But by writing down a few key details each day, you can be a big help as your child’s doctor is fine-tuning the medication. Motor planning is a skill that allows us to remember and perform steps to make a movement happen. We use motor planning for all physical activities. Refuses to go to school or do schoolwork. Avoids social situations with peers. Refuses to speak to peers or strangers in stores, restaurants, etc. Becomes emotional or angry when separating from family or loved ones. NEW MATH: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS Base ten. Base ten is a strategy to solve addition and subtraction problems by using a table divided into hundreds, tens, and ones. You’ll probably see the term “regrouping” used for this method. Each number goes into the chart according to its place value. For example, 43 would mean 4 tens and 3 ones. WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING? Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a way of thinking about teaching and learning that helps give all students an equal opportunity to succeed. This approach offers flexibility in the ways students access material, engage with it and show what they know. Developing lesson plans this way helps all kids, but it may be especially helpful for WHY OLDER KIDS STILL HAVE TANTRUMS Tantrums may be a sign that older kids are having a hard time in certain areas. Their challenges may be with learning, behavior, or both. When older kids have frequent tantrums, trouble managing emotions is often the cause. They may have trouble with self-control and, as a result, have a hard time calming down when they’re upset. KINDERGARTEN READINESS CHECKLIST Reading readiness skills. Enjoy listening to stories. Know how to find the first page of a book and which way to flip the pages. Recognize familiar logos and signs, like stop signs. Recite the alphabet and identify most of the letters. Recognize and try to write their own WHY KIDS STRUGGLE WITH ORGANIZATION SKILLS Stress, anxiety, and trauma can also play a role. But as kids get older, the main cause of organization problems is trouble with executive function. This group of mental skills allows us to organize, plan, focus, and prioritize. Not all kids develop at the same rate, especially young kids. But there are typical ages when kids are able to sit still for certain amounts of time: 3-year-olds: 5–10 minutes. 5-year-olds: 15 minutes. 7-year-olds: 25 minutes. 10-year-olds: 40 minutes. There are sights, smells, and sounds at home that make it hard to focus on schoolwork. 3. Internal distractions. Many kids are feeling sad or anxious because of the pandemic. They may miss seeing friends or attending events. KINDERGARTEN DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES: AGE 5 Most 5-year-olds have the language skills to: Use words to argue and try to reason with people ( because is a commonly used word) Use most plurals and pronouns. Trouble passing information from neuron to neuron can affect attention. It can impact motivation, too. It also helps explain other ADHD symptoms like being restless and impulsive. Medication can reduce ADHD symptoms. It does this by helping neurons pass along messages. It can make neurotransmission more efficient in WHAT IS PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS? Phonological awareness is the foundation for reading. It lets people recognize and work with the sounds of spoken language. That includes: Preschools usually include this type of language play, songs, rhymes, and stories in their daily activities. Eventually, kids start to come up with rhymes on their own. NUMBER REVERSAL IN KIDS Lots of young kids write numbers backwards. (Teachers may call it reversal.) In fact, it’s developmentally appropriate for kids under 7. But when kids are still reversing numbers after age 7, they may need extra help learning to write them correctly.
