Ryan Kent celebrates with Florian Kamberi after scoring for Rangers in their Europa League last-32 second leg against Sporting Braga. Photograph: Octavio Passos/Getty Images Steven Gerrard hopes Ryan Kent will get a Braga boost after his winner fired Rangers into the last 16 of the Europa League.
Kent has struggled to justify his £7m fee amid Rangers’ winter slump. But the former Liverpool winger has gone some way to repaying that sum after securing a £925,000 windfall for the club with the only goal at the Estadio Municipal. Rangers should have extended the 3-2 lead with which they travelled to Portugal during the first half but wasted three chances – with Ianis Hagi becoming their fourth player this season to miss a penalty. But Kent sealed Rangers’ place in the draw on Friday 16 minutes after the break to send the 5,000 fans who had journeyed from Scotland wild and now Gerrard hopes it will help the Englishman return to hisbest.
“Ryan is a player that we need that level of contribution from,” Gerrard said. “There have been a lot of opinions on Ryan of late on what type of form he is in. But he delivered a big moment for us and he could have had two. “He was disappointed with the big chance he had in the first half. But I am really happy with him and I don’t just judge him on numbers. I judge him on what he is doing for the team – in and out of possession. People don’t give him the credit he deserves in terms of the amount of running he does for us – but he came big for the team and scored the important goal. “Hopefully this will do his confidence the world of good because there will be times when people aren’t happy with him and it’s a little bit up and down. That is part of being a footballer at a top club. But some of the opinions I have been reading of late on Ryan are ludicrous. He’s a top player.” Gerrard dropped a surprise an hour before kick-off when it was announced George Edmundson would partner Connor Goldson at the heart of his defence, with the out-of-form Nikola Katic dropped to the bench after the St Johnstone horror showon Sunday.
THE FIVER: THE GUARDIAN'S TAKE ON THE WORLD OF FOOTBALLRead more
It was a major call, with the young Englishman untested against top-level opposition but he stood up to the task as he and Goldsonstood firm.
Gerrard said: “The partnership of the two centre-backswas faultless. George was thrown in at the deep end but there’s one way to get European experience. “At some point a manager has got to trust you to go in, whatever the challenge is. He stepped up and he fancied it and he delivered with the help of Connor, who played like a captain, like a leader. He is someone who has had some stick since the weekend, along with the rest of us, so to bounce back and post that type of performance was great. “We played against high-class opposition, a very dangerous opponent, who are in probably the best form they’ve been in for some time. The players have been outstanding to a man over both games. I’m really proud of them for getting the job done.” Rangers have missed six of their 10 spot-kicks this season but Gerrard never doubted his team could pull through against Ruben Amorim’s side. “Moments like those can play on your mind but the game panned out like we thought it would. We could have scored two more and the tie could have been done at half‑time had we been more clinical. I still had confidence then that moments would come. “I won’t be disrespectful to Braga. They have beaten Porto in a cup final, beaten Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Wolves. High-class opposition. A team that hadn’t been beaten under their new manager – and we have beaten them twice in a week.”MATCH STATS

I'm not sure I would. Last year's CL final was really flat, and I think that was in large part because it was essentially a domestic English game, just played abroad. I think a European final really loses its glamour if both teams are from the same country. I see where you're coming from, and as a Celtic fan, I do actually want Rangers to do well in this competition. But I think it would be more fun if either Celtic or Rangers were playing someone glamorous and foreign - someone they don't play several times each season. Evensomeone English.

If we're going to play a prem team I'll have man u thanks. Arsenal seem to have sorted themselves out to a point. Though Im still surprised wolves lost twice to braga- the amount of chances we created against them, you couldnt help but think anyone with real pace up topwould murder them

well done rangers. what a performance. we are a counter attacking team: we are built to hit quickly on the break. of course, that doesnt work in the spl when 11 teams put 10 men behind the ball (and we make awful, awful errors) but where would the fun be if we were perfect? great result. lets keep this going. and good luck to celtic tomorrownight.

I think that's been Gerrards weakness so far, his inability to change it against the rest in Scotland. We should be playing two up top against most home and away, 3-5-2 possibly.Reply

aye you're onto something there. We signed all these wingers in the summer - and he made a comment at that time which i cant remember exactly but was saying, we'll have different ways to break teams down. But the players in those positions haven't done enough and that I think has been our biggest weakness this year, especially againstteams that sit in

The Jekyll and Hyde nature of this Rangers team is highlighted again this week, to go from that game on Sunday in which they were so defensively poor to that this evening was incredible. This Rangers team has similarities to Klopps 1st season at Liverpool in which they know exactly how to set up against teams who open up and attack yet struggle to break down any team who sits in. I wonder if (all being well in the east end tomorrow night( UEFA will embrace the 'hot ball' method for the draw to stop Glasgow and Scotland as a whole coming to a standstill for a week.Reply

We've been like this since gerrard took over though, able to keep a really good shape and be confident on the ball against good sides in europe. Ive seen far better rangers teams bottle it in europe and not trust themselves and you cant accuse this team of that. As for the jekyll and hyde at home- aye, its frustrating the last few weeks and theres clearly a bottle factor plus a lack of a plan b against teams that sit in, but equally the opposition have been relentless- up til last weekend we'd more points after that amount of games than the last 3 times we won the league. so grudging credit where its due. anywayonwards and upwards

Why Scotland come to a standstill?? Believe it or not the majority of the country aren't interested in either one of the cheeks. The Scottish Press on the other hand would end up a dribbling mess whipping themselves up to a frenzy....Reply

tactics tonight: revert to packing the midfield and force Braga to play down the sides where they will be crowded out. Not entirely successful, but enough to get through. Good result, though home side unbelievably inept. Have they been to Dubai since last week? Nice chanting by the away support. They really are arseholes.Reply

Good chance of both old firm teams in the last 16. Would you fancy an old firm draw? It would insure 1 scottish team in the last 8 which would be great progress. Checked the odds again on paddy power Inter favourites at 5/1then comes...
Arsenal 6/1
Man. U 6/1
Wolves 15/2
Rangers and Celtic now both 40/1 - lower odds than RB Salzburg! Who would ever have thought that at this stage? I still fancy Eintracht Frankfurt to win it at 20/1Reply

Would be the only sure way to a Scottish quarter finalist, but not sure I'd fancy it to be honest. No point getting ahead of myself though, Celtic not through this round yet.Reply

Just eaten a massive slice of humble pie :) After the first leg I said Rangers didn't stand a chance to beat Braga at the quarry. Not only did they beat them, they did it in style. Can't believe my beloved Benfica lost at home to this lot a couple of weeks ago. Congrats Rangers fans. It's going to be a rowdy night tonight in Braga.Reply

I don't feel too optimistic. We've been experiencing a dip in form in the last 3 weeks, losing 3 of the last 4 matches. We sat comfortably at the top of the league, 7 points ahead of Porto but two defeats on the spin (against Porto and Braga) has reduced the deficit to one point. I'm fairly sure we'll score tomorrow but not sure we won't concede. But that's the natural pessimism of someone who supports a club who's lost 5 Champions League/European Cup and 3 UEFA Cup/EuropaLeague finals.

Impressed by Rangers today, as were the Hispanic commentators on my tv. Braga kept up their pressure but Rangers looked dangerous, and as the game progressed, more and more confident. Hagi hit that pk well, but credit to Magalhaes for the stop. I thought that the miss would knock back Rangers' confidence, but not a bit of it. Kent's goal was beautifully done. Hoping for a Celtic win in Glasgow tomorrow.Reply

Wow! That was a fun experience for my neutral pals and I, we were convinced Rangers could pull off a 0-1... a really wonderful result for good-looking, intelligent neutrals all over the world. We will certainly be celebrating tonight! Soccer truly is the greatest game inthe world!
Who would my fellow neutrals like to see in the next round? Does it even matter?? LOL ;)Reply

Rangers done well tonight and credit to the back four and the manager, got the tactics right and did that without our best player. Surprised Braga beat wolves twice based on how they played against us= thats not anywhere near as well as we have played and we missed some amount of chances over the two legs. Lets have as easy a draw as possible now and save the big guns for the quarters..... Having said that i wouldntmind Man U

Too many missed chances, but a good result for Scottish football all the same. Gerrad is great tactical wise, but there is still no cutting edge. Haji could change that perhaps, but too early, bad luck with a goodish, but not great penalty.Reply

Id say gerrard is good tactically but not great. See most rangers fans moan about lack of impact of subs/ plan b etc. He's done well tonightthough

Problem for a plan b is the squad is very limited. Although the comeback in the previous game was excellent. There ae not enough goals in the team and too few players capable of scoring semi regularly. If Morellos is not scoring or being an arse then who else. He also fails to deliver quality in terms of assists. See the 2 poor balls that would have given Kent a brace in the firstleg.
Defo has failed to be a super sub that I expected and is now injured. It will take abit of time for Gerrard to clear out those not up to it. Or dont have the bottle. Develop others. But so far in Europe it has been excellent.Reply

Happy days. Outstanding result. Did not see that one coming. Our European performances this season have been fantastic, knocking out some top notch teams. jack great tonight in particular but everyone put in a strong shift. Cracking goal from Kent and the assist fromHagi.
Gerrard got his tactics and line up spot on again too albeit Braga didn’t really change things up. Hoping boyces tonsils stay sore for a few more days...Reply
