Gunnera Passage Facts. Gunnera manicata was named after a Norwegian botanist and bishop, Johann Ernst Gunnerus. The leaves can grow up to 2.5m across. The stems can grow up to 5m in height. TREBAH'S HERITAGE & HISTORY The Backhouses. Charles’ daughter Juliet married Edmund Backhouse MP and inherited Trebah on her father's death in 1876. The ensuing 30 years of Backhouse ownership was a golden era for Trebah during which it acquired a huge collection of exotic plants and trees from all overthe world.

Height 11.00m. Girth 1.60m. This slow growing tree was introduced in 1861 and is rare and confined to collections and a few gardens in the South and South West of England. It is known as the Japanese Yew or the Buddhist Yew and is native to Japan and Southern China. This exotic Asiatic conifer has needle-like leaves in spirals on uprightbranches.
HYDRANGEA VALLEY
Two acres of Hydrangeas border the banks of Mallard Pond and are mirrored in its tranquil water. Most common are 'Mop-head' Hydrangea macrophylla and their vibrant 'Oxford and Cambridge' blue colouring is due to Trebah's rich acid soil. The hydrangeas at Trebah were planted in the 1950s and the cut blooms were sent to Covent Garden flower market to raise income for the garden.HIMALAYACALAMUS

Gunnera Passage Facts. Gunnera manicata was named after a Norwegian botanist and bishop, Johann Ernst Gunnerus. The leaves can grow up to 2.5m across. The stems can grow up to 5m in height. TREBAH'S HERITAGE & HISTORY The Backhouses. Charles’ daughter Juliet married Edmund Backhouse MP and inherited Trebah on her father's death in 1876. The ensuing 30 years of Backhouse ownership was a golden era for Trebah during which it acquired a huge collection of exotic plants and trees from all overthe world.
FUN CHILDRENS ACTIVITIES IN CORNWALL All our children's play areas are open again Adventure Play Areas. Tarzan's Camp is a fantastic wooden play area with climbing ropes, a slide, monkey bars and a fireman's pole; all enclosed within a tree canopy, designed for the over 5s.. Fort Stuart is a smaller wooden fort for under 5s. As a space to have lots of fun, it includes a slide and sit on rocking horses and is in a separate, secure TRAVEL GROUPS & TOUR OPERATORS Trebah welcomes groups from all over the world to the Garden. We are open for pre-booked groups from 9am to 12 noon, Saturday to Wednesday. (We are now closed on Thursdays and Fridays). There is a reduced rate for pre-booked groups of 12 or more, when payment is made en bloc on arrival or in advance. PHYLLOSTACHYS
Phyllostachys edulis. Can also be named Phyllostachys pubescens. Introduced by monks from China to Japan. It is the tallest growing and largest caned bamboo in Britain, up to 29cm in circumference and growing up to 30cm a day at Trebah. In the Far East it is used for furniture making and drainage.
