Eventually, Dr. Ahn became the Director of the University of California Martial Arts Program (UCMAP) in 2006, and also the Head Coach of UC Berkeley’s Taekwondo Team. Sensei Hidetaka Abe. Sensei Hidetaka Abe has been studying martial arts since he was 13 years old, and is a 7th-degree black belt in Karate and a 2nd-degree black belt in Judo. He studied under Wado Karate founder and Grand Master Hironori Otsuka at Meiji University in Tokyo and was the co-captain of the 1965 All Japan CollegiateChampionship team.

To coincide with the 50th Anniversary of UCMAP, we are proud to present a new, more dynamic website. The responsive site is designed to work well with a wider range of devices, to be easier for MSOs and UCMAP editors to maintain, and to have greater interactivity. THE FOUNDER OF UC MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM. A son of a lawyer, Kyung-Ho (Ken) Min was born in 1935 and grew up in Onchun, North Korea. Today, he is an icon in his homeland. He began his Martial Arts career in Judo, training throughout junior high school and high school. Sifu Bryant Fong began as an assistant instructor to Sifu Anthony Chan when the Cal Wushu Club was founded in 1981. Although the club dissolved in 1983 due to lack of membership, it reformed in 1989, at which time Sifu Fong became head instructor and has been instructingever since.

Dr. Jon Bertsch is a 5th dan judoka and International Level Coach with USA Judo, he has been practicing judo for over 40 years. He has been involved with the UC Berkeley judo club since 1985. A student of the Cal Taiji club since 1991, Sifu William Dere began teaching Taijiquan at UCMAP in 1997. He has had over 40 years of martial arts training and practice in a variety of Chinese martialarts.
YOUTH PROGRAM & SUMMER CAMPS All martial arts classes require a uniform. Uniforms are $30 and can be purchased the first day of camp. Martial Arts campers will have Judo, Taekwondo, or Yongmudo training each day. Taekwondo sparring will be available, but only for advanced Taekwondo students Campers will also have after-program activities, such as: drawing, crafts, reading, hula hoop, jump rope, homework, watching MartialDR. The founding director Dr. Min was searching for his successor for over 10 years and he finally found one in 2003. Dr. Russell Ahn joined the UC Martial Arts Program as Associate Director along with his full-time faculty position in the physical education program.SIFU BRYANT FONG
Sifu Bryant Fong began as an assistant instructor to Sifu Anthony Chan when the Cal Wushu Club was founded in 1981. Although the club dissolved in 1983 due to lack of membership, it reformed in 1989, at which time Sifu Fong became head instructor and has been instructingever since.

Sensei Hidetaka Abe has been studying martial arts since he was 13 years old, and is a 7th-degree black belt in Karate and a 2nd-degreeblack belt in Judo.

UCMAP EVENT CALENDAR Since 1969, the UC Martial Arts Program (UCMAP) has trained thousands of Berkeley students, faculty, staff & community members in martial arts and self-defense. ABOUT THE UC MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM Top-flight university, top-flight martial arts program. That was the vision of Dr. Ken Min, who started the first major university-based martial arts program in the nation in 1969, and then went on to lead the movement to introduce taekwondo as an Olympic sport. KARATE – UCMAP – UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM Karate-do means “the way of the empty hand.” Of ancient origin, it is practiced throughout the world in many different styles. The Japanese style studied at Cal TAEKWONDO – UCMAP – UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA MARTIAL ARTS Taekwondo, “the way of foot and fist,” is based on ancient Korean methods of self-defense. It emphasizes flexibility and kicking techniques, but hand techniques are also widely employed. TAIJI – UCMAP – UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM Taiji (also referred to as Taijiquan) is an internal martial art founded about 300 years ago in China. It is called an “internal” martial art because its training focuses on relaxation, alignment, and energy cultivation instead of strength training and athleticconditioning.
