THE ENGINEROOMS & FIREROOMS The firerooms aboard the KIDD provided the super-heated steam necessary to generate power and propulsion for the ship. The power plant aboard the KIDD is made up of four boilers which could generate 650 psi (pounds per square inch) of super-heated steam at 850° Fahrenheit. These boilers fed the steam into two General Electric geared turbines which could produce 30,000 HP (horse power) eachMUSEUM STORE

This passageway contains the eight staterooms where the KIDD’s officers lived, two or three to a compartment, depending upon seniority. Politely called “staterooms,” these cabins functioned as sleeping quarters, lounges, and offices. THE OFFICER'S WARDROOM The open hatch just forward of the breakwater on the starboard side leads to the Wardroom. The twenty officers ate meals in two shifts. The Wardroom mess was financed by contributions from each officer. Their meals were cooked separately from the enlisted men by the officer’s cook in the Wardroom pantry. Prior to World War II, the Wardroom had an atmosphere similar to a gentleman’s club OFFICER'S STATEROOMS Aft of the CPO’s quarters and head is Officer’s Country. This passageway contains the eight staterooms where the KIDD’s officers lived, two or three to a compartment, depending upon seniority. Politely called “staterooms,” these cabins functioned as sleeping quarters, lounges, and offices. Based on appearances, the officers had much better living arrangements than the men one deck THE PILOTHOUSE, THE BRIDGE, THE CAPTAIN'S SEA CABIN, AND The Pilothouse is located on the Bridge level directly above Radio Central and the Chartroom. The central portion of the pilothouse is dominated by the base of the Mk-37 Gun Director which is located directly overhead. The whole base turned as well as the unit above, much like the base of the 5-inch guns located in the ammunition handling rooms. Main Sonar Control is located in the aft portion THE EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR The starboard messdeck passageway contains sonar equipment that was added during the late 1950s to boost the range and power of the post-war SQS-4 sonar. This is one of the few areas aboard ship—like the post-war Mk-25 fire control radar equipment located in the old Stewards Berthing—that is not consistent with the KIDD’s target restoration date of August, 1945. The compartment aft of THE QUARTERDECK & THE 5"/38-CAL. GUNS As you step aboard the ship, you will find yourself on the fantail. The fantail is the back or rear of a ship. The quarter deck is the area of the ship where the gangway comes aboard and where the ship’s watch is posted. The watch refers to the group of men actually on duty at any given time. The quarter deck watch is the sailor whose duty station is to stand guard at the gangway and control "THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS" The Cold War is one of the most difficult eras of the KIDD's history on which to obtain information. There are several reasons for this. Unlike the battles of World War II and Korea, the KIDD often made peaceful cruises, showing the flag in foreign ports.
