The forensic scene where a man was shot dead by police after allegedly stabbing a man outside the Westin hotel in central Brisbane. Photograph: Glenn Hunt/AAP A man has been shot dead by police outside the Westin hotel on Mary Street in Brisbane’s CBD. The street was closed between Edward Street and Albert Street from 10am on Sunday, and motorists and pedestrians have been advised toavoid the area.
Queensland
police said the man had allegedly stabbed another man on Mary Streetabout 10am.
Chief Supt Tony Fleming said the man approached a couple outside the hotel, and “and it escalated from there”. He said the victims said the man was behaving strangely, and pulled aknife out of a bag.

The woman fled back to the hotel, but the man she was with was stabbed. Fleming said the pair were not from Australia, and didn’tknow the man.
“ were visitors to the city.” When police arrived on the scene, he was shot when he allegedly ran at the officers, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fleming said a 26-year-old man was taken to hospital but was discharged soon after with a broken nose, an injured lip and a cut tohis back.
A guest of the Westin hotel told AAP she heard several gunshots, but thought they were fireworks. “I came outside and I saw someone lying on the ground and (police) were performing CPR,” she said. The incident will be investigated by the ethical standards command in Queensland police on behalf of the Queensland coroner, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission. Police will be relying on CCTV footage, they have identified the car of the man and they have said the motivation for the attack is not known, but he was known to the police. The man shot dead was born in 1995, and was born in Australia, but Fleming declined to provide more information until his family had beennotified.
Several crime scenes in the area have been established, and police have asked for anyone with information to come forward. AMERICA FACES AN EPIC CHOICE... ... this year, and the results will define the country for a generation. These are perilous times. Over the last three years, much of what the Guardian holds dear has been threatened – democracy, civility, truth. This US administration is establishing new norms of behaviour. Anger and cruelty disfigure public discourse and lying is commonplace. Truth is being chased away. But with your help we can continue to put it center stage. Rampant disinformation, partisan news sources and social media's tsunami of fake news is no basis on which to inform the American public in 2020. The need for a robust, independent press has never been greater, and with your support we can continue to provide fact-based reporting that offers public scrutiny and oversight. Our journalism is free and open for all, but it's made possible thanks to the support we receive from readers like you across America in all 50states.
On the occasion of its 100th birthday in 1921 the editor of the Guardian said, "Perhaps the chief virtue of a newspaper is its independence. It should have a soul of its own." That is more true than ever. Freed from the influence of an owner or shareholders, the Guardian's editorial independence is our unique driving force andguiding principle.
We hope you will consider supporting us today. We need your support to keep delivering quality journalism that’s open and independent. Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable. SUPPORT THE GUARDIAN FROM AS LITTLE AS $1 – AND IT ONLY TAKES AMINUTE. THANK YOU.
