Police have shot and killed a man in Brisbane CBD after reports he wascarrying a knife.
A man was shot dead in Brisbane after allegedly approaching police with a knife._Source:Supplied_WARNING: Graphic
Two overseas visitors to Brisbane were targeted in a terrifying “unexplained” attack this morning that left one man in hospital with a stab wound, while the alleged attacker was shot dead in theCBD.
A Queensland Police spokesman told reporters this afternoon that a couple were walking near Mary and Edward streets, when a man walking towards them stopped and allegedly produced a knife from a bag he wascarrying.
They did not know the man and police say there was no verbal exchangebetween them.
“It my understanding is they’d been in the city centre and they were like ordinary folk walking down the street,” the spokesmansaid.
“This other man — who has now died — he was walking towards them. That’s where he stopped. They’ve stopped. They thought it was bit odd and the interaction continued from there.” When they saw the knife, the couple turned to flee and the woman got away but the man was chased by the attacker. “A short distance later the male stopped because he thought the person chasing him had stopped,” the police spokesman said. “At that time he was struck in the face. It’s turned out that he’s now got a broken nose and an injured lip.” The 26-year-old man then felt something sharp in his back and it’s believed he was stabbed. He was taken to hospital and his wound has been treated by a “single stitch”. Police also confirmed that the attacker, an Australian resident born in 1995 and aged in his 20s, discarded one knife and produced anotherone.
The man was later found by police and he allegedly confronted officers with the knife and was shot dead. The shooting happened near the Westin Hotel in Mary St around 10am and the area is still in lockdown. And odd. And they stopped when he stopped. He’s pulled something out of a bag which turns outto be a knife.”
“My understanding is they’re shaken. And because this was a very, very rapid series of events where they will allege they were underthreat.”
The spokesman said the alleged attacker was known to police but did not go into more details. Police believe it was an “one-off incident with a single individual”, although investigations are continuing. “When we have incidents like this that where the motivation for it is unexplained, we wanted to dig deeper,” the spokesman said. “I can tell you that at the moment I don’t have any information that confirms or makes this an active CT (counter-terrorism)investigation.
“Anyone who has any information that may help us understand the motivation of this man for what has happened today, we definitely wantto hear from them.
“But everything that’s come to me at the moment is this is two people, visitors to our city … have been confronted by a man and (it’s been) a terrifying incident for them, and a terrifying incident for the police officers involved.” Emergency services work on the man shot dead in the Brisbane CBD._Source:Supplied_ In an earlier statement Queensland Police said they were called to a disturbance following reports a man armed with a knife had stabbedanother man.
It will be alleged the man charged at officers and was critically injured when police returned fire. The man was pronounced dead at thescene.
A guest of the Westin Hotel told AAP she heard several gunshots, but thought they were fireworks. “I came outside and I saw someone lying on the ground and (police) were performing CPR,” the guest told AAP. Reports suggested a man was seen running “covered in blood” with multiple wounds to his head. He ran into a hotel on Felix Street seeking help, according to the _Courier Mail_.
When police arrived at the scene they shot the man dead after multiple attempts to tell him to “drop the knife”. Several crime scenes have been established including around the man’s car, the area where the alleged stabbing took place, and the location where police shot the man. “I heard yelling, then a rapid fire of gunshots, it was a lot of shots,” witness Adam Leishman told news.com.au, who lives in an apartment above the Westin and was approximately 15 metres away when the incident unfolded. “I saw all these people running towards me. My initial thought was that there was a gunman, I ran and dialled triple-zero. “I saw the body, I don’t know if he was alive or dead at thispoint,
“I’ve seen that one of the cops had a knife on the side, and a dead man on the road. Police are appealing for anyone with any information which could assist with the investigation to contact or come forward. _.
The publication says it understands “the attack was random andunprovoked”.
“As a result the man is deceased,” police told news.com.au, saying the “circumstances are yet to be investigated”. Police said the man was armed with a knife. “You could see them standing over a body with their guns drawn,” another witness said. “It’s quite an incredible scene to see that.” The area where the shooting took place is filled with hotels andapartment blocks.

Police and ambo presence was so quick,” saidanother.
A crime scene has been established, however, there is no longer a threat to the public. This matter is under investigation by Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner, and is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
