victory at Leicester? What does any of it mean? At least when we stand on the edge of the abyss and gaze into the void, wondering if there might be any purpose to any of it, football usually offers the consolation of the league table. We can cling to that, in its tallying of points find a point. And yet now with the shadow of City’s Champions League ban, and a probable appeal against that, and the possibility of a Premier League points deduction, although nobody seems to know for what season it might apply, the certainties of the table seem somewhat less secure. If City’s ban is upheld without any delay for the appeal, fifth will be enough for Champions League qualification. Which is great news for Leicester, whose lead over Sheffield United in sixth is 10 points – even after a run of only three wins in 11 games. And it is not as though Chelsea in fourth, whose win on Saturday was just their fifth in 15 games, are breathing particularly aggressively down their neck. And if the ban is upheld, what really have City left to play for, other than the indisputable income that comes with second place? LEICESTER CITY 0-1 MANCHESTER CITY: PREMIER LEAGUE – AS IT HAPPENEDRead more
And that is where Uefa’s action and City’s response have left us, in a limbo in which everything is contingent and nobody quite knows what anything means. Even the defiance of City’s fans seemed a little uncertain, the chants supporting Sheikh Mansour and promising to see Uefa in court less vociferous than the boos with which the home crowd greeted every touch from their former darling Riyad Mahrez. Amid such uncertainty, what is to be done? Nothing perhaps, but to go on, to strive against the futility and try to win football matches. With Wilfred Ndidi ruled out because of recurrent pain in his knee – leading Brendan Rodgers this week to insist he had not rushed him back after surgery – and Hamza Choudhury suspended, Leicester were left without any holding midfielders. Rodgers’s response was to adopt a back three for only the second time in the league this season. The first brought a 3-0 win at Newcastle, but it is fair to say City offer a very different threat – which is to say, a threat. The presence of Christian Fuchs as a left-sided centre-back, though, offered some support for Ben Chilwell, who was left horribly exposed against Mahrez in the game at the Etihad, which City won far more comfortably than the 3-1 scoreline suggested. CHELSEA’S FRANK LAMPARD FURIOUS AFTER VAR ADMITS ERROR OVER LOCELSO STAMP
Read more
Jamie Vardy’s pace against a City side alarmingly vulnerable to the counterattack had been the main threat in that game and so it was again, the Premier League’s leading scorer hitting the post after eight minutes as he ran on to a Youri Tielemans though-ball. Worryingly for City the chance stemmed from Aymeric Laporte first squandering possession and then, having won it back, being caught onthe ball.
After two substitute appearances it was the defender’s first start since sustaining a knee injury at the end of August. His return should in time bring greater stability to a City rearguard that has been suspect at times this season, but that is a process that may taketime.
There had been a theory that he would not be risked here with the Champions League tie at Real Madrid on Wednesday, but that early shakiness suggested he needs the minutes to feel his way back into form before a game of that magnitude. City dominated possession and had the bulk of the chances but, other than an Ilkay Gündogan opportunity that he rather scuffed at Kasper Schmeichel, City’s threat was limited before half-time. Restricting City to long-range efforts – a deflected Benjamin Mendy strike, a snapshot from Kevin De Bruyne, a couple of free-kicks – particularly without either first-choice holding player suggested Rodgers’s tweak had worked. Or at least it had worked as far as anything can against City. Against them, even when they are not quite at their sharpest, the flow can seem relentless. There will always be chances. Schmeichel made one exceptional save low to his left to deny De Bruyne and then beat away Sergio Agüero’s 62nd-minute penalty, awarded by VAR after Dennis Praet had blocked Gündogan’s drive with a raised elbow. It was the fifth penalty City have missed of their last seven.MATCH STATS

I honestly don’t give a flying toss anymore who benefits or not from VAR, but the indisputable truth is that if the technology does have the ability to make the game a fairer contest then those charged with implementing it in the PL are utterly fucking useless beyond the ability of the English language to adequately describe. How they can manage to review two identical penalty claims in the same match and reach two different conclusions is truly beyond me. These clowns shouldn’t be left in charge of anything with a plug.Reply

> two identical penalty claims I'm sure you know that's not true. However both Leicester claims were probably 50/50, so City's being saved is probably a fair result - and I promise I was thinking that before the winner ;)Reply

I said this last year when Leicester were challenging for the leadership of the PL, that they rely on a few key players, Vardy, Barnes, Ndidi, and if Vardy lost form or Barnes or Ndidi got injured, they'd struggle and so they have of recent times. Rodgers has done a good job with them but their squad is not big enough and Vardy especially is not getting any younger.Reply

letting iheancho come back on the pitch was scandalous. you could tell by looking at him he wasn't right. there are meant to be protocols followed when a player suffers a head injury but for some reason i can't figure out they almost never are followed and no one really seems to care. oh well. maybe one day.Reply

Maybe there should be an independent medical expert at the ground to rule on such incidents. Then the team with the injured player could be allowed to bring on a free sub if the independent medical expert rules there is aconcussion.

Whatever the reaction of the club's owners and fans to the EUFA ban, something stung the players into action against a not too shabby Leicester. Man City were brilliant in this game and if they can keep this up against Real, it might well be Pep going through at the expense of ZZ. The only thing I can fault City on is their penalty taking, therefore it's a 9.5 out of 10 from me.Reply

I wanted the Vardy chance that hit the post to go in, it would have opened it up more. I would have also given the De Bruyne penalty but overall, City coped well in defence with what they had to do and Schmeichel was by far the more busy of the two keepers. To me, it was much more comfortable and impressive than the 0-1 suggests. I think it's a credit to City's players that they managed to block out all the legal stuff and concentrate on the playing.Reply

Twice this season Ederson has absolutely wiped out a Leicester player - with such excessive force they’ve had to be substituted - and nothing has been given. Happy to accept the rules are different for goalkeepers when somebody can show me where in the laws or guidance it says that the goalkeeper can wipe out their opponent with impunity.Reply

Surely the phrase “excessive force” and “endangering an opponent” still apply to a goalkeeper who can use more of his bodythat the rest?

Only in England you could say that was a fair challenge. That was a stone cold penalty, what a ridiculous decision by the ref and VAR.Reply

Of all the player's they will find most difficult to keep it will beJesus.
If Juventus come calling as rumours say then he should go. Always liked him as a player. He is deadly and seems to be in right place at right time. His goals to game ratio is also very good and he still young. He will do well at old lady and be nice for him to see his face in theshroud of Turin.
Be like holding a mirror up.Reply

You think he'll move from Man City because he likes older women? I'm sure there are lots of old women in Manchester, he doesn't need to go to Italy for one.Reply

Scott Murray in the MBM report "the reigning champs have served notice that they’ll not be giving up". WTF??? I think Bernardo already conceded that they mentally gave up the title about two months ago. But even without this - not even the most deluded City supporters believes this any more.Reply

So: If city had played by the financial rules, would they have players like Jesus to bring off the bench? I'm not sure that many fans actually care though, its hard to think of a chant that encapsulates FFP misdemeanours.Reply

This whole handball thing in this year alone seems to be repeating itself. Four incidents in the last seven games, some of which weren’t apparently even checked by VAR. Burnley (not checked by VAR from what I’ve read), Rudiger at Chelsea, Nakamba in the semi-final and today’s all within a space ofjust over a month.
Was it from point blank, in a natural position, no. Was he making his body “bigger”? The answer has to be yes.Reply

One handball law against Leicester, another for us. OBVIOUS handballs for us not given against Burnley and Aston Villa, a pretty good shouts against Chelsea and today comparatively much weaker calls given against us in the Liverpool and Man City games sinceChristmas.
Just not getting the rub of the green at the moment, Manchester City deserved to win today but the refereeing is fucking hopeless.Reply

Could you please stop referring to Manchester City as 'City' in a report of a match against Leicester City? Also, it's absolutely outrageous that you don't bother to mention the two blatant penalties we should have had.Shocking article.

The FFP investigation and decision is proving shambolic. Leicester, and a whole bunch of other teams for the rest of this season, are going to be playing a team that they know has been put together by cheating, and circumventing the FFP rules. The decision should have been announced in the close season, with some sort of agreement with CAS to fast track an appear, or better yet a negotiation between Man City and UEFA to agree a sanction ready to gofor August 2020.

The Leicester team was put together by circumnavigating the ffp rules as anyone who knows anything at all about the subject could tell you.Reply

I think it is worth pointing out that the PL FFP rules are different and haven’t made a decision yet. As a Leicester fan it does irk me, but I also know that we have benefitted from it and that if FFP existed in a stricter format, Man Utd would probably be unchallenged in a Bayern style situation.Reply
