VISION ZERO NETWORK
The focus on safe speeds extends beyond the traditional approach of influencing individual behavior. The Vision Zero Network encourages communities to focus upstream – more on policies and the built environment that influences behavior – in their work. Portland’s multi-pronged approach to taming speed is a model for other VisionZero cities.
WHAT IS VISION ZERO?NATIONAL PRIORITIES
The Vision Zero Network offers the following recommendations – along with our enthusiastic support and assistance -- to the incoming Administration to ensure safe mobility for all: 2. Align Federal Funding with Vision Zero. Tie Federal funding to explicit safety goals and outcomes, as well as VMT reduction. VISION, STRATEGIES, ACTION: GUIDELINES FOR AN EFFECTIVE A hallmark of Vision Zero in the U.S. is the creation of an Action Plan to lay out the roadmap for the strategies, roles, and responsibilities that will move your community from vision to action and help achieve the goal of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries. VISION ZERO CORE ELEMENTS The Core Elements for Vision Zero Communities emphasize the following four focus areas: Leadership and Commitment;Equity and Engagement; Safe Roadways and Safe Speeds; and a Data-Driven Approach, Transparency, and Accountability. And a summary document, developed in partnership with the Institute of Transportation Engineers, can befound here

In our webinar, Meaningful Community Engagement to Advance Vision Zero, we learn from leaders in the field VISION ZERO, EQUITY & LAW ENFORCEMENT In the wake of appalling violence in Minnesota, Louisiana, and Texas during the past few weeks and swelling racial tensions nationwide, a spotlight is shining on systemic inequities in our nation’s law enforcement system. These tragedies are influencing our thinking across the country. Personally, I am thinking differently about Vision Zero. Not only as it relates to law enforcement, but HOW DOES VISION ZERO DIFFER FROM THE TRADITIONAL APPROACH American cities are adopting Vision Zero, drawn to its departure from traditional approaches to traffic safety. But what makes Vision Zero an innovative road safety policy with the potential to make our streets safe? In this case study — the first in a series — we identify the key elements that distinguish Vision Zero. WHEN LOWERING SPEED MATTERS MOST When it comes to advancing Vision Zero — the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries — speed matters most. And as Vision Zero momentum grows across the nation, more cities have been stepping up lead on this critical safety issue of managing speed forsafety.
ACTING FOR RACIAL JUSTICE & JUST MOBILITY Vision Zero, as first developed and as the Network supports it in the U.S., focuses on proactively improving the built environment and systems — such as safe street designs, slow speeds, and policies that promote safe movement — rather than on reactive, punitive enforcement methods or unproven, victim-blaming education strategies.Yet, most
