Martha Macintyre was born in 1945 in Melbourne. After attending school at Maribyrnong High School and Mac Robertson Girls' High School, she graduated with a degree in History from the University of Melbourne in 1970 before moving on to postgraduate study in anthropology at Cambridge University.
