertainties that have weighed on the economy and markets have slowly made progress toward resolution. The UK withdrawal from the EU is now set to occur at the end of January, while the US and China are preparing to sign off the first phase of a new trade treaty – both positive developments. Yet uncertainties remain. The UK will go to new elections in December on the hopes that they can once and for all decide if they are a part of Europe or not. Meanwhile, Europe could also be the loser in the uneasy US/China trade truce, as the White House contemplates squeezing Europe with tariffs. New tariffs against China also remain a possibility next month as Beijing and Washington move into the second phase of trade talks. And the clash in Washington over the impeachment inquiry will come to a head before year end as the Democrats have gone all in on a long shot effort to remove President Trump from office. Clarity and final outcomes on these long pending issues could be a boon for markets that have suffered under a mountain of uncertainty for the last couple of years. NOVEMBER 1: US PAYROLLS & UNEMPLOYMENT The US economy remains the bright spot in the developed world and that strength has been based on the resilience of the jobs market, which has in turn fueled the strong consumer and retail sales. With manufacturing in a lull, the employment data is more important than ever as a pillar for sustaining economic growth. Payroll growth has been averaging about 150K new jobs a month this year while unemployment has continued to plumb new lows, reaching 3.5% in theSeptember data. ...
