Churchill Man of Words, © Churchill War Rooms (Private loan) In his lifetime Churchill published more than forty books in sixty volumes, as well as hundreds of articles. In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his contribution to the written and spoken word. While he is celebrated for his wit and colourful quotations, it is for the impact of his speeches and broadcasts that he is now justly remembered. Whether warning of the dangers of fascism, rallying the British nation against attack or wrestling with the problems of the Cold War, ‘he mobilised the English language and sent it into battle’. You will already know lots of Churchillian phrases, even if you don’t realise they were spoken by Churchill: ‘Blood, toil, tears and sweat’, ‘this was their finest Hour’, ‘never ... was so much owed by so many to so few’. Learn more about Churchill, the man – and master – of words. Read More > Churchill Man of Action, IWM (H 16645) During the WWII, Churchill had little red labels attached to important documents with the words ‘Action This Day’. It was one of the many ways in which he sought to drive and enthuse those around him. He was always a man of action. As a young man, he sought danger in the army and as a war correspondent. When not on the battlefield, he played polo. He learned to fly in 1913, only ten years after the first aeroplane flight and had several near crashes. During the WWI he spent five months commanding a battalion of Royal Scots Fusiliers in the trenches of the Western Front and in the WWII he crossed U-Boat infested waters and flew through enemy-contested skies to visit Allied leaders and the troops in the field. In this section, you’ll learn more about Churchill’s lifelong desire to be at the centre of theaction. Read More >
Churchill Archives, Broadwater Collection Churchill enjoyed life to the fullest. He liked Cuban cigars, French champagne, Scottish whisky and excellent food. He ‘was easily satisfied with the best’. He cultivated a distinctive personal style with his love of military uniforms, his zip up ‘siren suits’, his bow ties and his V for Victory hand gestures. What is less well known is that in his youth he was also a keen sportsman. He was a school boy fencing champion and a champion polo player. While he enjoyed travelling and holidays and the glamour of the film world, he was nowhere happier than at his country house, Chartwell in Kent, surrounded by family and his animals; dogs, cats, swans, fish, pigs and sheep. In this section, you’ll be able to find out more about Churchill’s life away from the political world – his enthusiasms and hobbies and his own particular inimitable style. Read More > Churchill Archives, Baroness Spencer Churchill Papers Churchill took up painting in 1915 at the age of forty after his sudden fall from office over the disastrous Dardanelles campaign. He hoped it would provide a distraction, and he threw himself into it wholeheartedly. Some of his first paintings were done on the Western Front during the WWI. He preferred oils and tended to favour landscapes. Over five hundred paintings have now been traced. He successfully submitted for the Royal Academy exhibition under a false name, but really painted for fun and often gave his paintings away to friends. They can now command a considerable value. You can visit his painting studio at Chartwell and see examples of his paintings at many other sites, including Blenheim. Churchill called his paintings his ‘daubs’. Was he more than a talented amateur? Decide for yourself.Read More >
Churchill Archives Centre, Broadwater Collection Family was always important to Winston Churchill. In his own words, he ‘married and lived happily ever after’ (My Early Life). He married Clementine Hozier on 12 September 1908, after proposing to her in the Temple of Diana at Blenheim Palace. The wedding took place at St Margaret’s Church Westminster, opposite the Houses of Parliament. They had five children; Diana, Randolph, Sarah, Marigold and Mary. Marigold died in infancy. He was nowhere happier than at his country house, Chartwell, in Kent surrounded by his family and by his animals; dogs, cats, swans, fish, pigs sheep and butterflies. He could have been buried in London but chose to lie alongside his parents in St Martin’s churchyard at Bladon, within sight of his birthplace at Blenheim Palace. This section will tell you more about his familylife. Read More >
UK Parliament/Jessica Taylor Churchill’s historic legacy is almost certainly his contribution to the survival of democracy in Western Europe during WWII. He is commemorated in many statues, sculptures, street names and buildings. Different aspects of his life can be investigated at many of the sites associated with him – Blenheim, Chartwell, the Churchill War Rooms, the National Churchill Museum at Fulton – and his archives can be researched at the Churchill Archives Centre and online. But there are also a number of living legacies that seek to educate and inspire future generations, such as the International Churchill Societies; Churchill College, Cambridge; the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and the English-Speaking Union. This section will tell you more about Churchill’s influence today – and his potential impact on tomorrow’s generation. Read More >* Man of Words
