A bustling and booming river town along the Mississippi River, it’s 20 years after Mississippi joining the union and 20 years before the Civil War. 1840 along the Mississippi river is reminiscent of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. If you’re familiar with these tales, it is easier to imagine LONG-TRACK TORNADOES: HISTORICAL CLUES ABOUT INTENSITY I live about 20 miles west of Huntsville, Alabama, and I can attest to the fact that long-track, violent tornadoes are quite common here. Research has found that supercell tornadoes generally require LCLs below 1,500 meters. Strong tornadoes are more common with LCLs below 1,000 meters, and probably more in the 600 to 800 meter zone or lower. Tornadoes have been in short supply to start off the year. The ones that have occurred have already been impactful, with both January and February containing killer tornadoes. The “Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974” occurred across portions of the Midwest, Lower Mississippi Valley, and Southeast. The “Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974” occurred across portions of the Midwest, Lower Mississippi Valley, and Southeast. In what was the worst tornado outbreak of the 20 th century, there were 148 tornadoes over the course of just 18 hours, over half of which were classified as significant/strong at F2 strength or higher..
