Teachers want to do right by their students. They want their work to matter, but they also want to feel valued and respected. Right now, more than ever, teachers are exhausted and overwhelmed. WE’RE KILLING THE LOVE OF READING, BUT HERE'S AN EASY FIX We had six student-only class discussions for The Things They Carried and I listened in proudly as new leaders emerged. The questions and discussions improved with practice, but even the least impressive class periods were still better than what we had been doing, because I had proof the students were doing the collaborating, the analyzing, the thinking.
HOW I FOUND FREEDOM IN A TRADITIONAL GRADING SYSTEM I loved the idea of purposeful feedback without scores, of a points-less class, of decreased stress and increased learning, but it took a few years to figure out how I could actually make it work; the nuts and bolts of it rather than simply the philosophy of it all. I get more time to think, meet with students, say good morning to my fellow teachers, complete important tasks, and relax before the bell. Escaping the copy room helps, but this tip is entirely different, free, and saves valuable time whenever I type. After hearing about it from my teacher-friendBOOK MARISA

Multiply this by 3 pages in an average essay and that’s 600 pages to more-than-read, after school, after planning, after emails and calls. TIPS FROM STUDENTS: TEAMWORK, NOT GROUP WORK I reminded students the experience itself was the learning and the goal, not the product. Before class we would revisit our purpose and sometimes shared tips, questions, epiphanies by group regarding the making of the video or how to work effectively; their work goal and teamwork goal. An hour in, and then with 30 minutes left, I’d offer MY RESPONSE TO A FORMER STUDENT’S EMAIL, 7 DAYS INTO 2020 I couldn’t sleep so I turned on The West Wing and checked my phone.
