If you want to write something in Norse runes, you have probably discovered that the task is rather challenging. This guide will help you through all the necessary steps. To begin, one has to look into how it works, and then figure out what kind of inscription is needed, since each type of converting into runes requires a separate approach. ELDER FUTHARK: INNER STRUCTURE All this shows that the creator of the Elder Futhark had deep insights into the phonological structure of the language for which he designed this form of writing. It is astonishing how elaborate is the inner code of the runic sequence. Whether or not the ancient rune-masters realized the above phonological peculiarities is not clear, but the VIKING SHIELD: CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROUND SHIELD USED BY Viking Shield Construction. The board of a shield was flat. It consisted of seven to eight planks, which were 8 to 10mm thick in the center and 5 to 6mm thick towards the edges. The planks were usually made from fir, alder or poplar wood. These timbers are light and notvery dense.

WRITE IN RUNES
In my previous post on How to Translate Into Runes Correctly I wrote that no such thing as a correct representation of an English or Old Norse text in Norse runes can be achieved in practice. I know it sounds quite disappointing. Let’s consider what can be done about that. The practical advice I gave at the end of my text was to find a fragment of an existing Viking Age Younger Futhark MAGIC RUNES: ELDER FUTHARK RUNES WITH SUPERNATURAL POWER These magic runes appear only on bracteates. Their use seems to be connected with the calling of supernatural forces. Another word that is possibly formulaic is ota: This word is etymologically related with ON ótti, ‘fear.’. The inscription on the two bracteates found in a grave in Donaueschingen (Schwarzwald, Germany) reads: alu ota. HARROGATE OR VALE OF YORK HOARD: A VIKING TREASURE FIND Vale of York or Harrogate Hoard. In 2007 a father and son metal detecting team found a major Viking hoard near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The trove of coins and jewelry, which dates back to the 10th century, was the largest find of such type in Britain since the Cuerdale hoard was discovered in Lancashire in 1840. MAXIMUS: THE END OF ROMAN BRITAIN Maximus: The End of Roman Britain. The power of Romans in Britain first weakened early in the 4th century. The main reason was economic crisis. Moreover, along the usual incursions of Scots and Picts, fierce attacks by Saxons, Attacotti, and Franks worsened the situation. This blog is on Vikings and for Vikings. Warriors and traders from Nordic countries reached as far as North America, leaving lasting marks of their presence everywhere. In battle, Vikings feared nothing, eager to join Odin in his hall. They knew that valkyries chose who would die and become one of the einherjar in Valhalla. HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE VIKING ANCESTRY Can we know if our ancestors were Vikings? The short answer is yes, we can. DNA testing may trace Viking background in our genetic makeup. However, Nordic ancestry cannot be proven or disproven in all cases. A few years ago, when I first got interested in genetic genealogy, I thought that there might be some sort of Norse gene that all Vikings transmitted to all their descendants as a heritage. So you are either positive or negative for it. However, it’s not that simple. This tutorial will explain it all about genes and genetic testing for those who’d like to find out if they have Viking roots.42 comments
SOLAR ECLIPSE IN NORSE MYTHOLOGY In NORSE MYTHOLOGY Sun is a goddess named Sól. She rides a chariot created by gods to illuminate the nine worlds from the burning embers that come out of Muspelheim, the world of fire. Two horses named Early Awake and Very Quick draw the sun’s chariot. Giant wolf, of the species of monsters known as wargs, whose name is Treachery, is constantly chasing Sun’s chariot.4 comments
NORSE RUNES DO NOT CONVEY WHOLE WORDS For years, I have been receiving questions like ‘What is the rune for Joy?’ or ‘What is the rune for Happiness?’. The point is, Norse runes aren’t ideograms. Normally, they do not stand for abstract notions like ‘happiness’ or ‘joy’. Neither are they logograms, that is, they do not stand for all kinds of words like ‘go,’ ‘bird,’ or ‘angry’, unlike Japanese kanji or ChineseHan characters.

RUNIC INSCRIPTION ON THE STARAYA LADOGA STICKRecently I blogged
about the Younger Futhark runes as a writing system, emphasizing insufficiency of only 16 runic symbols for 21 consonants and 38 vowels of the Old Norse language between the 9th and 12th centuries. The 16 runes of the Younger Futhark are about three times less than one would expect. Anglo-Saxons invented additional runes for the standard Elder Futhark set of 24 runes when the language changed and additional phonemes emerged. Scandinavians did to the contrary. It is not clearwhy.

EVERYONE’S SOMEONE AT HOME About two years ago I received a request to write with runes a quote in Old Norse. This happens time and again since people find difficulty in substituting letters of the standard Old Norse orthography for the Younger Futhark runes. The request was for a 6 line stanza from Hávamál (Sayings of the High One):10 comments
CAN I WRITE IN OLD NORSE WITH RUNES? People tend to believe that there is nothing more easy and natural than to write in Old Norse with runes. In reality it’s quite the opposite. The language that we know as Old Norse is the language of the sagas of Icelanders, which were written down in the 13th century. Strictly speaking, this language is classical Old Icelandic. In reality, Old Norse was constituted by dialects that existed at various places during several centuries.20 comments
