THE TURNING REVIEW – HAM-FISTED TRICKERY SAPS A CLASSIC GHOST STORY 2 / 5 stars 2 out of 5 stars. This new, jump-scary adaptation of Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw is a contrived and spiritless disappointmentPeter Bradshaw

performance … Mackenzie Davis in The Turning. Photograph: PatrickRedmond/AP
Henry James’s classic 1898 ghost story The Turn of the Screwis
splodged with unsubtlety in this jump-scary new screen version, wasting a lot of acting talent. It is a bag of very familiar horror tricks from the screenwriting brothers Chad and Carey Hayes, who scripted so-so chillers such as The Reaping (2007) and The Conjuring (2013), and it’s directed by Floria Sigismondi. The Hayeses top off their by-the-numbers movie with a bizarre trick ending that explains their take on James’s title – sort of – and messes with the timeline in a way that’s certainly unexpected, yet exasperatingly contrived and involves suddenly and unsatisfyingly promoting a minor character. This finale may also be there to set up a pointless new franchise: The Turning 2, 3 etc.Advertisement
It’s set in the 1990s (we kick off with a reference to Kurt Cobain) in a creepy old manor house supposedly in Maine. This is a place with, in Withnail’s words, the kind of windows that faces look in at. And this they duly do, screamingly, pretty much every few minutes. Mackenzie Davis does her intelligent, assured best with the role of Kate, a young woman improbably hired in the olden-days job of “governess” (as opposed to, say, live-in nanny-slash-tutor) to two orphans in a remote mansion: 10-year-old Flora (a sparky Brooklynn Prince) and her stroppy teen brother Miles (Finn Wolfhard). The only other adult present is the fierce, gaunt housekeeper Mrs Grose (good stuff from Barbara Marten). But it soon becomes clear that these eerie children had a very close relationship to the former governess, Miss Jessel, and former riding instructor Quint, whose awful fate lingers supernaturally in the gloomy corridors. This film makes explicit the implied sexuality in the original, which isn’t necessarily a wrong thing to do at all, but everything is very ham-fisted and crass, with nothing like the ambiguous shimmer of the original story or the style and elegance of the 1961 Jack Clayton film version, The Innocents, with
Deborah Kerr, and it almost entirely loses the exquisitely disturbing sense of children being able to see ghosts and keeping that a secret from the grownups. A weirdly spiritless film. • The Turning is released in the UK on 24 January and in the US and Australia on 25 January.states.

For me the power of The Turn of the Screw is that prima facie the whole set up is so idyllic - a beautiful house, an eden type garden, a lovely summer, two beautiful children an 'untouched' governess - and the story suggests without stating an inherent corruption in each of these elements which build to a climax. Essentially it seems to me to be a play on the skin-deep purity of Victorian moral values. Looking at the trailer, moving it to the 90s…Jump to comment

Thank you for watching this so I don’t have to. It beggars belief that somebody read James taught, subtle masterpiece and thought that what it really needed was ‘jump scares’ and a plot twist. Heaven forfend film makers coming up with an original idea in 2020, let alone a faithful retelling.Jump to comment

The Innocents, a perfect film, makes this version totally unnecessary ... the only reason to see a different version is the brilliant music in Britten's operatic version.Reply

A year or so ago I read that a new cinematic adaptation of this story was about to start filming in Ireland, directed by Steven Spielberg. Surely this isn't it? Then again, Sir Ridley Scott has an Executive Producer credit on "Mindhorn", so maybe Spielberg's involved somehow. Though I'm not sure how anyone could imagine that making the implicit sex explicit would work after that master of understated subtlety Michael Winner tried it in 1972 with "The Nightcomers", a prequel in which the sinful servants are played by Marlon Brando and Stephanie Beacham, and we see exactly what they got up to that was so unspeakable; a bit of rather mild S&M, apparently. Other than the acting, the concept, and having Michael Winner's name on it, the only horrific thing about that movie is the scene where Brando amuses the kiddies by showing them how to make a frog explode. By the way, is it a new rule of cinema that if you make a lousy movie with ghosts in it, the title has to follow the formula "The ________ing" but you can fill the blank with literally any word at all? If I see a title like "The Seeping", or "The Scratching", or even "The Armchairing", I know it'll be about a straggly-haired dead girl emerging horribly but not unexpectedly from somewhere or other. and it'll almost certainly be rubbish. Maybe the Hayes brothers could make one called "The Scraping" about a haunted barrel?Reply

This essentially is it, yes. There was all the usual guff in the press about it being a "Steven Spielberg film," but he was never anything more than executive producer. It was shot in Wicklow.Reply

The idea that the name 'Spielberg' automatically lends quality to a film went out the window with Raiders 4, surely? It had only been hanging on by it's fingertips by then in any event.Reply

I enjoyed the version on telly at Christmas, with her off of Downton Abbey. Really the original book isn't some pristine classic, it's a great story but written in a horrible convoluted style.Reply

Check out Kate Bush's take on it, _The Infant Kiss_. There's a YouTube video with clips added from the 60s movie. The French version too - much sexier intonation and the lyrics are less disturbing if you don't translate them (_just a kid, still in school, back home they'd call me dirty ... I want to smack but I hold back, I only want to touch ... speak of adult love _ etc.). Actually it's probably a bit like this version - more explicit than the original story or the 60s movie. Although she has said it was based on the movie and is meant to be (spoiler alert) an insight into the mind of a delusional person rather than a depiction of reality.Reply

The Others...but then,Eric Sykes could do no wrong in my eyes. I think casting someone best known for comedy roles,in a ghost story, somehow added to the atmospherics. The Haunting(1963) proves that what you don't see,is far more scary than what you do see. The Haunting(1999) proves that there are things best not seen at all.Reply

Looking at the trailer, moving it to the 90s puts it in a much more knowing era and shifting the boy to be a teenager completely loses that sense of innocence subverted.Reply

If you are going to compare pre and post CGI ghost moves, then _The Hauntin_g is the classic example. We have Robert Wise's 1963 version or the CGI heavy 1999 version directed by Jan de Bont. One is one of the scariest Movies ever made and the other is, well, terrible.Reply

That was supposed to be based on a true story and was complete bollocks. The couple involved are utter charlatans and that rather spoils things for me.Reply

I understand your point about the story not being 'the truth' - even if based on 'actual events' . but I still think its a very good film. I like Apocolypse Now as a film, even if I believe Born On The 4th Of July or Odd Angry Shot are more 'truthful'.Reply

The Innocents by Jack Clayton is, IMHO, the only version of the story that works on film. This looks terrible.Reply

A ghost story requires a dark winter night, wind howling outside, "Windows that faces look in at" and friends gathered round the fire to listen. Film is too explicit, too bright, too electric, too immediate. Stick to horror and leave us with M.R James and friends.Reply

I'm not sure about that. I still find the Jack Clayton version one of the creepiest cinematic experiences I have ever had and actually more enjoyable than the novella. The Christmas ghost stories the BBC did in the eventies are also great. The problem is that in an era of CGI the temptation is too great to make everything explicit when in fact the power of films such as The Innocent is that the fear lies just off screen, in the gaps between what is said and done.Reply

I agree with you, I've been too dismissive. CGI's the culprit, subtlety sacrificed for visuals.Reply

Thank you for watching this so I don’t have to. It beggars belief that somebody read James taught, subtle masterpiece and thought that what it really needed was ‘jump scares’ and a plot twist. Heaven forfend film makers coming up with an original idea in 2020, let alone a faithful retelling.Reply

I'll give it a miss then. Like Mark Kermode calls it: cattle-prodcinema.

It has it's place, the jump-cut. Just not all the time. And certainly not in any telling of _The Turnof the Screw_.

Sure the whole bloody point of the original was the subtlety. If you adapt it without that it immediately renders the thing pointless. It's like Aliens vs Alien.Reply

On the other hand, if you were to make a new horror work, that kind of ambiguity would come across as hackneyed and unimaginative at this point in time. Suggested ghosts are old hat. Now, you have to be able to show the ghost but still be scary, which is much harder in this context. This generation's unseen ghost is the unexplained ghost.Reply

Stpehen King's great weakness in this regard is that his stories are too long to not explain away all the mystery. They're not proper ghost stories. They wouldn't work around a campfire. They're adventurestories.

yes the explanation is always disappointing. We - I at least - want to know, even complain when we don't get told, yet get disappointed whenwe are.
Additionally, I love the film 'Night of the Demon' right up until wesee the demon.
historically horror has gone roughly like this: original/horror/male gothic: there are ghosts and they might get you. terror/female gothic: actually that was just the stress getting to her, the real danger is this or that person. Victorian Gothic: it's either science, or you're going mad. Maybe.Reply

M R James has already been given this treatment in the 50s adaptation of his story Casting of the Runes as Night of the Demon, aka Curse of the Demon, starring Dana Andrews as an American sceptical celebrity. Amazingly, it is almost entirely successful, despite the studio's notorious insistence against director Tourneur's wishes that the demon make an early on-screen appearance, and it is rightly acclaimed. But Turn of the Screw is I think unfilmable (and I include The Innocents), and I'm also mindful of a very tedious evening at Greenwich theatre watching a stage adaption. The story relies on its psychological power and subtlety, and simply lacks the objective drama to make it watchable in this way.Reply

Not sure about the Innocents - what makes it good is the fact that it doesn't try to film the story (which works through narrative perspective) but instead finds a cinematic way of talking about (mis)perception and fear, by showing things that you can't seeproperly.
