LOVE LETTER TO BLACK WOMEN 1. This is a love letter to Black women. I have never loved anyone quite as hard as I have loved you. This is not to say that I have not loved others well or loved them deeply, because I have. But loving you is hardness, requiring the density of commitment fortified by anenamel of truth.

In 2008, before that historic election, if anyone had told me America wan’t ready for a Black man to lead the country, I would have dismissed them as racist. Now, I’m saying the same thing, for a different reason. When most people say “America isn’t ready IS THE PHRASE “I DON’T NEED A MAN” REALLY THAT TERRIBLE It’s true that no man (or woman) is an island. I do believe men are valuable to our society. “I don’t need a man” is not only a declaration of refusal, it’s a gender-specific one. No one likes rejection, and an outright blanket statement like that takes men out of the running before they hit the starting block. Last week, I joined the trolletariat for a “worthy” cause that had me writing umpteen comments on Facebook about natural hair. I won’t rehash the argument–I’m all kinked out. Suffice it to say that wifey changed her hair and boy, did her husband notice, which somewhatsurprised me.

The other day, I read an article by Trulia via The Atlantic that listed Detroit as #4 on the list of national most affordable housing markets. “BLACK WOMEN ONLY WANT THUGS” IS A LOAD OF CRAP When you’re busy loving the people who have always supported you, you don’t have time to worry about people you don’t even want. Ultimately, the phrase “Black women only want thugs” is meant as a disdainful write-off of Black women. It stems from a hurt place, from the very real pain of rejection.TRULY TAFAKARI
Lovecraft Country Is a Portal, Not a Landing Place. d. tafakari October 27, 2020. October 27, 2020. When Hippolyta Freeman flew haphazardly through a portal in the wall of a remote observatory, the act gave me a metaphor about Lovecraft Country itself that I didn’t grasp until after the finale. life. WHY I AM NOT TEACHING MY DAUGHTER TO BE A “GOOD GIRL Why I Am Not Teaching My Daughter to Be a “Good Girl”. All my life, I’ve been the “good girl.”. That’s not to say I’m perfect or I’ve never done anything foul in my life. Being a “good girl” has more to do with the conventions you follow and theperceptions you

My Baby’s Daddy (an Eddie Griffin movie so WHAT I MISS BY NOT WATCHING BLACK WOMEN ON REALITY TV What I Miss By Not Watching Black Women on Reality TV. I don’t watch much reality TV. Or, if I were being truthful, I’d say I don’t think I watch the kind of reality TV many other Black women watch. I’ve never seen an episode of Basketball Wives, Love and Hip-Hop, or Real Housewives of Atlanta. When the women in my social media WHY I REFUSE TO APOLOGIZE FOR MY BLACK GIRL ATTITUDE Black girl attitude is a gumbo of come correct stirred with fresh oh, no you didn’t and a dash of let me tell you something; we will make you eat your words before long. In a world where we are silenced and that silence is assumed to be complicity, a raised voice is a rally cry. Sucking teeth is a warning shot. AMERICA WAS NEVER READY FOR A BLACK PRESIDENT America had a Black President for eight glorious years. A whole Black President. In 2008, before that historic election, if anyone had told me America wan’t ready for a Black man to lead the country, I would have dismissed them as racist. Now, I’m saying the same thing, for a different reason. When most people say “America isn’t ready “RACIALLY CHARGED” AND OTHER STUPID EUPHEMISMS FOR “RACIST It might be true but it’s insensitive to say so. Calling a racist statement “racially insensitive” leaves room for racism to be misconstrued as simply “not nice.”. It’s not just that racists are mean, it’s that they’re ignorant enough to actually believe what they say is true. And hateful enough to THAT TIME I ATTENDED A BLACK TEA PARTY SERVED BY ALL WHITE Well, I recently found myself in a similar situation. I never thought I’d ever be at a tea where a team of all White women served a room of Black women. Last Saturday, my daughter and I got gussied up to attend a mother-daughter tea at a church. I drink tea, but I’d never been to an actual pinkie-in-the-air tea party that didn’t involve 6 REASONS BEING A “LOW-MAINTENANCE WOMAN” IS OVERRATED Ever since I knew there was a “good” kind of girl to be, I aimed to be that. I eventually realized that was a futile endeavor. I’ve been working to unlearn the way I used to mentally pit myself againstother women.
WHY THIS CHRISTIAN DOESN’T WATCH TYLER PERRY FILMS Tyler Perry is a frustrating topic for me, one that I avoid in churches as much as in academic circles. My husband once outed me as a Perry non-supporter to a church lady and the woman looked aghast. Spike Lee pans and pooh-poohs Perry’s movies as “coonery and*

I lost all my edges last December. Admittedly, I can tell you this because my edges slowly grew back in over the spring, filling in the patchy spaces around my hairline like the new grass poking up green across my lawn. Writing this is not a brave act. If it were, maybe I could have done it last January when everything was still dead. I am just bold enough to shrug off some strictures of feminine appeal, while acknowledging my failure to live up to others still makes me self-conscious. I imagine readers glancing at a recent photo on my Facebook page to see if…Continue Reading
