Arun Vijay in Mafia
Movie Name: Mafia
Director: Karthick Naren Mafia, as the name suggests, is about a drug-dealing gang who has crazy connections across the world. Director Karthick Naren’s film pits narcotics bureau chief Aaryan (Arun Vijay) and drug lord Diwaker Kumaran (Prasanna) against each other. The cat and mouse game between the two characters form the rest of the story. A film like this is highly reliant on adrenaline-pumping moments that make the proceedings intriguing to watch. However, there are only a few fleeting moments of brilliance in this two-hour snooze fest. Aaryan and his team members Sathya (Priya Bhavani Shankar) and Varun are trying to bust Chennai’s drug racket and get closer to the main distributor. A series of murders happen which brings Aaryan and the team closer to Diwaker Kumaran. Director Karthick Naren has attempted to tell an uber-stylised version of an action thriller and he has achieved it in terms of presentation. Both Arun and Prasanna look their best and their fashion game is onpoint, too.
The screenplay of Mafia, however, was quite underwhelming. The first half of the film is overloaded with slo-mo shots that intends to glorify the hero, Arun Vijay. Karthick could have gone a little easy on the slow-motion shots as it completely ruined the effect of the film. Also, the first half feels overstretched, even though the entire film runs for just 1 hour and 52 minutes. Mafia also suffers from predictability. The twist in the climax was a slight attempt to turn the film around, but the audience is as brilliant as Aaryan and Diwaker, and we can already guess what's going on in their mind. So, no, the twist didn't work either.advertisement
The film picks up pace in the second half before Aaryan gets ready for the epic face-off with Diwaker. The scene where he instructs his team to attack Diwaker’s men simultaneously, made us sit up and watch the film with full concentration. Arun Vijay is perfect in his role as an honest officer. His modulation and body language suited him just right. Prasanna could literally sleepwalk in this role, which is full of swag. However, there could have been more detailing in his character. The most-disappointing part of Mafia is Priya Bhavani Shankar’s character. She is easily replaceable in the film. She gets introduced in the film as Aaryan’s aide, even as the camera focussed on him. Finally, when the focus is on her, she is seen falling for Aaryan. Throughout the film, Aaryan handholds her and Varun. This is where Karthick Naren’s inexperience creeps in. While we get that the film is all about the two main characters, the other characters need not really be so easily replaceable. Gokul Benoy’s cinematography and Sreejith Sarang’s editing are a huge plus, though.
Karthick Naren’s Mafia could have been a brilliant action thriller if only it had more redeemable moments featuring Arun Vijay andPrasanna.
