THE URBAN HOMESTEAD
7000. Pounds of Food on 1/10th Acre in Pasadena, CA. “Progress starts with envisioning a new (yet old) lifestyle with the home as central to all aspects of life—work and leisure, food and energy. So, real progress means bringing the economy, beginning with the food economy, home again. “ Jules Dervaes, Founder (1947-2016) ABOUT THE URBAN HOMESTEAD PROJECT About the Urban Homestead project – The Urban Homestead. In 1985 we bought a run-down circa 1917 craftsman-style house in the metropolis of Pasadena (the 7th largest city in Los Angeles County) which is just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles and is located between the intersection of 134 and 210 freeways 30 yards from our home. RAISING QUAIL. The Cortunix quail have fit nicely into the homestead. They don’t require much space and eat considerably less than chickens and ducks. They need about 2 pounds of food to lay a pound of eggs while a chicken needs 3 pounds of food to lay a pound of eggs. I was quite surprised with the cute sounds they make – sorta like a RABBITS AND CHICKENS TOGETHER But putting baby chickens with a full grown bunny is fine. IT IS TRULY THE ONLY EFFECTIVE PROTEST, ONE THAT CAN—AND WILL- OVERTURN THE CORPORATE POWERS THAT BE. BY THE PROCESS OF DIRECTLY WORKING IN HARMONY WITH NATURE, WE DO THE ONE THING MOST ESSENTIAL TO CHANGE THE WORLD — WE CHANGE OURSELVES.” JULES DERVAES, FOUNDER (1947-2016)_MODERN PIONEERS
Our highly productive Urban Homestead project is now widely considered a successful one-of-a-kind model for sustainable agriculture and living in an urban environment. Our family home, the Urban Homestead, has been featured on thousands of blogs, dozens of TV shows (CNN, National Geographic & Sundance Channel , CBS News, ABC Nightline, Oprah and many more) and hundreds of print articles, including, LA Times, NY Times, Times of India, and Faz – just to name a few. Since 2001, our blog “Little Homestead in the City ,” has shared first-hand stories of our family’s struggles and joys, defeats and successes on our homesteading journey. We hope that by documenting our personal experiences we can offer encouragement to those who are striving to live a simpler, more self-sufficient lifestyle and create a new model for urban living.7000
