LOS ANGELES >> Los Angeles Football Club lacked the intensity that it showed during Thursday’s 3-0 victory over Club León in the CONCACAF Champions League, but the club pitched its second shutout in four days and rode Carlos Vela’s goal in the waning moments of the first half to a 1-0 victory over Inter Miami in its 2020 Major League Soccer homeopener.
LAFC made only two changes to the starting eleven that faced León against Miami. In the midfield, Francisco Ginella started in place of Eduard Atuesta. Veteran Jordan Harvey was slotted into the left back position occupied by Diego Palacios on Thursday. “After Thursday, winning today is a real team win. Our passing wasn’t as sharp, our pressing wasn’t as committed or as intense. Miami put a lot into it, but we got just an amazing goal,” said head coach Bob Bradley. “Not our best , but winning in that way is important for us.” Despite the difference in pace and energy, LAFC played well against Inter Miami; the team’s attack was able to break down Miami’s defense on several occasions throughout the match and finished with just one less shot on target than LAFC managed against León. LAFC had two goals called back by the offsides flag and several on target attempts foiled by Inter Miami captain Luis Robles, who had a strong showing in goal despite the loss. Robles thwarted several dangerous attempts from Diego Rossi and Brian Rodriguez throughout the first half. The lone goal of the match came in the 44th minute, courtesy of LAFC’s captain. Vela, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Sunday, ran through Inter Miami’s backline and finished with a left-footed chip from 20 yards out that sailed over Robles moments before the halftime whistle. “When you come to see football and then the game is determined on a play like that, which was a combination of determination, strength, still having an idea of how to get away the positioning of the goalkeeper,” Bradley said of Vela’s goal. “ to finish with that delicate chip was just incredible.” Inter Miami’s best opportunity to score against LAFC came moments before Vela’s timely strike. New LAFC starting goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer managed a double save against two close range attempts from Miami designated player Rodolfo Pizarro and defender Nicolás Figal. Vela scored minutes after Vermeer ended the threat. Overall, Vermeer defended six shots on target from Inter Miami to maintain the cleansheet.
“They have some talented players, I still think they are probably trying to figure out how to use them all. Pizarro as a number ten is dangerous; he looks to combine. Robinson was running into the channels really well. He got behind us a couple of times. We were able to snuff it out, but it was interesting,” said defender Jordan Harvey. “Our goal in the game was to come in with energy, to match the energy that we brought in that Champions League game. It was going to be difficult; we started a lot of guys that played in that game, but I thought everybody stepped up to that challenge.” The teams played to a scoreless draw in the second half; the most memorable moment came in the 68th minute when Inter Miami midfielder Lee Nguyen, who spent the last two seasons with LAFC, entered the match as Miami’s first substitution. Nguyen received a standing ovation from the 22,121 fans in attendance, but was unable to help Miami find a tying goal to salvage a point in its inaugural match inMLS.
The next time LAFC take the field will be March 8th at home against the Philadelphia Union in the team’s second match of the 2020 MLSregular season.
