Eddie Nketiah (left) celebrates scoring Arsenal’s second goal in the FA Cup win over Bournemouth. Photograph: James Marsh/BPI/Shutterstock If this is what Mikel Arteta’s vision for Arsenal looks like, then the future is in very safe hands. First-half goals from the youth team products Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah secured a first away victory for their manager since he succeeded Unai Emery and set up another trip to the south coast to play Portsmouth in the fifth round. Along with the impressive Joe Willock and Gabriel Martinelli, Arteta’s decision to field a starting lineup that featured four players aged 20 or under paid dividends here with an all-action display which left Eddie Howe’s side chasing shadows at times duringthe first half.
Despite a frenetic finish that saw the Bournemouthsubstitute Sam
Surridge pull one back, Arsenal held on for a deserved victory that clearly delighted Arteta. “We played a really young squad because I wanted to see the reaction,” he said. “I’m very pleased because I saw a lot of things that I really liked. They have courage to make big decisions and they were terrific. That’s the difference withthese kids.”
Arteta won this competition with Arsenal twice as a player in 2014 and 2015 and had stressed the importance of using it as a springboard for the future before this tie. Perhaps with that in mind, he handed 20-year-old Nketiah his first start since his return from a loan spell with Leeds alongside the teenager Martinelli and the record signing Nicolas Pépé in attack, while Matteo Guendouzi and Willock were recalled in midfield. The late comeback against Chelsea last week after David Luiz’s red card in the first half offered proof of Arsenal’s growing team spirit under their new manager and that was very much in evidence in the opening exchanges here.Football Weekly

Saka has been pressed into emergency cover at left-back in recent weeks but the way he took his opportunity in the fifth minute suggests he could make an unfamiliar position his own. A driving run from Willock created the chance, with Martinelli’s perfect touch allowing Saka to hammer the ball past Mark Travers at his near post. Bournemouth’s usual approach to the FA Cup since they reached the Premier League means they have reached the fifth round only once in the last five seasons, although on this occasion Howe fielded several of his first-choice side. Yet despite the confidence-boosting victory here over Brighton in midweek which lifted spirits as they battle against relegation, the hosts struggled to find a foothold against Arsenal’s energetic youngside.
Willock could have doubled their lead in the 20th minute had he directed his shot either side of Travers before the midfielder’s excellent pass found Saka in acres of space on the left flank to supply a perfect cross that was tapped home by Nketiah. In response, Harry Wilson saw his effort parried away by Emiliano Martínez and Daniel Gosling then somehow failed to hit the target with a free header five minutes before the break. Arsenal’s defence, featuring Sokratis Papastathopoulos and the error-prone Shkodran Mustafi seemed to be standing firm – a relief for Arteta after a move for the Flamengo defender Pablo Mari reportedly hit the skids over the £7.5m proposed fee earlier in the day. A small pocket of visiting supporters even started chanting Mustafi’s name just before the whistle blew for half-time.MATCH STATS

My independently-minded 9-year-old refused to follow family tradition and selected Arsenal to support a few years ago. He's steadfastly backed them despite the relative misery of those years, and copping no end of crap from schoolmates and, to be fair, his big brother. So, if only for his sake, I really do hope Arteta is driving a genuine resurgence for them. And, frankly, I've always found the strong Arsenal teams easy to admire, and it's a fai…Jump to comment

I actually feel for Mustafi there. He played well up to the injury. Well played Bournemouth, only took you 45 minutes to turn up! They need to ditch Solanke, I love a good non-scoring striker like Okazaki but for it to work, they need to offer a lot of running, positional awareness, and the ability to lead the press, but Solanke is at best abit of a lamppost.
Excellent game management from Arsenal though, finally starting to seesome sort of gam…

Well done Mikel and Arsenal - good to watch too. He has got them working their socks off and developing the technique required for his version of Pep-ball even with a young team. We'll miss you at City, Mikel, but you've got the clothes right, the style of football is coming but could you smile now and again? Good luck except for twice a season.Reply

Thta was a great team last time the gooners came down to Fratton And we gave that team teh reception it deserved when they hammered usTherry Heny:
"I wore the Portsmouth shirt for those very special fans. They were singing my name, asking me to give them a wave and all that kind ofthing.
"I've never experienced that in my life. This was an away game and I was from the other team. Support like that has a great deal to do with Portsmouth staying up. They really are tremendous. They were asking me to sign for Portsmouth. "Wearing their shirt in their ground was the only thing I could do to give something back to them. I hope that it meant something." This week speaking of his departure from the North London club Henry relived the ocassion saying: "Getting standing ovations from away fans was out of this world. It's so difficult to understand because in France they are just not like that. "I will never forget that night (at Fratton Park) because you know a lot of people were appreciating what you are doing. Who knows what will happen in the future, maybe one day I'll return in front of themamazing fans again"

I was there for that one. Missed the train back and went on the lash in a Portsmouth nightclub while my wife was left home alone with a 4 and a year old. Do I regret it? No. I wonder whether Fratton Park is still like that, because even then the fans were like from a bygone age. 15 years earlier it would have been typical of many sets of fans inmany towns.
In 91 I was at Roker.Sunderland needed to beat us to have a realistic chance to stay up.Our only challengers for the league were Liverpool and they lost earlier that day. It pissed down on to the open terrace (like it did at Pompey years later)and the atmosphere was bedlam. Finished 0-0 which meant Arsenal champions and Sunderland virtually relegated. Some of their fans were banging against the fence and making incomprehensible North Eastern noises. Most of us initially thought they wanted to attack us.I grabbed my keys and clenched them into my fist as an improvised knuckle duster. Then it dawned on us they were applauding and congratulating us.Tremendous! On the walk back to the station (Roker?) Old ladies were leaning out of their windows and shouting " Champions" in what we assumed to beGeordie.
I went to the Stadium of Light years later and it was nothing like that. In fact it was as shit as Emirates minus the tourists. Is it really possible that Pompey have somehow kept football supportalive? I hope so!

Oh yeah.. when Fratton rocks it really does rock still. I'm not sure what teh atmosphere will be for the cup match -promtion is a priority but midweek under lights is usually special If anything, the fans and atmosphere is more hard core than back in2004.
We have been through so much from dodgy owners etc ..we were on the brink and we saved out club by buying it as a Supporter Trust. The atmpspehre after that just ratchetted up a few notches When we got promotion from league 2 before we sold the club..the last couple of months of that season cant put it into words..up there with anything in 40 plus years. And the ground is stil lovely old school.. bit of fixing here and there but the crowd are stil close up and personal Ande Portsmouth is still a working class city -not to much tarting up.Trust me ..

Being happy about last nights result, and remembering Aubameyang is still to come back onsunday.
Burnley will be an interesting selection for Arteta. I struggle to see how Ozil can feature regularly in the team, even if he does look a bit more up for it, under Arteta. I'd like to see Ceballos given a start, he was changing games under Emery and presumably he has only improvedsince.

Ceballos was excellent for his first couple of games and then was rubbish. Ozil has been pretty good since Arteta game in - actually added a lot of energy, tracked back (and pulled off a couple of excellent slide tackles amazingly), and his creativie play has startedto bounce back

If only Guendouzi could play like that every week? I've not been his biggest fan of late with his 'headless chicken' performances but last night was his best game yet over 90 mins. Arteta tweeked it dropping Xhaka to a deeper role and MG actually showed his worth without falling over every 5 minutes and releasingthe ball quicker.
Tough call for Arteta to select this formation again and drop Torreira, all else i feel is needed now is for Willock to perform for a full 90 mins and sustain the level he can be for more than one halfReply

The biggest problem we have is that Emery seems to have completely ignored fitness work. This means we're dominating the first half of matches but dropping off badly in the second. It also means the players have had to undergo a major shock to their systems during one of the busiest parts of the season in order to get up to the required fitness levels, and they've been dropping like flies with soft tissue injuries as a result. I don't want to put the boot in too hard because he didn't come across as a bad person, but Emery really was shockingly poor at his job. I can sort of forgive him for failing to get his ideas across to the players - it's not his fault the board hired someone who couldn't form a coherent sentence in English - but he let the players get so out of shape that we're now seeing things like 20 year old Joe Willock going down with cramp before the end of 90 minutes. That's unforgivable and continues to have a major bearing on how we play even after he's gone.Reply

Strange based on how much stake he put in pressing and harrying in his first season. I think there has long been a suspicion that there is something wrong with our fitness and conditioning team. Willock is a 60 minute player; we seem to lose at least 2 players every season as well to long term injury as well.Reply

Arteta also said that while he was very happy with the first half, we dropped off in the second half and he didnt like that. When he said that in the interview, i was so pleased. Credit where its due because it was a good solid performance by a young team, but rather than heaping on the praise, we still need to improve and Arteta seems to know that.Reply

Arsenal fans groaned when linked with Mourinho and Arteta is proving why. No cheque was going to written for 200 mill so someone was needed who could show faith in the squad and get the team organised. Arteta has fit the bill and it’s allowing gooners to take a half glass full perspective on the season and a big part of that is the youngsters; Martinelli and Nelson are in the match day squad but this game was about Saka, Willock and Nketiah. Willock has those powerful long ball carries in him and an ability to get in the box, Saka has a wicked and unpredictable final product and Nketiah has goals in him. Unfortunately being able to produce players out of nothing will continue to be an imperative as we are now a stick to the budget team.Reply

Somewhat sadly, I suspect our future budget will partly depend on how much we can bring in by extorting vast fees from the Madrids and PSGs of this world for the likes of Martinelli.Reply

Well we shall see. TBH our problem is too much dead wood at the moment; Mustafi and Ozil are expensive training cones. Also does any other club have such an appalling long term injury record; it means we are almost always permanently short. In any case I actually have quite a bit of faith in our scouting department as they seem to have such a good record at spotting decent players post Wenger. As for the flogging off of players for money; there are lots of rumours but not much concrete. I think the club now have a policy of selling players if they won’t resign before the last year of their contract. I don’t think that makes us a selling club just a sensible one.Reply

Really enjoyed the game especially the first half performance. It was played with control and purpose. Its seems very evident that MA clearly communicates his ideas given the huge improvements in every single player. Let's hope all the injured player come back soon and with a few sexy additions in the 2 upcoming transfer windows -Arsenal should be challenging for the league again. Very happy Gooner!Reply

Gabriel Martinelli is a fantastic talent and Manchester United didn't get him despite him being on trial speaks volumes about the club. Arteta is a better choice than Ole for all-purpose. We did a mistake appointing Ole and getting his culture reboot phrase while Artetalearned under Pep.

I feel like it isn't a coincidence that our young lads and Martinelli all play at the same level. It looks like Martinelli was an important piece of this puzzle. It feels like a masterstroke. There was a lot to be happy about today. The young players grabbed their chance by the scruff of their neck. Emi Martinez was good when called on, he's been good! I had a feeling that I'd see an encouraging performance before long with this manager and team - that was today. Incisive and ruthless in attack, assertive and dominant in defense - they were everything I wanted to see today. I'm a happy fan, oh yes Iam.
Reminds me of a Wenger quote.. that football is an escape. It felt like that today. Despite everything wrong in the world today.. Arsenalare getting better.

> Emi Martinez was good when called on, he's been good! "He's been good" yes but last night he was poor. He wasn't really "callled on" as they didn't have a single significant shot on target as I recall and he made two giant errors (coming out on corners and missing the ball or punching it weakly) which nearly led to goals. His kicking was good but not a night to remember for the young keeperReply

Yes, they won't roll over and not turn up like Bournemouth. One loss in nine games tells me Southampton are one of the form teams. Spurs have had some very tight games with Southampton this season. They are a seriously well coached team with some very dangerous players. The tie with Spurs could go either way... and this frail and brittle Arsenal really don't wanna meet them 'later on'Reply

Emery was using them in ridiculous formations and killing their confidence. Saka visibly went backwards after breaking into the first team but looks reborn under Arteta. Willock has improved too, and Guendouzi now looks like he's - shock horror - being coached rather than just told to go out there and run around. Torreira looks better, Maitland-Niles looks better, Luiz looks better, Xhaka looks like a completely different player, Aubameyang looks reinvigorated. The only members of our squad who don't look markedly better are Lacazette, Pépé and Özil.Reply

Yes, Emery is to be creditted with giving young players a chance (in particular Maitland-Niles who was dreadful under Emery but was still picked). Just unfortunate that his coaching style, lack of communication and negative tactics meant the team didn't have achance.

Arteta's Arsenal will be dangerous if / when they can string 90mins of quality football together. There are encouraging signs though, don't get me wrong - especially the kids. Saka was excellent today. Martinelli is class. Guendouzi is hard as nails and never loses theball.

Guendouzi is hard as nails and never loses the ball? I'm not a massive fan of Guendouzi but last night he was excellent which may have been due to Xhaka playing a deeper role whilst also covering for Saka and having a very disciplined game. Torreira does this very well when playing alongside Xhaka who then plays further forward but Artetas tweak at last showed promise with Guendouzi and it'll be interesting to see if Arteta selects this formation in bigger games.Reply

Again, there are positive signs. This is definitely one of our strongest crop of young players coming through for quite some time, and it's good to see them playing with focus and determination, although we lost a bit of focus/concentration and control of the game in the last 20 minutes or so, which could have been dangerous against a more switched-on opponent. I was surprised to see Holding not get a start, as surely he needs the minutes to get fitness and sharpness back, but at least he did make it onto the pitch eventually. Good to see Bellerin get another full match under his belt as he makes his way back to full fitness. He'll be a key player for us, and one of the natural leaders in the squad (I could see him being made captain next season). Also a nice reward for Nketiah to get a goal having been recalled from his loan move. With Laca totally lacking in goal-scoring form, having someone else to potentially offer goal-threat would be very useful indeed. Overall a good performance, not much to complain about, and we progress in the Cup which is always nice. Onwards!Reply

I think it's very likely that we will lose at least one of Laca and Auba over the summer. From memory, they are both heading into the final years of their respective deals, and both are stalling on negotiating extensions (understandable, really). I don't think the club has the finances to push big pay increases for both, especially without European football, let alone Champions League, but selling one should allow the club to go really hard to keep the other. Personally, I agree that given an either/or situation, that I would sell Laca and keep Auba, simply because the latter is a proven 20+ goals a season striker, and they are extremely hard to come by in this day and age. While Laca offers more in terms of all-round contribution, the lack of goals for him this season, and his overall issues away from home since he came to the club, is a major concern if he were to become the only senior striker. I agree that having Martinelli makes losing one a lot more palatable, although I'm not convinced that Nketiah will cut it in the Premier League just yet (there's something a bit lacking about his game, I can't quite put my finger on it, but he generally has a good nose for goal). If we sold Auba, he would need big improvements in goal-scoring from but Laca and also Pepe (or at least one of the midfielders, but he would probably be the main one expected to contribute goals) to make up the difference.Reply

Top 4 isn't insurmountable. Chelsea 10 points ahead. Chelsea next 3 games - Leicester away, United home, Spurs home. Arsenal next 3 games - Burnley away, Newcastle home, Everton home. If we can cut the lead in half over this period, you never know. Wishful thinking of course.Reply

As a Spurs fan I really love your optimism. We're 'only' six points back - and I don't see Chelsea dropping points in all those games - or us significantly closing the gap. Despite Arsenal's pretty fortuitous draw with Chelsea (only two shots all game!) - this Chelsea squad really has enough quality to get over the line and claim fourth in the PL (and Frank should be out of a job if he doesn't deliver at leastthat).
I also think for both North London clubs it might not hurt to spend one season out of Europe, regroup over the summer with their new coaches and go again. It's worked for Chelsea in the past and Leicester this season not to have European distractions.Reply

> If this is what Mikel Arteta’s vision for Arsenal looks like then > the future is in very safe hands. First-half goals from youth team > products Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah secured a first away victory > for their manager since he succeeded Unai Emer Arteta may or may not turn out to have a vision, but this isnt evidence of it. Pure overreach to create a "narrative" when its really OK to just write a match report: ho, what, where, why, how. You know - old fashioned "news"? These players were first fielded under Wenger and Emery. And the history of Emery's cup lineups says that these two would have played. Hell Wenger until his last few years, used to play an entire team of academy products and first team rejects in these. It's not really"vision".
Give us a call when Arteta can match Wenger's cojones by giving a youth product their CL debut vs Barcelona (Iwobi) or a full league debut at Anfield (Maitland-Niles).Reply

The Chambers situation is so sad, he'd worked his arse off to get back into the squad and then the first team, he was showing real promise, now he's probably right back to square one. Carbon copy of what happened to Holding last season. We've really had no luck at all with our defenders recently, even Saliba has been somewhat blighted with injuries since we signed him. Assuming Chambers comes back and regains the form he showed this season, he'd be my first choice. After that it's really very hard to say. I've got high hopes for Saliba but that's all they are at the moment because we've got no idea how he'll adapt to English football and it's expecting a lot for a 20 year old to rock up and immediately be at the required level. Chambers will be missing until probably next Christmas anyway, so to be honest I suspect we'll start next season with Luiz and Sokratis as our first choice pair, exactly as we started this one! I'd like to see holding given more chances though, I think he's got a far higher ceiling than Sokratis but he needs to shake off the rust that's accumulated after such a long lay off. In an ideal world we finish next season with Chambers and Holding in the centre with Saliba at first switch and Luiz also on the bench in case we need a bit of late game shithousery or someone to put a bit more bite intoour midfield.
