leaders,
BAYERN MUNICH, drew 0-0 with visiting RB LEIPZIG on Sunday, missing their chance to increase their lead at the top of the table, with their opponents staying a point behind in second place. Bayern, top on 43 points, enjoyed possession in a dominant first half but failed to score despite chances for Robert Lewandowski. INTERNAZIONALE 4-2 MILAN: SERIE A – AS IT HAPPENEDRead more
Leipzig, without a win now in their last four games in all competitions, waited patiently for their chances and they got them after the break but both Marcel Sabitzer and Timo Werner fired wide to squander golden scoring opportunities. Leipzig’s keeper, Peter Gulacsi, then tipped Leon Goretzka’s effort wide in the 80th minute, in Bayern’s best chance of thesecond half.

Sunday’s only other game between BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH, who are fourth on 39 points, and COLOGNE was postponed due to a storm warning. La Liga leaders, REAL MADRID, continued their rampant form by coming from behind to win 4-1 at OSASUNA for a fifth consecutive leaguevictory.
Zinedine Zidane’s side were reeling from a 4-3 home defeat by Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey on Thursday and started badly when Unai Núñez gave Osasuna the lead in the 14th minute with a diving headerfrom a corner.
Real showed little sign of panic, however, and the midfielder Isco equalised in the 33rd minute with a volley before the captain, Sergio Ramos, put them in front five minutes later with a header from close range after a flick-on from Casemiro. Two substitutes, Lucas Vazquez and Luka Jovic, stretched Real’s leadlater on.
Lionel Messi produced a hat-trick of assists as BARCELONA pulled off a gutsy 3-2 win away to REAL BETIS in La Liga after trailing twice in an enthralling match as the coach, Quique Setien, enjoyed a winning return to his former club. The French defender Clement Lenglet headed home the decisive goal in the 72nd minute from a Messi free-kick but was then sent off for two bookings, moments after Betis’s Nabil Fekir had been dismissed for earning two yellow cards.Read more
Second-half substitute Edinson Cavani rediscovered his scoring touch as PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN beat OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS 4-2 to edge closer to a seventh Ligue 1 title in eight years. The Uruguay striker, Cavani, struck his first goal in almost six months after being barely used on his return from injury. His goal completed the win to put PSG on 61 points from 24 games. Thomas Tuchel’s side, who also scored through Angel Di Maria, Kylian Mbappé and a Fernando Marcal own goal, lead second-placed Olympique de Marseille by 12 points. Lyon, who hit back with goals by Martin Terrier and Moussa Dembélé, are in ninth place on 33 points, eight behind Stade Rennais who hold the last Champions League qualifying spot.Topics

Setien now follows the path of Valverde by playing Roberto repeatedly in the right flank. He is a nothing player. What Firpo and Griezmann doing in the pitch?? Such a disgrace. Grizzy now playing old Barca type football. Always back and square passes. His only contribution was a gem of a pass to Messi. Vidal was awful today. Messi losses his goal scoring touch from January 2020. His final shot always going at a comfortable height usually which is very uncommon. Will he be able to score 25 goals in laliga this season?? One thing for sure that he will not be selected for B'dor this season. Not even top 10. On the other hand Ronaldo gets back his goal scoring touch(though most from penalty but goal is a goal) and will be a strong contender for B'dor this season. Though my vote goes to either Mane or VVD.Reply

Can I say something to calm the nerves of Bayern fans? Look, you're going to the finals of CL. And then you're going to be the ones to push them over the line and win it again. Just trust the team. League doesn't matter this season. You may win it but it is not the only thing what you want.Reply

I agree. I like Favre's attacking football but it 's becoming more clear with every match that the mental fragility of the squad is a direct reflection of the Coach.Reply

Barcelona seem to be playing better under Setien. The movement and the passing is much quicker and with more purpose. And Messi even while dealing with that nagging injury managed 3 assists. That's a great result. Once again these sub par referees in Spain think the crowd comes to see them. Fekir red card should never have been given.Reply

To be fair, the ref warned Fekir twice to stop talking before the card. Fekir was looking to get sent off with both the tackle and his inability to shut his mouth.Reply

I know Atalanta are the darlings of hipsters and tactical affiiciandos but that win at Fiorentina was dreadfully sloppy. Maybe the pitch was bad but scarcely anyone could take a pass cleanly - when one actually arrived where intended. What an awful looking stadium, too. Fans behind goals in the next telephone area code. The Milan derby was delightful. Great game. Great result. Good to see the new league leaders put down their jumped-up, mid-table co-tenants, who seem wholly reliant on their new celebrity shirt salesman. Impressed at the depth Inter have built. It may not be a long-term proposition, but the squad they have is built to win now and this is a good start after the transfer window. Conti must assume the entire sideline is his technical area.Reply

It wasn't one of La Dea's better performances, that is true. But an 85% pass completition rate is not too shabby for the hipstersdarlings.

Two more excellent games in Serie A today, with 42 shots in Parma and 33 in the Milan derby. Stats that were backed up, with the wonderful entertainment served up by all four clubs. Whilst, the Bundesliga top of the table clash, somehow remained goalless, despite the best efforts of both sides. Unfortunately, the afternoon's football started with a dismal performance by Athletic Club in the friendly derby. As only one side in striped shirts made any attempt to win the game, and eventually did so, but, god only knows what we were trying to achieve from theencounter though.

I haven't watched much Bundesliga for a long time, but this weekend I did watch Leverkusen v Dortmund and Bayern v Leipzig. I thought both games were extremely entertaining and the technical level and passing game seemed a lot better than in the Premier League, except perhaps Liverpool and City. I'm really not sure why so many people buy into the myth of the Premier League being the best league in the world. The two Bundesliga matches I watched I thought were much better value than what the Premier league often has on offer. The games were very open with both sides in both matches having a real go. So much better too watch than any team managed by Mourinho. In the Premier League teams don't seem to be willing to take any rsik any more, as because of the ridiculous amounts of money in the PL, winning, or rather PL survival seems to be the be all and end all, much at the expense of entertaining those who are footing the bill, i.e. the fans.Reply

199th goal for Cavani for PSG, number 1 scorer in PSG history ahead of Ibrahimovic (156). Nice that he stayed for most probably reaching the 200 target and have the proper exit he deserves at the end of the season. Also a useful back-up for Icardi who is kind of struggling toscore of late.

Good game on the whole for Lyon except for the comical own goal. They created many chances but it's as much down to their offensive qualities as to PSG current defensive troubles as they have 5 defenders who are injured, included usual starters Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Bernat. Lyon couldn't beat Amiens the game before so it's a bad week for them.Reply

Interesting match. Bayern clearly the better team, but they didn't necessarily have the better chances. Nkunku was consistently dangerous. The Bayern defense was caught napping repeatedly. Not sure I would pick either of these teams to win the Champions League, but I think they will both beat their English opponents in the first knockout round. Leipzig are better than Spurs, and I think Bayern will comfortably beat Lampard's wildly inconsistent Chelsea side, who didn't really deserve to advance from the group, tbf.Reply

Boga scored the winner, a header, in a 2-1 victory for Sassuolo over Spal. He also scored a vital goal in Sassuolo’s last game vs Roma. That is 11 goals/assists in 23 games this season. He will be in top demand around Europe next summer if he continues to keep this up. Immensely gifted dribbler who can play in a variety of forwardpositions.

Werner, 20 goals in 21 matches, so probably not just a hype-child. Worked very hard this evening, and, yes, missed a gilt-edged chance, but he is the real thing. And as for the game, dominance from B***** in the first half and a great effort from our boys in the second, the 0-0 certainly more disappointing for them than for us, and several (theoretically) easy games coming up for Leipzig: do not rule us, or Timo, out. TRADITION SEIT 2009!Reply

Good. Now hopefully Leipzig pick up the pace and dethrone Bayern. I've no love for these Red Bull teams but anything's better than a continuation of Bayern's dominance at this point (no league benefits from one team winning all the time) and since Dortmund are massive choke artists, Leipzig it is.Reply

“And at the end of the season buy Leipzig’s best players”. You mean like ManU used to do for 20 years as well as ManCity has over the past number of years? Then there’s “Southampton North”, er I mean Liverpool. Then Chelsea buying Kante.....Oh I forgot...the EPL never has had the problem of the top 6 teams buying players from the “have nots” er, I mean the rest of the EPL.Reply

Quite amusing that we had some mega-goalfests and tons of action, and the one getting the mainstream hype ends up 0-0. Gladbach possibly missed a chance today. Among all the goal machines, big respect to League 2 leaders Bielefeld, whose response to inevitable "big two applying the pressure" headlines after wins by Hamburg and Stuttgart yesterday was a 6-0. That was the result that made me gasp today.Reply

Yeah, clearly a statement of intent by the club-of-the-place-that-does-not-exist, scoring six againstJahn is quite something. And you should be happy that D98 created some breathing space while the match of the Storks is not certain to go through due to the light breeze around Holstein. Still reeling from the B04-bvb match and the wonder goal that followed that Hummers header which in itself was a marvel in its own right. BL title not decided yet is my guessingReply

Why were Leipzig trying hoofball the entire time ffs? They even tried a burnley tribute first thirty minutes. They never benefitted and lost possession each time. Could have kept the ball for few moments and build attacks, instead just kept hoofing upwards. And those misses by Werner were inexcusable.Reply

They still managed to create most of the decent chances so maybe it was a good tactical decisionReply

Congrats to Bayern for winning the Bundesliga. They won't drop points again. Liverpool has more chance of losing from hereReply

well gentlemen - let me introduce: a bayern münchen fan! not much knowledge about football, not up to date, not very funny but confused about all of the above, himself and his club - and to compensate - chooses to be arrogant.Reply

Not sure if this match is typical of the Bundesliga but I noticed that neither Bayern nor RB played the ball out from the back much. The goalies hoofed the ball up retro-style 90% of the time, with limitedsuccess.
Good result for Dortmund!Reply

Generally Bayern and many Buli teams do play out from the back. But I guess the reason why Bayern didn't try that too much is Leipzig's famed press. As for Leipzig, not only were Bayern pinning them back successfully, but the acres of space behind combined with the slowness of Boateng these days meant a quick well placed ball to their speedy young forwards would set them free.Reply
