* A crowd of 9,000 packed the small Perpignan stadium to see Folau'sdebut
* Most clubs in the league are deeply unsettled with his entry intotheir competition
* Lord Hayward is demanding the Government pressure Catalans' UK-based sponsors to dump the team At the first touch of the ball, in the sixth minute of the game, the 30-year-old Australian scored, giving the home team an early lead. "Izzy, Izzy," the crowd chanted, caring little about his pastindiscretions.
The Catalans Dragons went on to win the match 36-18. As he ran onto the field for the first time in 10 months, to play rugby league for the first time in 10 years, there was not a hint of a boo that could be heard above the cheers. "I think he's good for the Catalans and good for the world," one supporter told the ABC as the game was about to get underway. "It's his decision," said another. > "What he says, you like or you don't but for the Super League he's > very important." "I hope he likes our country," another Catalans Dragons supporteroffered.
"And I hope he plays good games for our team." There's little doubt about that. Wearing the number 4 jersey, Folau stood large and proved himself against those on the field.PHOTO: A crowd of
around 9,000 packed into the small Perpignan stadium (ABC News:Timothy Stevens)
"He's pulled up really, really well considering everything that went before … He was ready to play," said coach Steve McNamara, adding that he had been nervous before the game. "I was probably most impressed with his defence." A crowd of around 9,000 packed into the small Perpignan stadium and playing at home for his debut was the obvious move. Not only for Folau, but his team-mates needed the crowd on their side. Never before has a regular round Super League match received such international attention, with the polarising Folau drawing a large media contingent to the Southern French city. By and large, they weren't there to watch his rugby league skills — so inconsequential was the match it wasn't even broadcast live. > "People know the headline but they don't know the person," Coach> McNamara said.
"Give him time, let him play, let him get on the field." THE FOLAU CONTROVERSY With his debut done, the Catalans Dragons will hope the controversy over Folau's signing will fall away. But it won't.
THE IRONY OF THE FOLAU 'SETTLEMENT' The Israel Folau fiasco has sucked oxygen and money from rugby at a time it can ill afford it, following years of disasters for the sport, writes Mary Gearin.
With each match, the hostility will remain. Most clubs in the 25-year-old league are deeply unsettled with the Australian's entry into their competition. The Super League's management was forced to admit it needs greater authority going forward to stop similar controversial signings intothe future.
And there are those in the UK who won't just let it slide, even if Folau keeps his mouth shut as stipulated in his contract. For one, Lord Robert Hayward — the founding member of the first all-gay rugby union club in the UK and a member of a cross-party parliamentary group for the sport — won't let it rest. He points to Folau's homophobic post which states "hell awaits" gay people still being up on his Instagram account, and wants the British Government to respond. "As far as everyone is concerned, it is homophobic," Lord Haywardsaid.
"If you inserted the words in relation to race or religion, it would be absolutely clear, so I want the Government to express its views." A spokesman for the Catalans Dragons denied security had removed rainbow flags from two women in the crowd but said banners they were carrying were taken off them as it was against grounds policy.PHOTO: Lord
Robert Hayward says Catalans Dragons' sponsors should reconsider their deals with the rugby league club. (ABC News: Timothy Stevens) CALLS TO WITHDRAW SPONSORSHIP Lord Hayward is demanding the Government pressure Catalans' UK-based sponsors to dump the team. "I'm hoping that the Government in their responses will encourage some of the sponsors to express their views to the Catalan Dragons," Lord Hayward told the ABC. Irish company O'Neills provides the Dragons with its apparel and issued a statement at the time of the signing saying it does not share the beliefs of Folau. "They are a British and Irish company, they operate in the world of rugby in Britain and they have to decide what they are going to do,"Lord Hayward said.
"They need to do more than just put out a strong statement."PHOTO:
With his debut done, the Catalans Dragons will hope the controversy over Folau's signing will fall away. (ABC News: Timothy Stevens) He wants them and other sponsors, including French multinational insurance company AXA, to go further. > "I hope they feel obliged to withdraw their sponsorship," he said. Super League club Hull KR has threatened legal action against the Dragons if it suffers financial loss in relation to the fallout overFolau's signing.
It is not the first time the Perpignan-based club has swooped up sacked Australian players — in the past they have also signed controversial players in former NSW State of Origin stars Greg Birdand Todd Carney.
Folau has long said he won't be silenced, but his deal with the French-based team and the Rugby Football League means he'll be immediately terminated if he dares to. The Dragons will hope his rugby league does the talking, but can he keep quiet for 12 whole months? TOPICS: rugby-league , lgbt , religion-and-beliefs, france ,
