Philip Rivers is leaving San Diego, but he’s not moving to Los Angeles to join the Chargers. Rivers and his family won’t be a two-hour commute away from Costa Mesa. They’re moving thousands of miles east to Florida, Rivers confirmed to ESPN last week. The surprising move could mean the end of the Rivers-Chargers partnership. Rivers renting an apartment in Orange County for the 2020 season doesn’t seem likely, but of course, it’s an option. So the 16-year marriage with the Chargers isn’t officially over. But the 2019 regular season ended nearly a month ago, and the Chargers and Rivers haven’t agreed to a contract extension or announced his return for next season. So with the team remaining quiet, Rivers is likely already looking at other playing options. The Chargers and Rivers were Super Bowl contenders a year ago. Onedisastrous season
later, and here we are, writing about six potential landing spots for Rivers. Who would have thought? TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS When Rivers confirmed his move to Florida, many looked to the three Sunshine State teams as possible landing spots, and the Buccaneers made the most sense. The Miami Dolphins are in rebuild mode and the Jacksonville Jaguars owe Nick Foles plenty of money and also have Gardner Minshew, who showed promise in his rookie season. The Buccaneers aren’t viewed as Super Bowl contenders as of January, but they made a late postseason push in 2019. They have the offensive weapons with wide receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and tight ends Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard. The defense needs work in the secondary, but was ranked first against the run. Tampa Bay’s roster is appealing, but what might sway Rivers the most is the head coach. Bruce Arians is known as a quarterback whisperer for his success with Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck and Carson Palmer. Rivers could have a late-career surge under Arians, similar to what Palmer had in Arizona, when Arians was the head coach for five seasons. But Rivers isn’t the only option for the Buccaneers. They have Jameis Winston, the quarterback who threw for 5,109 yards (league high) and 30 interceptions (league high) in 2019. Winston, who’s scheduled to be a free agent, has a reckless style similar to Rivers, but he’s 12 years younger. Arians, 67, will need to decide which quarterback gives him the best opportunity to win now.CHICAGO BEARS
If winning a Super Bowl is Rivers’ top priority, the Bears might be his best option. The Bears aren’t as deep on offense as the Buccaneers, but Rivers wouldn’t need to score 30 points per game because of Chicago’s stellar defense. If Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Jackson and the other star defenders stay healthy, the Bears could return to being the No. 1 defense they were in 2018. On offense, Rivers would have a reliable running back tandem in David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen, and a solid receiving unit with Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller and Taylor Gabriel. But before the Bears can pursue Rivers, they’ll need to make a tough decision on quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Would they really give up on him after three seasons? They’ve invested plenty on the former No. 2 overall pick. The upside Trubisky displayed in 2018 when the Bears won the division could be enough for the organization to stick with the young quarterback.INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Rivers is very familiar with the Colts’ coaching staff. Before Frank Reich became the Colts’ head coach and won a Super Bowl as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, he spent three seasons with the Chargers from 2013 to 2015. Reich worked closely with Rivers as the offensive play caller for two of those seasons with the Chargers. Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni spent five seasons with the Chargers as a wide receivers and quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2017. But the Colts offer more than just a familiar coaching staff, they have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, with left tackle Anthony Castonzo and left guard Quenton Nelson leading the way. Rivers would get to throw to No. 1 wideout T.Y. Hilton and hand it off to running back Marlon Mack. The Colts have work to do on defense, but have star linebacker Darius Leonard. The Colts would likely become AFC South contenders if they trade in Jacoby Brissett for Rivers. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS If Tom Brady leaves to join the Chargers, as many are predicting, or any other team, the Patriots would have an opening at quarterback. It would be strange for Rivers to join the Patriots, the team that knocked the Chargers out of the postseason multiple times in the past 14 seasons. But joining Patriots coach Bill Belichick would give him a chance to contend for a Super Bowl. But if Brady does play elsewhere, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Patriots decide to get younger at quarterback. This is a long-shot destination for Rivers. Trading places? It’s purely cold-beverage speculation at this point, of course, but wouldn’t it be something if Tom Brady, left, and Philip Rivers end up swapping teams this offseason? (Photo byElsa/Getty Images)
TENNESSEE TITANS
If Rivers has a wish list for potential landing spots, the Titans would likely be at the top because Nashville’s only about a two-hour drive from his hometown of Decatur, Alabama. But Ryan Tannehill’s breakout 2019 season might have ruined Rivers’ opportunity for a homecoming. Tannehill ignited the Titans’ run to the AFC Championship Game, and likely earned himself a second contract to stay in Nashville. But if contract negotiations with the soon-to-be free agent gets messy, that could give Rivers an opening to return home. His film-room motor SUV would go from San Diego to Costa Mesa to a different two-hour route in the South.OAKLAND RAIDERS
This one doesn’t seem likely, but Raiders coach Jon Gruden did tell Chargers reporters on a conference call he prefers a quarterback who takes risks down the field than one who plays it safe with short passes. Rivers fits that bill. Gruden is a fan of Rivers, but that doesn’t mean he’ll dump Derek Carr for him. If Gruden decides Carr isn’t the answer at quarterback, he’ll likely look to the draft rather than signing a veteran. Don’t worry too much, Chargers fans. It’s an out-of-sight option for now.RELATED ARTICLES
