Born on 9th June 1781 near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Stephenson came from humble beginnings, learning to read and write at 18 years of age. He worked as and engineman and ‘brakesman’ at local pits, and when he married in 1801, made shoes and clocks to supplement his income. Stephensonprogressed

As such, it represents an important transitional phase in tramway development between the limited capacity and relatively low-powered horse tramway era and the much greater capacity and increased tractive power of the large bogie tramcars that emerged during the electric tramway era. It was built to an 1894 design by the Midland Railway Carriage and Wagon Company which, as its name suggest, is chiefly known for its railway products, though it was also the first commercial builder of electric tramcars in Britain. It is the sole survivor of an iconic class LEEDS CITY TRANSPORT NO. 600 The story of Leeds 600 is an interesting saga of two rather unusual attempts in different parts of the country to extend the life of Britain’s first generation tramways at a time when many were being replaced by either motor buses or trolley buses. The first of theseattempts, in

As previously reported, the next restoration project for the workshop at Crich Tramway Village is Blackpool Brush Railcoach 298, which now needs to be brought back to the Crich Tramway Workshop from our store, ready to fit the new underframe due to be received from The Ffestiniog and Welsh HighlandRailways.

BLACKPOOL 298 RESTORATION UP-DATE As previously reported, the next restoration project for the workshop at Crich Tramway Village is the Blackpool Brush Railcoach 298. You may remember agreement was reached between the Tramway Museum Society (TMS), the Tramcar Sponsorship Organisation( TSO) and the Blackpool Railcoach Fund (BRF) to restore 298 back to its original 1937 “as delivered” condition. BLACKPOOL 298 RESTORATION UP-DATE As previously reported, the next restoration project for the workshop at Crich Tramway Village is the Blackpool Brush Railcoach 298. You may remember agreement was reached between the Tramway Museum Society (TMS), the Tramcar Sponsorship Organisation( TSO) and the Blackpool Railcoach Fund (BRF) to restore 298 back to its original 1937 “as delivered” condition. BLACKPOOL CORPORATION NO. 59 AKA Blackpool 59 is a unique tramcar. It was built to an 1894 design by the Midland Railway Carriage and Wagon Company which, as its name suggest, is chiefly known for its railway products, though it was also the first commercial builder of electric tramcars in Britain. It is the sole survivor of an iconic class SIGNALS MUSIC FESTIVAL SIGNALS one-day festival takes place in our unique and intriguing venue set deep in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside. Few HISTORY REDISCOVERED One of the standout items that we came across, was a note book from 1904, used as a Staff register. The register lists the names of the men working in 1904, when the Northampton Corporation Tramways opened, and their occupations. Period Village Scene. Step back in time along our recreated period street where you won’t have to wait long for the rumble of a vintage tram. Many of the buildings along the street have been rescued from towns and cities across the UK, such as the Derby Assembly Rooms façade which came to Crich after a tragic fire. The Red Lion Pub and PRAGUE NO. 180 (ORIGINALLY 266) Although tramcars can fairly claim to have changed the course of history as they contributed to the transformation of predominantly agricultural countries into modern industrialised nations, few individual tramcars have entered the history books. One rare exception is Prague 180 (originally numbered as 266), which hit the headlines in August 1968 while en route from BERLIN TRAMWAYS (BVB) NO. 223 006-4 The vehicle itself is not without historical interest, however. It is of a type known as a Rekowagen which was built in 1969 for operation on the then extensive East Berlin tramway, where it was designed to pull two trailers, though other trams in this class are also known to LEEDS CITY TRANSPORT NO. 600 The story of Leeds 600 is an interesting saga of two rather unusual attempts in different parts of the country to extend the life of Britain’s first generation tramways at a time when many were being replaced by either motor buses or trolley buses.
