IS DUSTY BAKER THE ASTROS’ CHOICE?Chandler Rome ,
Houston Chronicle Jan. 28, 2020 Updated: Jan. 28, 2020 6:46 p.m.Comments
Dusty Baker’s most recent managerial job was a two-season stint with the Washington Nationals that ended after the 2017 season. Photo: Karen Warren, Staff Photographer / Houston Chronicle The Astros’ managerial search is focused on Dusty Baker, but the two sides have not finalized a deal, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told the Chronicle on Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, USA Today reported the Astros were “about to choose” Baker as their manager, citing a “person familiar with the hiring.” The Associated Press reported the two sides were “working to finalize an agreement.” Baker and Astros owner Jim Crane have spoken since Baker’s initial interview, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. No deal or agreement to a deal could be confirmed by anyone to whom theChronicle spoke.

Speculation was further inflamed by Baker’s son, Darren, who retweeted USA Today’s initial report of his father’s hiring. Later, Darren Baker tweeted the infamous GIF of Astros third baseman Alex Bregman’s full-throated screams in the Fenway Park dugout during the 2017 American League Division Series. It was later deleted. Across 22 seasons with four National League franchises, Dusty Baker has won 1,863 games and possesses a .532 lifetime winning percentage. Nine of his teams reached postseason play. The 2002 San Francisco Giants captured the National League pennant under Baker, who carries an otherwise uninspiring 23-22 playoff record. When in Houston to interview for the Astros job, Baker, 70, expressed a strong desire to reach 2,000 wins, a milestone reached by only 11 managers in major league history, most recently Bruce Bochy last year. With Bochy retired, Baker would become the winningest active manager, a title presently held by the Indians’ Terry Francona (1,667victories).
To get the 137 wins he needs to reach 2,000, Baker would require at minimum a two-year contract. The Astros have won at least 101 games for three consecutive seasons. Baker won NL Manager of the Year honors three times during his 10-year tenure with the Giants. After he left San Francisco in 2002, he had stints with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals, but he hasn’t managed since the Nationals fired him following the 2017 season. If Baker is the Astros’ choice, he would offer sorely-needed internal stability in an organization with little of which to speak. Houston fired manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow amid the electronic sign-stealing scandal that’s rocked the sport and claimed the jobs of two other managers — the Red Sox’s Alex Cora and the Mets’ Carlos Beltran. Though Crane claimed prior major league managerial experience is not a prerequisite for the job, Baker presents more than the eight otherknown candidates.
Baker is the only candidate Crane has specifically addressed. Before the Houston Sports Awards last week, Crane said Baker was “right at the top” of his list. Crane had set Feb. 3 as an initial target date to hire Hinch’s replacement, but a timeline he gave last week intimated that he act more quickly. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Feb. 12. The interview process, according to Crane, has been a “three- or four-pronged approach.” He’s allowed the remaining members of Luhnow’s baseball operations staff and other executives within the organization the chance for involvement. The Astros owner interviewed eight other candidates including 20-year veteran Buck Showalter and John Gibbons, who managed the Blue Jays for 11 seasons. Incumbent bench coach Joe Espada, ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez, former Astros catcher Brad Ausmus and former Rangers manager Jeff Banister were among the others in consideration._
