AFP via Getty Images Katie Boulter has joined Johanna Konta and Kyle Edmund in heading home early from the Australian Open after losing out to Elina Svitolina.
The odds were stacked against the 23-year-old, playing in her first Slam match since April 2019 and against the no.5 seed Svitolina proved a step too far as she lost 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and21 minutes.
But the Briton fought hard in a tight first set, only succumbing when the Ukrainian nailed down a break to love to take the first set 6-4. Boulter broke Svitolina and locked down the break early in the second, but Svitolina's superb ability to return everything proved too difficult for the Yorkshire-born player. Svitolina eventually broke back and took four games in a row before wrapping up a straight sets triumph after a late surge from Boulter, who can leave Melbourne with her head held high after a courageousperformance.
